My Trip to the 2013 D23 Expo - That's a Wrap!

[Continued from Previous Post]

Then we moved on to the next room which was all about Mary Poppins.

This was a story board for the scene with the Penguins.

Various artist renderings for the film

This was the sign hung on opening day at the Chinese Theater.

They also had a film reel playing with interviews from the opening night. There were interviews with Walt, Dick Van Dyke, Julie Andrews, and others who participated in the film. We watched that all the way through too.

Here are the horses from the carousel.

Some more memorabilia

Background paintings, notice in the second one the little square they have cut out for live film to be inserted. See Fran's post below.

And some of the costumes from the film.

And the Handbag.

Some of the Mary Poppins Merchandise

In another room they had some photos from the period. I didn’t take pictures of all of them, just a few that I liked.

They also had a fan art contest. These were some of my favorites.

I loved seeing the props from Return to Oz, I loved that movie! Of course I had many a nightmare about that head changing woman.

I will definitely splurge for the sorcerers ticket when I manage to get to an Expo, all those hours wasted in line makes me sad. But you still had to line up with the sorcerer tickets? Just not as long?

There was still line waiting involved, just not major like three and four hours at a time. I'll definitely cover that as well. In fact my next update includes waiting.

What great displays. The dresses are so beautiful but I am not sure I can see the characters in them. The costume were great to see. I am inclined to agree with Fran about that series being scary. I tried watching it on Netflix at night in the dark after Scotty had gone to sleep and I just couldn't do it.:rotfl:

The Mary Poppins exhibit looks like it was wonderful! That has always been a favorite of mine. The characters of Mary and Bert are so wonderful!

Nice update, the costume are beautiful and the Mary Poppins display takes me back to being a kid.

Very nice pictures from Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives. For the 2nd Expo in a row that we were unable to visit the Archives with everything going on at the Expo. Thanks for sharing your pictures Alison.

I asked Alison to take the photos of the background painting for MP because I am a great fan of Peter Ellenshaw, as I have versions of many of his paintings at home. In the one that shows the skies of London (the second one in sequence in Alison's post), if you look at the area in the center of the sky sort of high in the clouds, you will see a little rectangle cut out of the painting.

This is where they insert the film of Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins coming down through the sky supported by her unbrella.

I thought it was sort of neat the way they left room for that.

Fran

Loooove the pics you posted here! :)

It would be so cool to have a look at all the items in the display cabinets in person but seeing everything on photos is also great!

Thanks for the insight look!

Amazing pictures of the designer dresses and Mary Poppins. Thanks for sharing.

(Is it bad that I enjoyed looking at the designer dresses more than the MP memorabilia??? *hangs head in shame*)

Hi Fran. Yes agreed Peter was an amazing artist and love the one of the London skyline! He did some wonderful pictures of Ireland too which can be viewed in various places over there ( my parents are Irish ) . How cool re the cut out for our Jools! :-)

I love all the dresses and costumes. I have to say so that as much as I love the designer dresses in their own right and would not mind having one or two of them in my evening gown collection (Aurora and Cinderella), I really do not see a link to the corresponding princesses with the possible exception of Snow White.

Love the Mary Poppins memorabilia. :lovestruc Did you hear on the news about Dick Van Dyke's car fire yesterday? :faint: So scary. He's such a good sport thou, funny in the interview as usual.

What time is your meet with Ellen tomorrow? ;)

I think we're heading to DTD today as we won't have time tomorrow and the kids love the shops, even to window shop. It's so much fun. :thumbsup2

Then back to the beach. :goodvibes I just can't get enough of the beach. And guess what we had for dinner last night. Leftover Chen's; fed my four and my friend. :rotfl2:

I *loved* the Tiana dress - the color was gorgeous, the beading lovely and it seemed so ethereal. :lovestruc

Hi Fran,

I did notice that and I wondered about it. Thank you for sharing that. I enjoy his work, it gives the skyline a softer look. It's nice seeing you on here.:flower3:

Love the dresses but someone of them I would have no idea which princess they belonged too.

