She's Going To Show Him The World, a September 2016 PTR

I know you've been awaiting a Free Dining announcement. Kenny the Pirate has just posted this information HERE

Rumored FD with possible booking date of 4/25:

  • August 23 – October 1
  • November 15-21
  • November 26-28
  • December 10-21

YAY! Thanks for thinking of us. We would love to get in on that deal, and will be waiting and ready to call. We can't believe that it is getting to be that time already. Now we'll just need availability at WL, but we'll try for it as soon as we can, and perhaps already having reservations there will help. Currently the booking website shows Standard view as being sold our for our trip, but we've had that situation before and been able to apply Free Dining.

Stuff is going great, and we have been busy with Allie and Marshall but have picked up some shirts at the Disney store that should become dresses for the trip. We'll write that up once we have time to get to it.

Yesterday was another significant milestone in our September trip planning since it was the day Free Dining was announced. Much of our planning for this trip has been based on the possibility of getting free dining or at least a resort discount because nobody has to pay rack rate in September, right? With three rooms booked we knew our options to switch resorts to get a discount would be limited, but we figured WL would give us a pretty good chance at getting a discount. Well, here's how that went.

I got up at 4AM because the rumors had indicated that Monday April 25th would be the day, so I set my alarm an hour early and then got up and checked my phone.

I did not get up at 4AM. I was up at 12:45 and 2 though.

There was nothing on the DIS about the dining announcement, so I checked the wdw website, and sure enough there it was. That was better then caffeine, now I was awake! I called the number it showed and wasn't able to get through the first time. No big deal, probably just the initial rush, right. Maybe the phone operators are just grabbing their coffee and settling in. Well, I kept trying that number and a couple of other reservations numbers and either got the "please try again later" message or a phone company "all circuits are busy" message. Hmm, not a great sign, but I figured I'd see what was online while I tried calling. At 4:15 AM the only WL free dining option online was a club level room, which would be nice, but was still over a thousand dollars more than our current reservation. While I kept trying to call, I looked into the Villas and saw that we could switch to a studio and save about $500 over our current reservation. At least we'd still have pretty much the same location. I went and asked Melissa about it, since Marshall had decided breakfast sounded like a good idea.

It was 4:45 by the time he came back to bed and I had forgotten all about him getting up to check for free dining. It took me a full two minutes to process what he meant by "there's no availability". I thought for a moment it was a weird dream.

Melissa was open to the idea of a Studio Villa, but we both wanted to talk to someone to see if we could get free dining in the main building. When I checked back online 10 minutes later, the studio villas were sold out. That did show me that the online availability was being updated, so I could get some information even if I couldn't get through on the phone. Looking at all of our options, I saw that FW cabins were nicely priced, and actually would be over $1100 cheaper than our existing reservation. We figured that getting three together would be difficult, and the location is definitely more remote. As I later checked availability we saw at times the studio Villas at Boardwalk or Beach club were available for about a $500 discount over our WL standard view room. On our own we probably would have jumped on this option, especially if we could have gotten Beach Club to experience Stormalong bay, but we knew there was no chance of moving all three rooms, and the villas weren't available for long.

If it was just our room I would have been all over a move to Beach Club for this trip. I think the proximity to at least one park is going to be really nice with the baby.

While I was at work I kept checking and trying to call, and didn't have any luck getting through.

He kept bugging me at work too, I was dealing with a Monday crisis, which has now crept into Tuesday. Basically I had left it to him to deal with. I appreciate that we are both on the same page as far as this planning stuff goes, that way when one of us gets busy the other is there to jump on deals and such.

In the late afternoon though I saw a really interesting possibility open up online. We could get a Standard View room at Animal Kingdom Lodge and save $1100. We could also do a room only offer there but the savings would only be $800, so free dining was the better deal for us. We really preferred WL, but for that kind of savings it was worth considering.

We talked about it on my way to pick up Allie from daycare and even considered booking a second reservation. I love AKL and want to stay there sometime but have had a hard time convincing Paul that this would be a good idea. We decided while I grabbed Allie he would call and see how everyone else felt about such a drastic resort move.

