The Magic Of Happiness Is Here! A Tokyo TR Update 8/19

Totoro, Ponyo....Buddha

Todays wake up call was 8, we had to take an hour train ride to our first destination so the sooner we got up and moving the better. I surprised Alish with some pop tarts because they are not a thing in Japan. Also Pan Jewels is closed on tuesdays so pop tarts for breakfast was our only option.
Today Marisa made sure to pack the selfie stick, but then she spent all morning taking selfies because Alicia had “great lighting”

With all the Hamilton sing a longs in the morning…pretty much everyday. Alicia wanted to know what songs are popular back in the states and goes “Uptown funk” She is a little late on the times. Then for some reason we got on the topic of how Marisa basically lived with us over the summers growing up. And how when I had to go somewhere she would just stay at my house and play legos with my brother.
We left the apartment a little before 10 and started making the walk to the station. We got almost half way there when Alicia goes “Do I have my suica?!”
Turns out she didn’t so we had to head back. Marisa and I went to the 711, which isn’t a gas station just a convenient store, and went in search of the sakura latte. By the time we got to Japan their starbucks switched from the cherry blossom drink to a soy apricot drink.

26435374175_4339603084_z.jpg

We met Alicia at the bus stop and congratulated us for being the basic white girls in Japan. I didn’t care for this rude comment because the drink was delicious!

25832556083_f7dfaef980_z.jpg

We didn’t want to waste anymore time so we waited for the bus (which also takes the suica) to take us down the road to the train station.

26409440976_792f52e54b_z.jpg

When we got to the station we got some snacks for our travels and hopped on the train to Tokyo station.

26409438986_509887a546_z.jpg

We walked the tokyo station for which seemed like forever to make our next train to Kamakura. The train ride was a nice hour ride. The start of how long can we annoy Alish with songs from Hamilton started. She started to really not like it (but surprise Alicia is back home and is obsessed with the soundtrack)
After our nice train ride through Japan we made a pit stop and we ran into one of the things I was not looking forward too. First off toilets in Japan are super nice, however there are some stalls that will have what I like to call a whole in the ground. Its basically a urinal on the ground that you stand over. Welcome to kamakura but I will wait longer for a westernized toilet.
We punched in the buddha address into google maps and started walking. We ended up walking down a street full of restaurants and little stores. Thats when we found totoro.

26435373605_4990c4802a_z.jpg

We first checked out the upstairs store and then the little downstairs store.

26369191641_6bb5a21ba5_z.jpg

Besides totoro the only other anime I know of is Spirited Away because Danielle use to watch it all the time growing up and Ponyo thanks to Disney.

26162528560_cb5c9ce3f7_z.jpg

We headed down the street and lost Marisa in a store for a good 15-20 minutes. It was a surprise and we weren't surprised when she picked up even more cups and saucers to bring home.

25832551343_7cf7ba1274_z.jpg

Google maps took us the wrong way so we had to head back to the station.
We went under the train line and headed down a road for a good 15 minutes. Then we walked down a cute little road which was one of the cutest little neighborhood.

26435370235_29d8fbe94e_z.jpg

We finally saw the buddha from afar, Marisa got excited that she led us into a parking lot. The guard was kind enough to give us directions to get to the entrance. Of course right outside the entrance were more little shops that we lost Marisa in again. By the last shop Alicia and I waited outside to see how long Marisa would browse once she realized we weren’t that. It was still awhile but we finally went to the buddha.

26467408856_5ba68bd91d_z.jpg

We pulled out the selfie stick and who would have thought we all would have loved such a stupid invention

26427212101_65892b7df0_z.jpg

The entrance fee is 200 yen. Once you get your information card about the Buddha you are ready to go.

I just found your TR and read all the updates! It's so fascinating to read about your visit to Japan and all the fun things there! So happy just to see you and Alicia reunited! Can't wait for more!

