If you are just interested in an e-reader with MAYBE an interest in mobile computing, the iPad is quite an investment for a maybe vs the Kindle.

Now if you decide: 'Yes I want to browse the web and Yes I want something that deals with email well and yes I want it to be an ereader" then the iPad of course.

Edit: Just thought of this, think of the iPad as a GREAT multimedia experience with a decent laptop takeover.

As you can tell, I love both my Kindle and iPad so really can't sway you one way or another I can just pepper you with what I know on them

Well Camper ................ You missed one question .......... Inside or Balcony????????

Hhaha umm, they both rock!!! I mean one is the super light version? So realllyyyy small balcony for the Kindle? Maybe one that isn't a balcony but has a big glass window? iPad gets the royal suite balcony! Cost differentials are about the same lol1!!!

Sigh, your so NOT going to like me. Quarter 1 of 2011 Apple is due to release the iPad 2. Now, this could be pushed back and if it is not you will NOT be able to get one easily until Quarter 2 hits. It took a MINIMUM of 3 months for people to start easily getting an iPad when they first came out. Otherwise you are in the LONGGGGGG line day of release (kind of like Friday after Thanksgiving) or are on a waiting list. Just so you are informed.

That's ok. DH has a kindle I use right now so I'm going to ask for one or the other for Christmas.

Swoops, not sure if you are into this. But for people with home automation, those small square tablets that are used to control home theatre, temp, lighting, security, etc are over 1K and have really bad resolution as well as extremely limited functionality. Control4 home automation works on the iPad and works better than any other I have seen out there! Kind of funny to see in the market the iPad actually surpassing a device in cost efficiency like that. Very different case here, just a side note from a techie geek. I could go on and on currently very excited with Control4; have been working with it a lot lately.