I called my parents and our friends and discussed the possibility of making a lodge switch. Almost everybody was on board, but our friends were really looking forward to the boat transportation we had raved about at WL, and they knew that AKL didn't have any boats. They decided to stay put at WL and hope for a discount, and we agreed to stay with it too.

Finally while we were out shopping at Target at almost 8:00 PM (when the reservations line closes) I was able to get through and make it into the phone hold queue, where they said to expect two hours on hold. I was so glad to finally have a spot that I was more than willing to wait. We listened to the hold music Disney songs on speaker phone while we did our shopping and headed home. About an hour and 20 minutes later a very nice castmember picked up and cheerfully asked how she could help. I mentioned we were hoping to switch to free dining and gave her our info and she asked if we were Disney Visa card holders. She was glad to hear that we are, since that opens up extra availability for them, even though we don't get early access to the offer anymore. She checked though, and said there was no availability for either the free dining promotion or room only discount in any room at WL during our stay. She did offer to switch us to Old Key West which would save us a little over $600, but that wasn't enough savings to justify loosing the great location of WL. We were able to finally add Marshall to our reservation, since he now has a birthday to enter in the system, so the call wasn't a total waste but sure wasn't as productive as we had hoped. She did suggest that we keep watching, as something might open up later, so that's our plan.

I told him just to be patient, something will work out.

I agree we just have to wait, but in the mean time I keep looking for options.

Looking online this morning the availability seems to be better with the "Back to School Savings" room discount, so even though it doesn't save quite as much as with free dining it does give us some lower cost options. Here's a few:

Cars Suite at AoA: $500 Savings over WL Std View
POFQ River View: $1200 savings over WL Std View
POR River View: $1100 savings over WL Std View
VWL Studio Villa: $20 more than WL Std View
OKW Studio Villa: $1000 savings over WL Std View

If we arrive at WL one day later we can get free dining with a courtyard view room for $900 in savings over our current reservation, but we have one less day of dining and have to find a room for our arrival night. It might still be a possibility though because we could do a lot with $900. Mainly it gives us hope that something will open up, and gives me a reason to keep checking the website.

To be continued... Check back later to see what we wind up doing, and whether my husband goes totally insane.

That's too bad that you couldn't get free dining on the first go around. I've been following the free dining discussions and the latest ray of hope is that the unsold rooms that travel agents reserved for clients will be released back into inventory by midnight Friday.

Have you looked into booking with the magical agency? They have good deals but only if it is during their exclusive dates.

BCV would have been awesome.

One night in a room only would be a lot of trouble but doable.

Thanks for the info. I looked into magical agency but we aren't in their date window. That is exciting about the possibility of rooms being released. At least the website makes it easy to check availability.

We won't arrive until Saturday evening, so I could see staying offsite for one night, or we actually could get a room at WL for $300, but we might then have to switch rooms, and our dining plan would be short a day. It would be nicer to switch the whole reservation, and hopefully we will be able to.

We definitely would have liked BCV, or even a FW cabin, but WL is still our first choice. We'll see how it goes.

We got Free Dining!!! We are so excited. I have been checking every so often online to see what's available (ok, so maybe it was every few minutes at times) but this afternoon Standard View showed up with the free dining offer. I tried to switch to it and got an error first, but wound up getting it, and then I was able to get it for my parents and our friends as well. WooHoo!! We are excited.

In our case since we have three of us on the plan and will be doing some character meals the dining plan saves just a bit over paying out of pocket. The big deal for us is having it pre paid and not worrying about prices. Then, once we already had decided to pay for the DDP and park hoppers getting to apply the discount and get the dining for free is a big savings. For us it saved right at $1200 and for the couples it was over $800 each. Not bad for the result of some web stalking and a whole lot of wishful thinking.

135 days to go!!! We can't wait.

I'm so very happy for you. :cheer2: I'm sure that it is a relief to have it finally booked. In a normal year it probably would have been easy to get free dining right away, but with half of the resort closed off, all bets were off. But it is great that it finally became available for you, your parents and your friends. It must have been a little nerve wracking in the meantime. ::yes::

We are having fun planning our upcoming June trip at POR with the free dining bounceback. DH and I have used the dining plan once before, but it will be new for the rest of the group. Our main problem is that the number of our ADR's exceed the number of our table service credits. Lunch at Liberty tree Tavern will probably be the OOP meal.