I loved going through your thread! We were just in Japan for 8 days at the end of March. We were there for my younger DD's high school symphonic winds I band. They were invited to perform at the Hamamatsu Festival, so we spent 4 nights in Hamamatsu and 4 nights in Tokyo. Since we traveled with the band, we were limited to their itinerary. As a side note, the Japan high school bands were incredible! What an honor for my DD's school's band to be asked to perform in such a prestigious festival!

I see we visited the same places you did, and had some of the same foods you did too (ie. sakura ice cream!). The best part of the trip (well, except for the concert performance, of course), was spending a day at Tokyo Disneyland! It was super duper crowded on the day we were there. We didn't get to go to Tokyo Disney Sea. We hope to go back to Japan on our own one day, and be able to do much more, including more days at Tokyo Disney!

That is awesome and what a cool experience.
That sakura ice cream was the best! Yeah I've heard tokyo disney is always busy, but the crowds it draws is just crazy. I hope one day you will get to experience Disney sea because it was amazing!!!!

McDonalds Is So Japanese

Then it was time to pull out the selfie stick for more pictures. Sorry not sorry

Don’t mind Alicia’s lack of selfie stick knowledge to get the buddha in the pic

25939525883_dc534d5de1_z.jpg

behind the buddha was a little gift shop that we browsed, Marisa of course picked up more goodies to bring back home. Then we just hung out and played with the selfie stick while Marisa showed off her yoga skills.

26269868580_d296efcdd0_z.jpg

Alicia was too busy trying to pretend to be the paparazzi hiding in the trees, clearly I’m unimpressed

25937749744_77aa834abe_z.jpg

We left shortly after, when we were leaving the ceremony started and everyone flocked around the roped off area to see what was going on.

We were hungry and still had to make that 20 minute walk back to the station.

26542750205_2edb66ecda_z.jpg

The only thing near the train station was a mcdonalds, its not what we really planned for lunch but we were getting hangry. The weird thing about this mcdonalds is that you order on the first floor and there was a seating area on the third floor.

25937749584_aaebb05e6c_z.jpg

After such an “American” meal and deep heart to heart conversations we headed back to the station to head to Harajuku for the night.
The first thing we did once arriving to Harajuku was go to a store that Alicia wanted to go to to get a jean jacket for tomorrow. Then we headed over to check out the monster cafe. It didn’t open until 6 for dinner so we had about a half hour to walk around until we had to head back.

26021543653_e2e70b3694_z.jpg

One thing we noticed was that Japan was telling everyone lies. Harajuku has a huge clock along with other little clocks giving the times around the world. New Yorks clock said it was 3 but it was actually 4, thanks to that spring forward. Its ok Japan I will forgive you

26021541683_4d2bec5d95_z.jpg

We started walking down the street full of shops and realized we shouldn’t head down too far since we had to head back soon. So we went into our first store, which was hard to walk through since it was so small and everything was so close. My favorite thing was to find all the humorous english sayings they put on their clothing. I didn’t take pictures of any of them but we did find this lovely shirt

26021544723_eca8b0ae9e_z.jpg

We ended up heading back to the monster cafe and found a bench to sit on near the elevators. We sat there for a good 20 minutes, by this time Alicia hated the Schuyler sister song from Hamilton and decided we should head up. Turns out by the time we got to the 4th floor there was another entrance and the line to get it was making its way down the staircase.
The restaurant opened in about 10 minutes and we could only hope that we didn’t get stuck waiting forever to get in. As we waited on the stairs I felt like I was on a boat, my sea legs were ready to give out on me and I was going to tumble down the stairs. For some reason this was a recurring theme throughout our stair. At random moments we felt like we were rocking on a ship.
We didn’t wait very long once the restaurant opened before we were entering the stomach of the kawaii monster.

26531927242_8b0a681a88_z.jpg

While researching this trip I watched a lot of youtube channels one of them being Sharla in Japan, she came here and it looked like a cool kawaii place to go. So I had really high hopes for this place. Before you enter you have to pay a cover charge (this is common for Japan) here we had to pay 500 yen just to get in, however if you plan on going more you can get a members card that allows you free enter after your first visit.
Another thing is that they take groups in separately, this is because your waitress will open the big red doors and tell you the story of you basically entering in the monsters stomach.

