If you have used this company or have ever gotten a quote, can you let me know a ball park if what they charged for what they hauled? We envision the equivalent of 2-3 bedrooms of furniture, boxes and electronics will be taken by them as we are moving to a smaller home back in Florida.

Logistics do not support us doing this as a DIY or calling various charities who may or may not be interested in items. I'm just curious of what to expect cost wise.If you know if an alternate company that offers the same type of service and is less expensive, I would love the referral.

TIA

I recently used 1-800-Haul-Out, which is a similar service. I had them come out to give me an estimate for clearing out my garage (mostly junk, old tools, decorations, etc.) I have to tell you that the pricing structure is based on volume (space on their truck), and weight. If you have a lot of furniture, then it could be quite expensive. You'll never know unless you call them for a no-obligation quote. I was very satisfied with their work and they even swept up afterwards.

Do you have time for a yard sale? It may earn you a little money. And then what is left you can call them. Sometimes kids going to college are looking for inexpensive furniture.

Moms power went out therefore her sump pump didn't work and basement had some water in it. We hauled out stuff and took it home to add to our trash or put it on the curb waiting for her trash day. It is amazing how much stuff "disappeared" off the curb. It's a cheap way of getting rid of stuff if you are able to do it.

Part of the issue is heavy items and lots of stuff. We are in a poor location for a yard sale. Timing will not work as we are relocating. As it is, have to prep the home for sale and spending 3 weeks sorting and tagging and picking and choosing how to get rid of things just isn't an option. We already did a but sort in the spring. But we literally have a couple of entire rooms of stuff that just need to go.

The last relocation I did DIY while pregnant and it rather stunk.

Hopefully prices aren't too awful. We can get some of it reimbursed if it isn't too expensive. (We have a misc cap that goes to any expense and then the rest of the allotted budget goes to movers.)

It might be just as easy/inexpensive to rent a dumpster, have them park it in the driveway, and fill it up then have it hauled away.

I understand your time crunch so you really don't have much time to phone different charities, but I will mention one--if you have a women's shelter or similar in the area. We have had them in even the smallest of towns and rural areas. We phoned the charity services side and told them we had items--furniture, clothing, toys...They sent people out to pick it ALL up. I expected just a portion. They were taking the items to set up homes for the families ready to get back on their feet.

Anything not needed, they would distribute to other charities.

Good luck on your move!

Thanks for the referral. They do not service my area.

I used 1-800-GOT-JUNK when I sold my parents house. They said they charge by how much space your items take on the truck. They took a standard sized refrigerator, washer and dryer and charged me $175.
I tried the yard sale route, I literally couldn't give them away let alone sell them, and all three worked perfectly. Even tried the used appliance store, they don't buy anything more than 2 years old. I had the same issue donating a car, all the charities here want cars with less than 100,000 miles, less than 10 years old, with a current smog certificate, ready to sell. If I had that, I wouldn't be donating it!

They are expensive, about $150 for a 4x4' space or so. If you have Waste Management near you, they have the the Bagster http://www.thebagster.com/ , that holds a LOT of junk and is less expensive. You set the bag up in your driveway, fill it up, they come and haul when you are done.

I know you are short on time, but please do not throw all the furniture out. Put an ad on Craiglist and put free.Leave the stuff on the curb and it will be gone very quickly. There are so many people in need. Box up everything you want to get rid of and leave it there. I know in our city the Kidney foundation will come and get anything in your driveway along with so many other organizations. The disabled vets also. I am sure you could have most of the stuff gone over the next week to 10 days. Esp with the holiday weekend. What ever does not go then get a dumpster and dump. It makes me so sad that all of this stuff that other can use is going to be in a landfill.

If this dollar cost helps, from my parents house, they removed two full size mattress sets, two upholstered recliners, misc junk boxes that covered one full size mattress, 1 19" portable television, and 1 32" flat screen television. They charged $327 which included a $25.00 (IIRC) surcharge per television. As others have said, they charge by the fraction of a truck that your junk takes up. It was about twice what I expected.

I called them one time to potentially haul away a few old pieces of furniture and it was shockingly expensive, i.e. more than three hundred dollars for a couch, a dresser and a table and chairs. I actually asked the guy if he was joking.

I echo the previous suggestion that it may well be less expensive to rent a dumpster if none of the other options (donating, craigslist, etc.) are feasible, unless money is no object.

I called a similar company after FIL died and was shocked by the high price they quoted. We ended up putting lots of stuff out by the curb a few days before bulk trash pick up day. About 90% of it was taken before then. And a lot of it literally was junk.

Some furniture in decent condition was donated to Habitat for Humanity. They even came to pick it up. Big Brothers/Big Sisters picked up clothing, small appliances and housewares, etc.

There's still the crawlspace to go through. Based on what we found in the attic, I shudder to think what's down there.

Honestly this is why I wanted to hire someone. I have no intention of throwing stuff in the garbage. Even if logistics do not support us going the donation route, a company that will keep what they can out of a landfill is much better than dumping stuff.

These companies salvage what they can, right?

ETA: many places here will not accept donated mattresses or electronics. We asked when we did a declutter in may. My husband had delivered some items to Habitat and Salvation Army.

1-800-Haul-Out does donations, and I'm sure the similar companies do also. They post the items on their facebook listing and tell people to come down and take what they want. I pulled this from the 1-800-Got-Junk website - It’s not just junk to us! We do our best to donate and recycle as much as we can. Since 1989, we’ve saved over 1.5 billion pounds of junk from the landfill, and counting.

When 1-800-Haul-Out came to clean out my garage, their estimate was for $160. I also had a groupon that I paid $19.00 for, that covered $100.00 worth of service. So, in the end, I paid $79.00 out of pocket. I would have gladly paid $300 to have it done and taken care of.

They looked great but are not in our area.

DH is rethinking this and is tracking down charities. We may still have to call junk people for a few pieces. But much cheaper than filling and paying a whole truck.

Thanks all for the recommendations!

CHeck with your town/county. My town has a recycling center and they take any electronics items (Tvs, toasters, computers, old cell phones, etc.) for free and they recycle them. You just have to bring the items to them.

And I have been told that these companies that take your stuff end up dumping a lot of it in the end.

As PP suggested, just set it by the curb. Someone will come grab it :)
