If they are sitting in front of you at a show and they hold it up in front of you, then essentially you're watching the show through someone's ipad. That's the problem.
Also, not everyone feels comfortable complaining about it. Maybe there were people around you who were annoyed, but they didn't say anything. Some people just aren't confrontational.
I'd like to think most people would be considerate if you asked them to lower their iPad, but you just never know. The unknown reaction that some people may have to being asked, can be stressful.
True, I can't control their response, but I can control my approach. The point I was trying to make is that asking doesn't always equate to being confrontational or complaining, like I took your post to mean. Things can always be handled respectfully and in a non-confrontational manner. However, if people are not comfortable with asking nicely, then it's on them to be annoyed through a parade, show, concert...