It is fun to dine for free. ;)

Thanks, we are glad we got to apply a discount, especially the one we really hoped for.

We have an extra TS meal planned as well, and ours will probably be breakfast at WCC. We also often buy our QS breakfasts OOP, at least until we see that we will have enough QS to cover the rest of the trip. Then there's those wonderful snacks. Mmmm we love those.

We planned to pay OOP for breakfast, too. Do you know if orange juice is a snack credit? I've heard that they raised the price to $4.29.

Yes Orange Juice is a snack credit, and at that price a pretty good use of one. We usually use our mugs at breakfast but getting orange juice would be nice.

For more info on snack credits there is an amazingly comprehensive list here: http://www.disboards.com/threads/2014-confirmed-snacks-thread.3215018/

It makes me hungry just thinking about it. :)

Today is our Double Digit Day! In just 99 days we will be at Disney World!

We have been super busy lately and haven't finished getting the countdown chain together, but we are still super excited and preparing for the trip.

We also hit our local Disney Store for some new clothes for the trip. Melissa is pretty busy so these probably won't turn into dresses, but at least Allie will have some new shirts.

Marshall also got a new outfit and a new friend. When he saw the otter from Finding Dory it was love at first sight and he had to have it. It was already pretty damp with baby drool by the time we checked out.

It was very cute, and we couldn't say no. Allie has a stuffed Eyore that she got when she was about his age and she still sleeps with it. As for Marshall, he is already wearing 12-18 month clothes, and he isn't even 6 months old yet. He is a happy big guy though, and we are looking forward to taking him to Mickey's Big House.

Our next step is Fastness + selection, and we'll be back as time permits to discuss our plans.

Those tee shirts are very cute. I stopped at our Disney store yesterday looking for bargains. Marshall is getting big. :)

You will get to see a lot of new things when you go in September. I bet you can't wait. :)

Thanks. It is fun to find new Disney stuff for the trip. We are really looking forward to the new Soarin and the Frozen ride in Norway, since our last trip was just before it closed to be re-imagined. We are also really looking forward to being at Wilderness Lodge.

98 days... ;)

Time is moving along so quickly! At least it feels this way since my DD is graduating soon. I love the countdown chain and extra cute photos of Marshall. We need to get him in the avatar soon before he gets any bigger;). He is really growing fast and looks so healthy and strong. I can picture him being a real Disney Parks Commando soon.

Are your friends who are going with you all set with their itinerary or are they following yours?

Exciting WL is our favorite resort. We were lucky several years in a row (12 to be exact) finding a good deal that allowed us to stay there.

We'll be visiting almost the exact same times (Sept 10-20) and staying at CBR. We are super excited that F&W will start earlier than normal.

Love the count down chain.

GrampaJim checking in. Less than 100 days and we can't wait! Free dining, Allie, Marshall, WL. It's going to be great
Hi Dad! It is gonna be a great trip, just like the last ones. We are so excited.

Time flies. We can't believe Marshall turns 6 months old this week. Do you have a graduation trip planned with your daughter?

Marshall is going to be a busy boy, so I think he will find plenty to do in the parks, although he might not be as content to sleep in the stroller as Allie was.

Our friends are going along with our plans. They wanted to do all of the ADRs with us, and my parents will too so that will be the basis of the schedule. We have hung out with them at Disneyland and we generally enjoy the same things, so it should work out well. There are a few extra things we figure they should make sure to see being that it is the first trip ever for one of them and the first onsite trip for the other. We're sharing all of our plans with everybody, then they can pick and choose what they want to join in on.

Welcome, and thanks for stopping by. We love WL and are excited to be going back. POR was great too, and we'd probably even consider sleeping in a car to get to go back every year, but we do what we can. 12 years straight is a nice long streak for visiting WDW, especially at WL.

The countdown chain is a lot of fun. We have done it every year, and Allie really gets excited to tear off a link each night and watch it get shorter. We got the file for it from the DIS boards, and it is posted here. We'll share pics as it gets shorter.

