Pacer/Wogging GROUP for 15-16 minutes per mile Disney Marathon 2013

Guys….

Just keep this thought in mind as you pass the line on Saturday and/or Sunday. You are responsible for your own run. It may be a little counterintuitive but try to make mile 1 your SLOWEST mile. Physiologically, the body will want to stay with the very first pace it settles into on race day. You can push it quicker, but only a beak dowan will slow you up. Think of you last couple average paces for your long runs and try to hit that pace at mile 1 or even just a little slower. That assures that you are not programming a personal best in the first part of the race.

Nice deep and easy breathes in the corral. Look around at your new friends. You will see many distant stares, hear idle chat and see a lot of fidgeting. Find you inner piece and enjoy the prerace visit with Sean, Drew and Alison. Laugh at the bad jokes and rock to the music. Reflect during the National Anthem. And enjoy the fireworks. If you are in the last couple corrals, you will possibly be under the bridge and have a show just over your heads.

Remember, if you are in the three last corrals, you have time for one more potty break as soon as the leaders kick off. Once you cross the line, keep thinking about keeping a relentless pursuit of forward momentum. Everything you do should be in an effort to move one foot in front of another. Try running through the first potty urge or so to see if it is nerves/mental or actual. Remember, you can do it in a car 30 miles from the next rest stop, you should be able to make another couple miles in the race.

Watch your splits. Again, try to keep mile 1 at training pace or just under then let the day start to come to you. If you are pushing past above 16 mm, try to avoid taking photo ops, unless it is one you just got to have. Keep rolling through the little mental games that got you through your long runs. These will relax you early and be very helpful as you pass through the dreaded tough spots.

Yes, you will have a tough spot in the race. It may be just a twinge, but more than likely you will have something hit that screams STOP! Put your mental toolbox in high gear. Think, I will run until the next mile marker, water stop, overpass, streetlight or even next crack in the road. Latch into the runner in front of you and let them drag you for a while, try to pass a runner, or just relax everything as you run. You will find your solution to the immediate issue and make some distance before the next one hits. Talk to your neighbor. Make a joke. If you are running with a friend, have everyone bring a set of jokes and tell a joke each mile marker. Play to the crowd. You will come upon small groups of folks who are just looking for a purple jersey or their runner. Pump them up. If you can make them yell for you, you will find the strength to pick it up, again.

All this to say good luck. You will find that even if you are the very last runner, you will still have folks yelling for you as you pass. I seriously think that everyone will make the finish. If you don’t, make sure that you gave you best and then you know you did everything that you could have done. Not everyone will finish their race and many will stumble and have issues that slow them up. No matter how good and poor the day goes, remember you are doing something that only 1% of the population will every try and of the 99%, many who will never leave the couch.

Thank your friends and family as you leave for the start. They all sacrifice as much as you. Remember those who have a hard time with marathon distances. Smile as you remember those who tried to discourage you and laugh as you think that those are the same folks who do not have the courage to start.

Good luck. You are ALL athletes

Very well said and inspirational. I thank you for this!

Just wanted to check in on everyone here. How are ya'll doing? My toe joint is still on/off giving me problems when I walk/run so I haven't done any long miles since weekend before last. Gonna try again this weekend.....but I am probably not going to push past about 10-12 miles. Extra cross training has been the name of my game to keep finishing a possibility(in my mind). I have been doing a ton of elliptical, strength training, and some biking....with walking sprinkled in there.

I've been sick with what they say is bronchitis. I'm hoping to be healthy enough in two weeks! This has been going on for over a week. Ugh. I won't be pushing it by doing any running u til I know my lungs are better.

Can you guys tell me where on the rundisney you would find your corral start?

Merci.

I am really excited and yet terribly nervous about this race. I signed up for it when the gates opened back in spring and thinking of how much time I had...now here it is coming up.

It is on your bib. Go to print waiver, it's there.

I waited to respond til numbers came out. Bonus that we also know our start corrals. I will be starting in Corral G and while I expect to pass some along the way, I do not think I will catch up with anyone other than the F corrals. I will have my WISH Team shirt on for the event, so if you do see me, please say hi!

I am in the G corral also.

Looks like we may have a few of us to start out! I always get to the start early and try to get seated toward the front of the corral. I can save you a seat if you want to start out together.

I want to start out with several of you guys.....but I don't know if it is the best idea for me to move back. I was placed in E because I put in a finish time of 5:01......but I am probably going to be closer to 7 hours finishing. I think at this point being undertrained I should stick where I am at in case I have to go a bit slower.....but I am torn because of the comraderie scooting back a little bit would offer. I guess at this point I need to "run my own race". Ya'll will most likely catch up to me. I will join you in that case.

Terapin, I think ultimately you are planning to go a bit faster than me. Do you want to start out together in E and then you can go faster if you need too?

I'd like to join but I'm in F, and like someone else, I do not want to move backwards. I need all the buffer i can get from the balloon ladies!

I've really thought this over, as meeting up and running with this group would be fun. But since I am in D, I better stay there in case I need the buffer too, though i am still trying to finish in under 7 hours. I have just been running so inconsistently! I submitted proof of time, which got me into corral D. But I haven't seen those times in quite a while. I probably will start near the back of D or even E. If I am seeing any faster times on race day, I would really like to stop for some pictures. So I still think I may finish in the 6 to 7 hour range regardless.

Maybe we can post back here after the event to see how everyone did, what our experiences were like.

Works for me!

I think I would join a pacer group if I saw it...I am in G but the person I am 'running' this with is in H for whatever reason. If we see you then we might join along....for the full.

Not to worry, as already said. You've got to run your own event. Even for those of us in the same corral, we may hang out and enjoy company while waiting. Once the bibs cross the start, you've got to go with what works for the day. I never can predict and at the time, I do what works. MY DS is my "escort" and goes whatever pace I set. For those of us on the edge, you cannot be adjusting your pace to one that you may regret as the distance builds. (Too much to fast)

I might go slower, and if I've got it after halfway, then move on with what is left. I cannot ever predict. If it is playing out to be a warmer day, I always try to front end my pace because it is cooler. I will slow it as the heat builds. Event day looks like it will be warmer than I like so my pace may be 14-15 starting then 15-16 as the sun rises.

If you are hanging out at the finish, WISHers usually wait by the W in the family reunion area. I will look for you there. Come up for high fives and hugs all around. I will definitely be there late since I am planning on using most of the time available. Don't be shy, say hello.

Don't stress, look for the fun. It's Disney!
