Suggestions Please!

For our trip (only DH & I) this May, we will be arriving at POR in the wee hours of a Saturday, my guesstimate is it will be somewhere around 1 am.

We are not renting a car this time out (DME). By that hour we will not have eaten for a minimum of 8 hours.
I am waaay too nervous to eat when flying & our local airport's restaurants will be closed, so won't be able to take food on the plane.
We've had pizzas delivered to the room before, which was nice, but are there other alternatives?
And if not, how late do pizza places deliver in Orlando?

Thanks in advance!

Jean & Christopher

I do not think you are going to find many food options at the resort at 1:00am. Probably the most you will find will be some vending machines near your room where you can purchase small snacks (candy bars, chips, etc.) for a small fortune. I do not think the food court or the gift shop/store will be open at that time of night. From what I have seen most of these close down at around 11:00pm to Midnight. As far as pizza delivery places, I would say you may also be out of luck getting someone to deliver there at 1:00 in the morning or later (by the time you have actually checked in and know what room you are staying in).

One thought might be to carry some dry food in your carry on. Maybe not a meal but something to tide you over until breakfast. I am talking granola bars, instant oatmeal (you could use some hot water from the resort to pour in to the bowls). Stuff that will stick in your gut a little bit.

Also, some of the larger airports do have resteraunts that stay open very late. Your best bets might be chains like McDonalds or Burger King.

I just wouldn't rely on a lot of options once you get to the resort if you did not bring anything or eat something at the airport.

I agree that you should pack something (more like several somethings) in your carry-on to tide you over until morning. Granola bars was a good idea, or you could do cereal bars, pop-tarts, crackers, bagels, muffins etc.. As long as it's not liquid, you can bring it on and that way you will have something to rely on.popcorn::

Yes, we figured on everything at the resort being closed tight and most of MCO ditto. I really can't do McD's or BK late at night but DH might.

Unfortunately, my quart baggie will be filled with makeup: eat or scare small children? :rotfl:
Heck, I even barge in on DH's quart baggie!

But I will take you up on putting some instant oatmeal in the carryons (we are a carry on only couple).

Does anyone know what time the DTD or PI eateries close? Or what time the buses/boats stop running there on a Friday night?

Grab all the peanuts you can on the flight, don't forget to ask your neighbors if they're going to eat theirs. Scoff 'em down when you land :rotfl2:

At 1am I'm betting you'll be more tired than hungry...I'd wait until morning to eat. Although men can be... hard to rationalize with ... when they're either tired or hungry and you're going to be dealing with both ... yikes. Yea, pack the food & keep your fingers ~far~ away from anything you hand him.

quick question, your tag says you're from NH ... why will your flight be over 8 hours?

I would also like to know?!?!? We are getting in at midnight and my husband is hoping to be able to go to the ESPN club on the Boardwalk when we arrive!!

Yep, DH is gonna be some cranky! :scared1:

Funny, I CAN drink in the plane! Maybe I'll get so loaded I won't remember I haven't eaten since noon!

I think ESPN is open until 2 pm, but I have no idea if the kitchen is still open.
Also, it depends upon what day of the week you're arrivng on & what time of year.

Stay tuned for my next thread!

PI is open until 2am, with Disney buses running an hour after that. You COULD get there and back that late if you wanted to.

That said - I'm not sure Raglan Road serves food that late, though they might do appetizers.

You might be able to call and see.

After traveling that far, and waiting on the ME and checking in, I would not want to jump on a bus and head out for food personally. I'd pack stuff in my bags instead or grab something in the airport to carry on the last leg, like a sandwich and chips.

I do not think any buses run from the resort to DTD or PI at 1:00am or later in the morning. I thought the last scheduled pickup from DTD or PI back to the resorts was somewhere around that time, possibly 2:00am or so when the bars close. But they definitely would not be making runs to that area from the resorts at that time.

As far as the ESPN club, I am not sure what time they close...I would bet the bar closes maybe at 2:00am but I would not count on getting to your resort and then getting to the boardwalk in time to get any food if you are not even arriving until midnight. They probably close the kitchen portion well before 2:00am and just leave the bar open until that time.

