We will be going to Orlando Sept 11-17 and purchased a 4-day Military salute park hopper ticket. Since we have one full extra day to spend outside of Disney World, we've been trying to brainstorm what would be the best way to spend our extra day. Thought about Universal Studios (we've never been), but wondering if it will be too similar to Disney World and maybe there would be a better way to explore all Orlando has to offer.

We are two 30-year olds, will have a rental car. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Universal and Islands of Adventure are AMAZING parks that are very different than WDW and would be an excellent day away from Disney.

I'd suggest a day relaxing by the pool, going to the movies and a nice dinner. With 4 days in the parks in Sept., you will enjoy the break.

If you are active duty you and a couple guests can attend Sea World or Busch gardens for a day for free with their tribute promo. They have a form that needs to be filled out ahead of time though but it would be a great option.

We were at Disney World last week and only went to the parks every other day. The "off" days we puttered around, doing things at our resort, swimming, and visiting some of the other resorts. My son took a drum class at the Animal Kingdom Lodge (we stayed there one night), participated in a scavenger hunt at the Wilderness Lodge (where we stayed for the rest of our time), a hulu dance class at the Polynesian resort, a campfire at Fort Wilderness and watched the band and the pianist at the Grand Floridian. You would want more adult oriented activities, of course, but you can find plenty of things to do in the area if relaxing with a book by the pool is not your idea of a vacation. We also shopped at the outlet mall one day and went out to off-site restaurants a couple of times.

I love to just resort hop and spend the rest of the day shopping at downtown Disney.

All of the deluxe resorts are so beautiful and just checking out all the shops, pools and the Savannah at AK.

I would visit Universal Studios and Island of Adventure (IOA). Staying on-site at Universal can be expensive but its worth taking a look. Early entry for Harry Potter and Express Pass are great benefits which can be used on your check-in day and check-out day if you stay only one night there; however, it probably won't be too crowded in September so it may not be worth the cost.

Another advantage though is its easy to get back to the room and change after riding the wet rides in Island of Adventure. I don't like riding the wet rides and touring the park all day in wet clothes. We wore our bathing suits in the morning and went back to the hotel (Royal Pacific) to change to dry clothes. The wet rides at IOA are really fun.