More great pics! Thanks for sharing!

My DD ate at McDonald's with her chaperone group, but DH and I did not. I wanted to try that Sakura Fizz (?). Looks like you had one. What did it taste like?

Wait you have to pay a cover to get into a restaurant and then pay for your meal? That's a strange custom. I really enjoyed all the selfie stick pictures and I can totally see me eating at McDonald's in Japan. Not being a fan of sushi I'd be looking for all the American options. Great update!

I tried it, it was good. It was basically sprite with sakura syrup at the bottom.

Yeah it was $5 to get in plus the price of the meal. However in Japan you don't tip.

Dream Job, Wait What?!

The Kawaii Monster Cafe:
When you first walk in you're entering what seems too be like a rave in wonderland, they’ve got the music bumping and lights flashing.
The main thing is their merry go round that normally they do a show on, however when we were here it seemed like only one girl was working.

We were taking to our booth and given a menu, this was the start of this restaurant not being my favorite. When reading about it they said how menus are on an iPad and you can see what you're ordering. I wasn’t mad that we got a regular paper menu, it was just that it seemed like the selection was very limited compared to what they had online. Plus seeing a 9000yen meal made me want to vomit.
We all decided on what we were going to get and then we had a push a button for someone to come and take our order. The service was then really kind of poor, it seemed to take forever to get our food. So while we waited we walked around.

26626415935_aaf20c5536_z.jpg

The only downfall to mine was the egg on top, egg is super big and comes on most things, it was a struggle to move it without breaking the yolk, which ended up as a fail and a big mess on the side. Other than that I enjoyed my multicolor pasta.

Waiting for the check was the worst, we wasted a good 20 minutes for someone to come over. At first we were going to order their cake to split for dessert but when we pressed the button the first time and no one came over we decided if we wanted to leave the restaurant tonight we should just get the check. After about 5 times pressing the button someone finally came over. One thing about Japan is you don’t tip the waiter at any restaurant, so maybe that’s why at some places you pay a cover charge. I don’t really know.
Overall I’m glad we experienced the Kawaii Monster Cafe, I personally don’t think I would come here again if I went back to Japan. Plus there are also a lot of different themed cafes around Japan.
After our not planned long meal we exited the cafe, which is different from the entrance.

Right after the monster cafe we headed to Starbucks. Why? Just because from the street it looked like it was going to be the classiest starbucks I would ever step foot in. Alicia was a wimp by this point and needed to put her “duffy” tights on under her jeans to stay warm. Marisa ordered the special latte for the season, apricot honey soy latte, then said she wasn’t a fan because she doesn’t like apricot. Why she bought I have no clue.
This starbucks was on the 6th or 7th floor and over looked the city. I mean thats ok, but the outside patio seating for this place is what made it great.

As we hung out in starbucks garden we starting talking about how perfect it would be for a wedding, in the city but a hide away over looking the city. Then my brain wasn’t with me and a blurted out “dream job, wait what?!” like why I was saying the most random things beats me. But Alicia never lets me live it down.
I had to get home to put my over tired mind to rest. And the only way to get to the station was to walk down Takeshita street, aka the shopping road of Harajuku.

I am Japanese American, but I am not a big fan of sushi either! However, I LOVE Japanese food, especially ramen (which I could eat every day..."real" ramen, not packaged or cup noodle)! I love katsu, gyoza, and tempura too!

The Kawaii Monster Cafe looks like a cool experience, but based on your review, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to include it on our next trip to Japan.

RAMEN THOUGH!!!! I love it!
Yeah, I really wish it lived up to its hype.

