Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant/Dining Help Thread

Teresa, I was thrilled to see that you can check off "vegan" when reserving your cruise... too bad it doesn't carry through to the restaurants.

Cheryl and Teresa, on the Dream, does Tow Mater's grill have veggie burgers? I had no trouble getting a veggie burger on the Wonder but don't see them listed at all on Mater's menu.

We didn't see vegan burgers at Tow Maters but I have to admit we didn't ask, either. They did have vegan burgers and grilled tofu available at Castaway Cay so it wouldn't surprise me if they had some stashed in the back of the kitchen!

Teresa

I just discovered that Emily from DTD Babycakes is posting a vegan tip once a month on allears. I wish it was more often! Only three more "tips" before I go!

Is anyone interested in getting a veggie meal photo thread going? I've seen a few pics here and there, but it would be great to have a bunch in one place, since there have been lots of veggie inquiries on the boards lately. I personally don't have any pics yet, but I have 10 ADRs coming up in May, and I'll promise to photograph everything ;)
Maybe we can start it off with that amazing looking dish a few posts back, from California Grill...
KJay, I think this is a fabulous idea. Any idea how we can start it? Do we need any kind of permission from the moderators? Or should we just start the thread? I, for one, would like some plant-based food porn. :cutie:

I think it might be best to just post the photos here in this thread. Quite frankly, this thread sometimes goes dormant for days at a time, so if anything, having the photos in this thread will help keep it active, so it doesn't drift away.

Here's the vegan Seared Marinated Tofu - With mango glaze, fresh vegetables and white rice, from Sci-Fi Dine In, It was really good and also gave me another idea with what to do with that bag of broccoli slaw I buy every so often.

Still at DHS, here's the vegetarian (and famed) Carrot Cake Cookie from the Writer's Stop. It's really more like two muffin tops stuck together. It's kind of big and filling... shared this with my son. One of these days I'm going to make a vegan version using IsaChandra's raisin-carrot muffins as a base. (Those muffins are awesome, btw. Recipe is in Vegan with a Vengeance)

Moving over to Kouzzina at the Boardwalk, I pieced together a meal from apps and sides, all of which were vegan. The soup I had was a tomato with chickpeas, but it's apparently no longer on the menu so I won't post the pic. The sides I had were the Herbed Orzo with Greek Olive Oil (which is normally served with cheese) and the Sautéed Farmhouse Greens with Toasted Garlic which honestly were AWESOME. I still dream about them. I'm not sure of the method they used but the greens were lemony and delish. I wrote asking for the recipe to no avail.

Even though I only ate sides there, I would return in a heartbeat. And my son really enjoys eating there so it's on our list every trip.

Last but not least, here are the vegan waffles made for me by the chef at Whispering Canyon Cafe. They were gluten free so I wasn't a huge fan, but I was thrilled to be able to get something other than a fruit plate "on the fly." I was invited by friends and therefore the ADR wasn't noted with my dietary request.

Well, those are the pics of what this aspiring-but-not-perfect vegan ate last summer. Looking forward to seeing pics from others!

Sounds good to keep photos all together in one thread...but I was just looking way back to the start of this thread, and it was originally just vegan. Is this the best spot for vegetarian pics/chatter (not just vegan)? I'm not sure how board ettiquette works here, but I wonder if it's ok w/ the original starters of the thread to have it changed over to something else- not just vegan, but other vegetarian pics/chatter as well...

The seared tofu dish at SciFi was really good- I'm glad someone got a picture of that one!

I'm still searching for some confirmation on that delicious meal someone posted the other day- she said it was from California Grill, but the only menu I could find anywhere with a similar dish listed was Artist Point. Can anyone confirm what restaurant serves this yummy creation:

I'm not a vegetarian, but this last week at California Grill I had an amazing vegetarian entree: Sautéed Sweet Potato Dumplings with Chanterelles, Planet Carrots, Brussels sprouts, and Pumpkin Seed Vinaigrette

It was soooooo good! The picture isn't so great because I was so into eating it I forgot to take a picture until it was over half gone.

