Why does DCL allow smoking?

you have not been forced to vacation w/my extended family :lmao:

Oh, dear....my only unpleasant cruise was with MY extended family....I'll be happy to switch with ya!

Some non-smokers feel strongly about smokers right to smoke... like me!

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 You and me both! They can smoke to their heart's content and when it bothers me...I'll get up and go to a non-smoking section. If smoking on cruise ships bothers me, I'll cruise Celebrity. I did, and laughed at DH whining that he couldn't smoke his cigars on the balcony. He got over it!

I have never met a "respectful" smoker when they are in need of a fix. I've had smoke blown in my face when I've asked someone, politely, if they would kindly smoke away from an entrance to a WDW resort. It was not a DSA. Smoking is an addiction! I'm sure there are nice folks that won't blow smoke at me....I'm also sure that if I'm around smokers I need my recuse inhaler. So...do I stay home and lock my doors or do I try and change policy so that myself and family are not exposed for even one moment to anyones addiction.

Not getting worked up, just trying to ensure my vacation, which includes an obstructed veranda (to avoid being subjected to an irritant to my lungs)is not ruined because I like fresh ocean air

"It is what it is" ...just the attitude I was talking about.

Sorry...I'm officially off my soapbox and will continue to fight for non-smokers rights!

I met some very polite smokers on the Wonder. I made the mistake of finding a lounge chair in the smoking section side up on top deck. I was all set up, magazines, ipod, drink, lotioned up, my teen daughter knew where I was to find me if she needed me. I was in heaven.

I didn't notice the ash tray connected to the railing or the sign. When a couple came to the railing to smoke. I couldn't smell anything. I was on my tummy with my ipod headphones and could tell someone was blocking my sun on my calves. :rotfl: I turned around and saw the ash tray. I swear, I asked that man to pull my lounger 1 foot away from the railing and he did! I was all comfy and set up..(I'm a lil pooh sized) I just picked my drink up and he moved me 1 foot (basically, giving them more room to stand together and me my sun) :thumbsup2 It was funny and we laughed. When they would come back they made sure they weren't in my sun. :thumbsup2 :flower3: They were very respectful right back.

However, I don't have allergies and completely understand both sides. But I WAS on their side.

Oh, not only are there E-cigs, there are now E-hookahs. :)

In my opinion I don't think it will ever be gone cause Disney is smart enough to know that people smoke and they need a place... These people who smoke is money n disneys pocket also they don't want there smokers to go elsewher

You and I apparently are reading it differently, because I'm taking away that it IS talking about indoors....and I found another quote where it specifically states that, but I'm not on my computer. I also understand it as saying what I said before, that it's especially harmful to people who are already compromised.
But, I realize that we are both firm in our beliefs, so I'm finished discussing it with you. No hard feelings.

This is actually correct. If you delve into the report deeper, like where they get their data. The numbers of 49,000 deaths each year due to 2nd hand smoke come from a study (1980-1988 IIRC) of non-smokers WHO LIVED WITH SMOKERS. They shared a house indoors over many many years.

Anti-smoking people then took that data and inferred all kinds of things about second hand smoke as if inhaling it once is proven to cause cancer.

And the surgeon general report used 90% rather than the generally accepted scientific standard of 95% to calculate statistical significance.

There was a great episode of the Penn and Teller show BS on second hand smoke.

According to the Center for Disease Control, "SHS causes lung cancer in people who have never smoked. Even brief exposure can damage cells in ways that set the cancer process in motion."

According to the US Sugeon General:

There is No Risk-Free Level of Exposure to Secondhand Smoke

The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that breathing even a little secondhand smoke poses a risk to your health.

There is nothing ambiguous about that statement. It doesn't need explanation or qualification with statistics. It is absolute. Indoors or outdoors, even a little secondhand smoke poses a risk to your health.

Thank you. :thumbsup2 Another poster continues to pick and choose which portions of the Surgeon General's report to quote, while leaving out the pertinent information as it applies to the OUTDOOR smoking that's allowed on DCL.

Doesn t celebrity allow smoking?
I hate having to walk through the smoking area and try to avoid it, but many people still smoke anywhere they want and ignore the rules

What it amounts to is it is read the way the person reading chooses when someone reads something that could be totally against them they will find te wording in it to make it sound like its for them... No against them... Sounds like they take the context out to read the way they want it o read

They will continue to allow smoking somewhere on ship because there is no way smokers could stop for 4 days. I don't think most of them could function so you are pretty telling them they can not cruise. The cigarette companies have added multiple chemicals to the tobacco to ensure people remain hooked and continue to smoke.

From Celebrity's website:

What is the onboard smoking policy?

For your comfort and enjoyment, our ships are designated as non-smoking; however, we recognize that some of our guests smoke. Therefore, cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas of the ship. Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, casino, theater, lounge, hallway, elevator, or corridor. This policy includes smoking-like products such as electronic cigarettes. Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom, nor on any stateroom veranda. If you are in violation of this policy, a cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to your SeaPass® account and you may be subject to further action pursuant to the "Consequences Section" of the Guest Conduct Policy. Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. You must be at least 18 years of age to purchase, possess or use tobacco onboard.
Additionally, there is a non-smoking policy on all components of the land tour portion of all Celebrity Cruises Cruisetour products. We appreciate your understanding and adherence.

Step Mom was diagnosed with COPD today. She knows, it's her fault, but it sucks...BIG TIME.

My 59 year young mother passed away in August from the torture of COPD. I has been at times almost unbearable. God Bless your family

I currently care for my 71 year old father with end stage COPD. He has had it for the last 10 years. It is a horrible existence in the end, 24/7 O2 , breathlessness at rest. I wouldn't wish this disease on my worst enemy.

DCL allows smoking in other areas of the ship so smokers can get their fix. Like Celebrity I wish DCL would follow suit and not allow it on verandas. As far as DCL losing money if it was banned from verandas....WDW doesn't lose money at the Hotels and they ban smoking in rooms and balconies. They have other places to smoke.

COPD is an awful disease. I see so many people here in FL in wheelchairs and forced to use O2 because of it. (((HUGS))) to those who have lost loved ones or have one suffering from it.

I personally wish there would be a bigger push for people who smoke to use the e-cigs. I have a feeling that a lot of the advocacy against them and to treat them just like cigarettes comes from the cigarette industry.

I have no objection to people getting a fix of nicotine. Please, help yourself, I like caffeine. e-cigs allow them to get their legal fix without harming others. I shared a cabana with someone in May on CC and they were vaping (using an e-cig) and every once in a while I would smell a slight vanilla scent (from the 'flavoring' of the nicotine) but no reaction to it. And I am VERY sensitive to smoke.

If they would treat vaping differently, maybe more people would start doing it as it increases their freedom.

I completely agree! My husband is a smoker despite several times of trying to quit. A few months ago he switched to an e-cig and its been so much better. Before he switched he would never smoke around us, but we could still smell the smoke on him. Now he feels (and smells) better and I'm not always telling him about how awful smoking is. Plus it's much cheaper. It's a win win situation.