It Must Be 8PM

Once arriving at Takeshita, it was basically empty

26555108572_dd83eb79a7_z.jpg

Note: most things close at 8, so it is very easy to tell when 8pm hits.
This being said we had about 10 minutes until it was 8. We basically missed out browsing the shops, which I guess wasn’t so horrible because it saved me money in the long wrong.
We were able to go into about 2 shops before everything closed for the night. Then at the end of the road was the train station. So that worked out great.
Getting back to Alish’s was quite the travel, but we made it.
After being outside in the crisp night air the best moment of the night was jumping into my stitch onesie. It is by far the best thing I bought from this trip.

I got everything ready for the morning because it was the day I was waiting for in over a year, THE DAY I GO TO DISNEY SEA!!!! Marisa was excited but not jumping out of her skin like me, she also wasn’t a fan of our early wake up call in the morning. So while I was talking about the game plan for tomorrow Marisa decided to unwrapped all her breakables she purchased that day.

26571998292_be8b35f1a2_z.jpg

Although we had 3 days of Disney ahead of us I was still kind of bummed that we didn’t make it to a cat cafe. So Alish made some tea and let me use her cat cafe mug that she got from her visit. Just another reason to go back to Japan.

26571997692_3a52805ce7_z.jpg

Like any night leading up to a Disney day no sleep was had. We stayed up talking and laughing way longer than we should have and ended up calling it a night around 1am.

The Best Park In All The Land

TODAYS THE DAY!!!! BEST DAY EVER!!!!!
Although the whole 6:15am alarm situation was not my cup of tea, it would all be worth it. The parks open at 8 and if you don’t get there right when it opens good luck trying to get fast passes. With that being said we were at the bus stop at 6:55 to take the bus to the train station. Where the train was waiting for us right when we got to the platform. We took the not even 5 minute ride to the Disney station and saw the Disney monorail from the train.

26061967884_32b6fdfd16_z.jpg

Once getting down from the crowded station we had to decided either to walk the 15 minutes to Disney Sea or take the monorail. The monorail costs money to take so we decided to follow the herd of people running to Disney sea.
The 15 minute walk to the park definitely helped with waking us up. However the entrance to the park was anything but extravagant.

26641021456_e7cc0c86e8_z.jpg

When we got to the park entrance it was already jam packed. This however is normal for Tokyo disney. To me it was like christmas crowds in WDW and I was ready to accept the challenge of getting as much done as I could.

26063582323_828ea82c8c_z.jpg

I was sad that I didn’t have a real ticket because we bought our tickets online and you print them out at home. But it was better to be allowed in the park and not wait the day of to buy tickets and have them sold out just to have a hard ticket.

26641020556_2ce219fe97_z.jpg

We still had about 20 minutes before the park opened and those were the longest 20 minutes of my life.

26574566962_e14b3a499a_z.jpg

We made it through bag check, passed the ticket booths, and packed in like sardines at the turnstiles. This is when a few things happened

1. We realized no kids go to school, most of the guests seemed to be group of kids and teens
2. we started a new thing called Larry-ing. This is when someone basically cuts the line in search of their party. Larry where are you?!
3. They go all out outfit wise for a day in the parks.

Mickey and the band came out and the park was officially opened for the day!
The one thing I did not like about it was you either make the dash into the park to get a fastpass or you take in the moment walking into the park for the first time. I went with getting the fastpass.
What is DisneySea like?
Its like Animal Kingdom - Big park, few attractions, all spread out
Epcot world showcase - but instead of countries its ports around the world
But overall its unlike any Disney park ever made and I can’t put into words how much I fell in love with this park.
We wasted 1 minute to take a quick selfie in front of the world before joining the crowd in the mad dash.

26063581673_a81faf02a0_z.jpg

26063578503_25c54ea36e_z.jpg

There are barrier after barrier of CMs lined up to try to slow the crowds down holding signs to tell them to walk not run.

26063575853_9a7794eb52_z.jpg

26641017846_47b7b2e5cf_z.jpg

Most people flocked to Toy Story Mania, if you thought the mania run in florida was bad thats nothing compared to Japans. The line they wait in just to get a fp was beyond crazy and since it’s the same as in the states we decided to pass. Instead we made a dash for a Tower of terror fp.

