I have stayed solo several times. The first was POR (April 2014). I loved my room in Alligator Bayou. One night, pretty late, I accidentally got off at the wrong bus stop at the resort. I thought, not a big deal, I'll just walk with all the other people getting off toward my room. They all seemed to disappear within a minute or two and then I was walking through these winding paths with lots of vegetation not completely sure which way I was going. I knew it was probably fine, and it did turn out to be fine, but I was irritated with myself for not being more aware because I felt vulnerable and I didn't like that.
Then next trip (Oct 2014)I arrived very late and stayed one night at Pop Century and switched to Wilderness Lodge. I figured Wilderness Lodge would feel "safer" because of the interior space. Since it was triple the cost of POP, I decided so save some money and stay at POP that first night.
I always have liked Wilderness, but I ended up falling in love with Pop Century and before I would never (I don't know why) have considered staying there. It felt very compact and safe, well lit, etc. IF you are saying in the 50s, 60s, or 70s, you are close to the main pool and Classic Hall and there are always people around and again feels very safe.
So my next trip (June 2015) I stayed the whole time at Pop Century and loved it. It was fun to walk over and check out Art of Animation too. The trip after that (August 2015) I decided to spurge and stay AKL club level. It was very nice - I love AKL, but I really missed POP!
So I went back to POP in April this year. I rented a car for the first time and that gave me freedom to go to places like AKL to eat, but still stay at POP, and let's face it, save money so I could justify more trips! I have another trip to POP already booked!
So I know you said moderate, but consider Pop Century. I LOVED POR, but just be more aware of where you are going if you are traveling late at night since it is so spread out with so much vegetation. I have also stayed at POFQ and CSR (multiple times), but not solo. I actually love CSR, think it has a great location, is beautiful, and have never had my Disney buzz interrupted by seeing people doing business as many people have mentioned.
When you are alone, know where you are going, walk with purpose, have your phone with you, and you will be fine. I tried my first solo trip after getting divorced. I wasn't sure how I'd do, but I LOVED the freedom of doing whatever I want whenever I want. I think it would be hard for me to get used to going with other people again and having to actually compromise and not have the trip revolve around me! (harhar!). Do I wish I had a family (no kids, parents deceased) to go with me, of course! But if life gives you lemons, you make lemonade!
