You are never going to get 100% security, it just isn't possible. All we can expect is that the airline staff are encouraged to do the best job they can and that the flying public help and support them rather than give them grief. You try looking at an Xray machine for any length of time.

Did you see the news when they had the rep from Gatwick on saying that the boy had gone through the security checks which meant the other passengers were posed no threat! Checking documentation was a procedural error!!!!

The airline staff must have assumed he was with which ever adult was near by. How embarrasing for them
He`s from a local childrens home and likely he was trying to visit his dad in Lisbon. It breaks your heart.

Nothing to do with security as long as he wasn't carrying anything currently banned (everything at the time!). Security aren't there to check documentation. The documentation check to enter security is fairly cursory and at his age, he could still be on a parents passport - it is only the US that requires individual passports for children - not other EU countries.

The fault is with the airline or their handling agents at the gate - he should never have been allowed onto the jetway without documentation being presented for him - he couldn't be assumed to be with the nearest adult unless that person produced a boarding card for him.