26641017536_89de47c1f3_z.jpg

26641015916_debe751fa9_z.jpg

Alicia took our passes and ran to get in the line for fastpasses, which was also already creating a really nice long line. This was truly the first moment I had to take in that I was finally here.

26641014976_7a36856c90_z.jpg

While we waited for Alicia to get our fps Shellie May walked by us, in which Marisa said “Look Sam Duffy” poor child doesn’t know her characters.
After finding Alicia we took a fast pace walk to Journey to the center of the earth.
Since the attractions are so spread out in this park it gave me the chance to see some of the park. The strange thing was how I had no clue where I was going. Everything was new too me. And I was so grateful to have Alicia here with us this day because she knew where she was going.
We walked through the American Waterfront and Port Discovery, which side note they play epcot music in Port Discovery and its really strange. Then we hopped on over to Mysterious Island and got in a long line that we could only hope was for the Center of The Earth.
When we officially got to the main entrance of the ride the wait time was at 180 minutes, 3 hours my friends. And once again apparently this is normal, so we might as well stick it out.

26394330770_8d534035e1_z.jpg

I’m also super glad to say that this was the longest wait we waited in for the entire 3 days in the parks, you just have to make sure you use the fastpass system right.
Thank goodness we had pop tarts to snack on for the wait

26650455636_4ca01a80d9_z.jpg

We entered the volcano and the queue line was so messed up that I couldn’t figure out how they made it work. There are so many twist and turns and for me never being on it I had no clue when we were getting close to the front.

Alicia was kind enough to document our wait time on her snapchat, this also was nice because it showed us how long we ended up waiting.

26584059502_77cec702a5_z.jpg

While waiting a going into every alcove possible we noticed that there was a group with bunny ears further up from us. This became a game of where are the bunnies? And how did they possibly get over there.
We also talked about everything we wanted to accomplish today. Then came the question where do you want to eat lunch and dinner? I had a few options picked out after reading all the menus. So since I was the only one who did this we decided to walk around and read some menus afterwards.
Soon the bunnies were out of sight and we came to the front of the line to get on the elevators, surprisingly it wasn’t a 3 hour wait just over 2 hours.

26072943793_39461d18e4_z.jpg

The “show” started from there. Once entering the elevator, the lights flicker, and you hear the clicking and clanging like you are going down into the center of the earth. After your quick ride you enter another room and line to board your car. Alicia warned us a head of time that the CM will tell us to take your bags off way before entering any attraction. Also their way of telling us is by tapping on their shoulders. After awhile you learn to take it off before a CM notices you have one.
We were next climbing aboard our vehicle and off to see what lies in the center of the earth.
“The enigmatic genius Captain Nemo has unearthed a heretofore unknown world deep underground. During your journey on board a unique subterranean vehicle, the volcano suddenly shakes and erupts, taking you where even Captain Nemo has never been before.”
Photos and videos are strictly prohibited on all attractions in the parks, the CMs will make that very clear.
At one point in the ride lightning hits, Marisa screamed so loud and didn’t stop. I was literally pooping my pants because it was so funny. Add that to the list of things about Tokyo Disney I had no idea what to expect when it came to the attractions that I wasn’t familiar with.
Overall this attraction was pretty cool and the sceneries and details were on point. However it was too short for my liking, once it got fast paced and exciting it just sort of ended.
Next up on our agenda was too find Alicia’s Jasmine shirt.

No luck on Mysterious Island so we had to take a trip over to the Arabian Coast.

Oh man, THANK YOU for posting this picture! This was the coolest little item in the queue for Journey, but my sister and I realized that we never got a picture of it. On our last go through later in the evening on our last day we intended to snap one but that part of the queue was roped off since it wasn't that busy. I could not find a picture of it anywhere online either. I mean, it's a Nautilus styled flying machine, but what is it called?