Question!

Due to the location of both of these restaurants (not necessarily the fabulous selection of food, LOL), I have interest in Coral Reef and San Angel.

But I probably can only do one of them.

The CR menu seems to have some mushroom phyllo dish, and I hear San Angel has a tiny vegetarian menu, but can also make their other dishes veggie.

We're ovo-lacto, not vegan, FWIW.

Does anyone have an experience at either of these places? Any advice? Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Teresa Pitman I feel so bad that you had such negative on-ship experiences with the food. :( I'm not vegan and we did RCCL, but we found that the servers were really hit and miss as to how good they were and what they knew. Our assistant waiter was awesome. Our main waiter was awful. The others assigned to our table were omnivores and big "spenders", ordering lobster and all sorts of other dishes and wine....it's funny how the food is included, but if you order "expensive" items you can be treated better...the waiter DEFINITELY had the expectation that the other couple was going to tip better. And, in fact, I bet they did, but it was because that other couple got all the attention and WE got almost none! We tipped the assistant waiter above and beyond his usual, but gave only the minimum to the main guy.

Anyway, I feel bad that you didn't even have someone like the assistant to help you out on your cruise. :(

I've been to CR before and was pleased with my meal. It was a few years ago and the current menu sounds even better than what was offered when I went. If I had the opportunity we would be going again this year for dinner, but it just wasn't in the cards for this trip. But I wouldn't hesitate to go back. I'm also an ovo-lacto vegetarian.

We are vegans and had a delicious meal at Coral Reef. It was a pasta dish with veggies and cannellini beans. The chef and waiter were very nice and went out of their way to accommodate us. We have been vegeterians before when eating there several years back. They offered us the vegetarian item on the menu, but also said that the chef could make us something else if we didn't want that. We love Coral Reef. It is fun eating by the tank. I say give CR a try.

Sorry if any of the following pictures have been posted already- I didn't go back and read all 22 pages before this. I apologize in advance that some are half eaten already when the picture was taken :lmao:, sometimes the food is just too good to remember to take a picture before diving in!

This is the vegetarian option at Whispering Canyon Cafe. The chicken vegetable penne pasta, without the chicken.

Here is one of the selections from the vegetarian menu at La Hacienda. It was the empanados de queso. Pretty tasty.

Here is the Four Cheese Faltbread at Mama Melrose. Well.. half of it. Didn't wow me, but it was good nonetheless.

Here is my favorite counter service meal at WDW, the lighthouse sandwich at Columbia Harbour House. I dream about this sandwich.

Here is what the chef made especially for me at 'Ohana. Completely different from what they made me last times, both were excellent.

I could easily just fill up on this, though, at 'Ohana. Love their lo mein noodles. Considering this meal is so much centered on their meat skewers, I find this to be one of my favorite restaurants and will keep returning.

Ohhhhh that looks so much better than I expected.... I think I might dream about it without even having it yet!

And now you have me wanting to change my breakfast to dinner there. Oh now wait, I didn't make any ADRs there, went with Chef Mickey instead. Hmm.

Thanks to both of you!

It's going the opposite way I had wanted, LOL... While on the 3 Caballeros ride I got major "I want to be sitting there" envy, similar to when you're at Disneyland on POTC and you float past the Blue Bayou (which is weird, since I couldn't *see* in Blue Bayou and the food wasn't that great). DH hasn't been on that ride and doesn't know where the restaurant is, and wants to keep it at CR! :)

So there are two marks on DH's side so far. :goodvibes

We love love LOVE 'Ohana. And while the food at Chef Mickey's was completely mediocre and buffets are not our favorite, it was one of my favorite meals because DD was in complete awe of meeting her favorite characters during dinner.

I tried this once and it got merged into the regular photo thread. It's sort of frustrating because it's too hard to go through a million pictures to find the vegan/veggie options.