We just got back from our trip to POR. We had room 1401 and our son had room 1408, which was really convenient. I can see the appeal of free dining. We saved a lot of money. Our daughter, grandson and her DH joined us for two nights, so we used some of the table credits for them. It saved our son and two grandsons from having to spend a lot of time in restaurants. Our meal at Boatwrights was really good. Everyone loved their entrees. I had the prime rib and it was better than the one DH had last August. Our other restaurants were good, too - Liberty Tree Tavern, 'Ohanas, Cape May dinner, Wolfgang Puck Express lunch and Tusker House breakfast. It was a very busy trip, though. And we liked the bus situation much better at the deluxe resorts. But we loved the facilities at POR, especially the pool, the room, and the convenience of the food court.

We stopped at the WL on this trip. I think you'll have a great time there. It still looks amazing. :)

That's great, we're glad you had a nice family trip to POR. I'm also glad that free dining worked out for you. It is a different approach to dining, but can work out great. I'm glad that Boatwrights was good for you. We sure enjoyed it last trip, but we don't have it on the schedule for this time. I do think we will visit the POR food court though. We're also planning on LTT, Ohana, and WPE so it is great to hear about positive experiences.

Speaking of positives, we're also glad to hear that WL looked nice. We saw it during the main pool refurb in 2014 and felt it still had most of its charm, so I expect this project won't affect the experience during the construction overall that much. We are looking forward to the slightly better buses, and especially to the nice close trip to MK.

We made our final payment yesterday, so we are officially paid in full! Our parents and friends are as well, so we are good to go.

We are crazy excited and can't believe the trip is so close.

We are at 38 days now!

Taking the year off in betwen was hard and not having Disneyland passes for the last 11 months makes us even more ready for a good dose of Disney Magic.

Melissa sent me these pictures of Marshall the other day, and I think he is ready to find out what this Mickey stuff is all about.

I can't wait to see his reaction to all of the characters. I hope he enjoys them and isn't tortured by them like his sister was.

We also figured out our airport transportation this week. Our friends changed their flights to be on ours both ways, which should make it pretty nice.

The logistics of getting 8 people and all of our luggage to LAX from our house was a little daunting.

We figured out it would be tight in our Yukon with the 6 of us and our luggage, and our friends would have to drive separately and pay to park their car too.

It's a little over 66 miles away and we don't have a car that would fit everyone. So we decided to have a private shuttle come pick us up and deliver us right at the terminal. They are supposed to have carseats too which will be nice so we dont have to lug them all the way to Florida and back.

Now we just hope that van shows up at 4:00 AM that morning. I did leave enough time for us to drive if it doesn't come through, but we hope to not have to go there.

I also got everybody to take a look at what they want from Garden Grocer, and with three families we will have just enough of an order to meet the $200 order and get $2 delivery. Everyone is getting two cases of water, and we are gettign diapers and some snacks, but we aren't going to over do it this year...

We really don't spend a whole lot of time in the room and with free dining we don't need much food. Diapers this year are a must and finding room for them in luggage would be difficult.

We are flying United, so we have to pay for each checked bag, and are hoping everything will fit in three bags. I just need to not bring all of my clothes. (I probably won't need many heavy jackets and jeans...)

Paul is a serious overpacker...

And I want to have room to bring home the stuff we buy, so I will have to watch what I take. I better start packing now...

It is almost time to dig the suitcases out of storage!

That's really neat, since I am also an early packer, while Melissa tends to be a bit more last minute...

In the time between now and the trip we have a couple really big things going on. First off this weekend we'll be welcoming a new member to our family. Allison is getting a corgi puppy named Ratchet. He comes home this Saturday and she is beyond excited.

She is also starting first grade which is a big deal for us since her kindergarten was only 3 days a week and private.

So she'll be going to the real school down the street for five days a week. School starts 2 weeks before our trip, and we'll be taking her out this time, but depending on how that goes we might not choose to go in September for future trips.

I think that's about all for this update. We're sorry we haven't been able to post more, but there isn't a whole lot to talk about sicne we haven't done much for the trip but look forward to it.

and we are definitely looking forward to it.