The MP memorabilia is amazing! Anyone know the story on the bag? I keep hearing it was just "rediscovered."

I would give anything to sit with the 2 of you and just listen for hours about all things Disney so fascinating all the knowledge :goodvibes Loved the pictures
I tried watching Once Upon a Time for a few weeks, just couldn't get into it

:offtopic: Forgive if posted on your other thread I am so far behind but California Grill re-opening Sept 9 Ressie phone lines open Aug 26 you probably knew that but just in case :thumbsup2 ( that little Off Topic should have a smile ! )

I know I thought the same thing about the dresses. A little odd, but very pretty.

I really enjoyed the news reel they had playing, some great interviews on the red carpet. I wish I could have shown that.

I'm sorry that you've missed it for the past two Expos. I always enjoy it, although on one of the days, I heard someone go past the line and say, "Don't bother wasting your time." I thought that was a rather odd comment.

Thanks for all your neat insight. Next time, point out cool things like that to me when I'm in front of the picture! :rotfl2:

She wants me to add that we have arranged to get a copy of that picture from a guy who used to work for Disney and at the bargain price of 50% off where it is selling everywhere else.

Loooove the pics you posted here! :)

We have a lot of Ellenshaw art around the house. Very cool!

Yeah, Snow White was the only one that I got the real correlation either. The others were pretty much just pretty gowns.

Love the Mary Poppins memorabilia. :lovestruc Did you hear on the news about Dick Van Dyke's car fire yesterday? :faint: So scary. He's such a good sport thou, funny in the interview as usual.

Yeah, I heard about the Dick Van Dyke thing. Pretty freaky, just glad he's OK.

I hope you're having a good time at the parks, now that you've turned your phone off. :p

I had a hard time figuring them out. If I couldn't read some of the cards in my photos I would have had no idea!

I didn't see anything about the bag being recently rediscovered on the card in the display, but I've been known not to read things all the way through. :rolleyes1

Well you should at least have the chance on October 5th!

PIO mentioned about the Cali Grill being open during our stay. I think it's an excellent idea, although I'm not sure I got back to her on that.

So after we finished at the Treasures we knew we had to hit the Disney Store. Normally this place is hit and miss for us, but since they were having special Expo only items, we had to check it out. I didn’t take any pictures, but here’s where we hit our first serious line. We probably waited about 45 minutes to an hour to get in here. If I think about timing, we did the show floor tour at quarter to one, and probably got to the archives around 1:30-1:45. I was probably 2:30-2:45 by the time that we got in line here. I’m sure we were in the store by 4:00PM, much sooner, but we also had to wait in line to check out as the area was far smaller than the Dream Store. I can’t imagine the people who waited during the Expo to get in and buy stuff. They ran out of stuff very quickly!

So once we waited our time they let us inside. Here are some shots of merchandise from inside the store. We ended up getting the Jack Ornaments, and the Jack statue.

I got this plate to go above the refrigerator in the new house.

And we got a couple of these Sorcerer Mickeys, they were a one per person kind of thing.

Then we got into another line to pay for all the stuff. We ended up standing behind a very nice couple that we ended up chatting with throughout our wait in line. We ended up chatting with them throughout the weekend and now we’re friends on FB! People you meet at D23 events are generally really nice and friendly.

After we paid for our loot, we headed over to look at the Sorcerer’s only Disney Store Silent Auction. It was closing in about an hour. There wasn’t anything there that we really fancied, so I just snapped a few more pictures of the show floor, now that it was almost ready for opening.

After that we headed up to the package check area to get the rest of our loot and head back to the hotel.

Here is a calm look at the area outside the convention center.

The hotel lobby had a life size Mike and Sulley for people to take pictures with. Not sure if it is still there, but it was up all weekend.

Next up, some of the only food porn you will get in this TR!

You guys are so close to your next trip. Our trip seems like it is forever away. My year has had a lot of waiting.:goodvibes