Glad you had so much fun.

Loving your trip report! I go to Japan all the time, but I love reading people's reactions who go for the first time. :)
Also, I think the reason you had so many kids/teens on your trip was because you went right before the new school year in Japan started, so they were probably there on their spring break.

Bummer about the monster cafe!! I've seen some youtube stuff about it & Kara & I wanted to plan it in, probably still will though!!
YAY! DISNEYSEA!!! Aw man, I remember seeing Alicia's snaps & being baffled with how crowded it was!!! I'm hoping it's not TOO crazy when we're there! I seriously can't wait for DS, it's so gorgeous, and SO different!
That fp race seems intense!!
As does Journey, glad you made it through the queue! Is that the best route to go? FP tot, then standby it? I'm still working out kinks of the park days!! Lol.
AH! I have a MIGHTY need for those shirts!!!

I am so enjoying this trip report! Keep it going!
I am so excited for the rest of this report because now its all Disney!!!!

I wish I knew what it was called. I thought it was cool looking so I snapped the picture. But I'm glad I could help you with the picture

That would make sense. I just love the fact that they all just go in groups and match.

I hope you have better luck with it, maybe its different for lunch?
It was crazy busy but its nothing us crazy disney fans can't handle.
I don't know if you wanted to get toy story done? I mean its the same as WDW so we skipped it. Getting a fastness for ToT worked great for us because its closer to the park entrance. So we just grabbed them and headed straight to Journey. It worked great for us, so I would definitely recommend that. But if you have any other questions about the parks let me know!!!

A Dazzling Place I Never Knew

Walking through Mysterious Island to Mermaid lagoon/Arabian coast is something pictures just can’t capture. By this time I turned to Alicia and said “I love this place” over 100 times and it kept becoming a recurring theme.
For some reason we thought splitting up would be a good idea. Marisa wanted to get popcorn at mermaid lagoon and Alicia wanted a shirt. So we left Marisa and told her not to move, we would come back to her. We left our pocket wifi with her so if something happened she could text Alicia (then we realized she didn’t have her japan phone number) And I went with Alicia to take a million photos of the Arabian Coast.
Popcorn…popcorn is HUGE in Tokyo Disney. They have different flavors all around the park and you will see people carrying cute themed popcorn bins throughout the park. With popcorn being so huge, the lines are also long. It’s like an attraction in itself.

When heading to the coast the smell of curry floods the air and all I wanted out of life was to get the curry popcorn. But we had things to accomplish so popcorn would have to wait.
The Arabian Coast!!!! You walk down some stairs and you enter the most beautiful courtyard. And it made me sad because we will never get a park this detailed in the world.
Alicia told me how on her first day of training they brought her here and she cried because Agrabah in Disney world does not even compare.

To the right you have the double decker carousel

Straight ahead you have The Magic Lamp Theater which we will get to later on

And to the left you have the quick service and gift shop.

In the middle was a fountain

We headed to the little gift shop where Alicia got her shirt.
I like what I call the character scrub shirts, but they have become so popular and easy to get back in the states that I didn’t want to follow that crowd. So when Alicia got hers I found an awesome Aladdin/ Arabian coast shirt. But I didn’t pick it up because over $50 for a t-shirt was out of my budget.

Alicia wasted no time putting on her new purchase and taking pictures with her home for the past year.

26651292786_b6a866f6a4_z.jpg

As we were getting ready to leave a group of girls came over to Alicia (just your basic japanese fans, which we will talk about later on) and asked to get a picture with us. That was a new thing for me.
We headed out of the coast and back to the lagoon.

We found Marisa who was a happy child with some caramel popcorn.

Once having the group back together we headed to Casbah Food Court because this was on my list of places to eat.

One of the best things about Tokyo or japan in general is their food displays. They come in handy when trying to figure out what comes in the meal.

We all seemed to find something we liked on the menu and planned to come back for lunch. So to keep us tied over until then we went to get what would be my favorite snack of all time…chandu tails!!!