I agree with the consencus though. Just pack some dry snacks. Since you probably will not need a whole lot of things until the morning and you should have your regular luggage by then, maybe pack one carry on with the stuff you absolutely must have and then one carry on with dry food items. If you did it that way, you might even have room to pack some pre-packaged dry meals that you can find in the store that you can basically add hot water to...(I am thinking really basic stuff like Top Ramen noodles)...That and some snacks should be more than enough to get you to the morning.

have you thought about ordering groceries from garden grocer. if you have it delivered that day, the front desk will hold everything for you until you check in. they will keep anything refrigerated that you might order (milk, lunch meat, cheese) you can order stuff to have sandwiches, chips, salsa, soda. i ordered from them on my last trip and it was great to have some bagels and cereal in the am before going into the park. and you can grab a cold water/soda from the fridge every morning to take with you each day. anyway, you can have something like a picnic lunch in the room before going to what i am sure will be a much needed sleep. i know i would rather have my dh make some sandwiches while i take a hot shower instead of taking a bus to dtd.

We travel non stop from a small airport where the restaurants shut down relatively early, so other than vending machines no luck there.

I think it's instant Cream of Wheat or oatmeal for us!

I will give Raglan Road a cal, apps are fine with us, just something hot would be very appreciatedl!

I think I'll make the round of calls tomorrow & report back here
Umm, 2nd thought tomorrow is the High Holy Day (St Patrick's) so this may wait until Tuesday!

Great idea...

Now why didn't I think of that?

Actually we're only staying for a few nights & DH was hoping for a cheapo trip, which to him means no souvies & stick to the DDP :rolleyes1

If the transportstion isn't up or the kitchens aren't open I just may order soda, water & sandwich fixings, bread & fruits!

DiszyDean:
I forgot about Ramen Noodles! Okay, it's a feast of Ramen Noodles & freeze dried entree like Nutrisystem!

That might be the way to go if you are trying to do it on the cheap. Ramen noodles and Nutrisystem meals or something similar. It might be a little more expensive to have groceries delivered and there is probably a minimum order amount like $50 or $100 to have them delivered. Maybe not worth it for just a few nights. If you plan on using the DDP, I dont see how you could eat $50 worth of groceries on the side.

I would probably either pack some snacks or dry food, grab something from the airport before getting on Magical Express, or order from Garden Grocer. I never have ordered from GG, but I hear great things about it :)

Since you'll be in the Boardwalk area Picabu's--the old Tubbi's-- in the Dolphin should be open. They advertise as being open 24 hrs a day. I think after 1 am it is only pre-packaged stuff.

How about eating at Chile's at Orlando Int'l Airport? It's Friday night so I would assume open pretty late?

Isn't Picabu open all night at the Dolphin.. why do I think that and you could cab it over there and cab it back if you are starving... Just a thought if the buses have stopped by then..

Picabu:

"A curious gallery of evocative food and decor, Picabu was created to delight both kids and the young at heart. The always-open adventure eatery serves up an affordable and unique dining option for the entire family in a buffet/cafeteria setting. The centerpiece is Picabu, a delightful and adventurous wood-carved and brightly painted animated character who diners will find behind every corner leading the way through the unique and unforgettable dining experience. Picabu, designed by Kakadu Art & Design in Wood, Ltd. will fascinate kids (and parents) as they make their way through the restaurant’s selection of America’s favorite foods. Open 24 hours a day; seven days a week, Picabu is located in the Dolphin wing, and also offers a 24-hour sundries shop that includes toiletries, magazines, snacks and gifts."

Couple of other suggestions: if you're staying at a value or moderate resort, call (or post) to see if the microwaves are accessible even if the foodcourt is closed - if so, pack a couple of those Hormel 90-second (non-frozen) dinners.

The other thing that always works for me is Uncrustables.

I would throw some snacks in your bags.... that would be the eaisest in my eyes.... I dont think I would want to eat a big meal at 1:00 in the morning myself.... but a little snack of crackers, chips, etc...
