Marathon Weekend 2017!

After a chat with @FFigawi, I think we're in agreement on "hosting" a meet-up at Beach Club!

Friday, 2 p.m., at Hurricane Hannah's - it's the pool bar accessible from the Boardwalk loop. We'll be in the bar area, but can also spread out into the table area.

I'll post updates closer to the date if there is inclement weather.

If you're planning to drop by, please let me know so I can give the bar a heads-up!

If I dont forget I think I can make that... Family comes in later that night, so should have afternoon off! Possibly myself and the Mrs.. :)

Sweet!!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Keep the RSVPs coming! I'm going to run a $150 tab for "first round" of drinks/sodas at the bar (no food - you're on your own for that if you're hungry!), so come and drink on my dime until the tab runs out!

Cool of you and @FFigawi to host the meet up. I am not sure I will be able to be come on Friday afternoon as I will be with the family and the afternoon is pretty booked up. But wishing everyone a good time and still interested in a pre-race connect if that remains in the works. Thanks to all who shared the new course maps, now where are those waivers!

Nothing says Disney like running in a parking lot. :)

Does that make my running in Erbil a Disney race? :rotfl:

It looks like you run Sunset blvd. inside of DHS,any chances of runners getting on ToT.There's no singles line at ToT but if you run with your magicband and get a FP+ for ToT for your estimated time to run into DHS the wait might not be too bad but then again thinking about it with the preshow and loading its not a very fast ride to get on and off but I have a feeling if its possible runners are gonna ride it.

@Keels and I already have our FP set up for ToT and RnRC. This new course will make riding them very much easier.

Okay now will a FP+ work if you haven't entered that park through the turnstiles.

My wife and I have ToT & RnRC FP set up as well...11:00 for ToT and 12:05 for RnRC. Gives us a window from 10:55-1:20 to get on at least one of the rides, hopefully landing there in the noon sweet spot :)

Anyone who rides Tower of Terror during a marathon takes guts, my stomach flips so bad on that, I can't imagine doing it during a marathon! I hope you all post if/what rides you do do, I could never do any rides, too risky, but find it entertaining to read others try it!

Okay now will a FP+ work if you haven't entered that park through the turnstiles.
Just to add to what others said Technically you are supposed to enter the park with the ticket you are using to book FP+ in advance with, but their systems don't talk so that's why it works.

So based on the marathon course map would people agree that the following "milestones" are a reasonable accurate guess as to their mile location:

Screen Shot 2016-12-16 at 6.26.04 AM.png

Based on one's pace and starting time it gives spectators in your family a "guess" as to when you would reach each of these locations. If you feel there is a location missing that you'd like to see added let me know.

Also attached is the "first draft" of the scheduled meet-ups. This is a launching point for a discussion on meeting locations, timeframes and the such as this is not a final copy. So I am open to ideas and suggestions to the contrary of what I've written. The maps were taken from the in process event guide that @Keels linked to this message board and I added notes to them. Below was my thought process on creating these location/timeframes which are based on what Disney has done the last two/three years (which guarantees nothing):

5k
The race "area" opens at ~4am which is 2 hours prior to the start of the race at 6am. Race transportation from hotels also starts at 4am. The corrals open at ~5am which is one hour prior to the start of the race. I propose meeting at the orange circle which is the furthest point from anything of real interest in the reunion area. I propose the timeframe of 4-5am because this timeframe other than arriving early would be the least likely timeframe to hinder anyone's warm-up plan or getting to the front of their corral if they wished to do so. I will be coming from AKL which means based on past experience I'll arrive roughly at 4:30am. I'll bring a sign with "DIS" on it for it to make it easier for everyone to find each other. Once the corrals open at 5am, people are free to stay there and mingle, or go to the corrals for front placement/or warm-ups. In my experience, I have found right at 5am in the corrals (specifically corral A since that is what I base my experience on) to be the best location for warming up. There is less people movement inside the corrals versus many of the other locations where people are trying to go from place A to Z (race retreat, VIP, dance floor, gear check, etc.). For anyone not in corral A wishing to warm-up with others, finding liked corral buddies at the meet-up would work well.

After the race is over, I typically head to the yellow X for viewing of the finish line. This year, the cartoon has been updated to show additional "general seating" in the area where I use to stand. However, I still find it to be a relatively good out of the way meeting place. Because of other vacation commitments, I can only stay there until 7am. However, if you finish prior to 7am look in that general area as I will have a "DIS" sign again. The buses back to the resorts do not start until ~7am because the race route overlaps the bus route and the last corral doesn't start until ~6:50am.

The reasoning and location of meeting is the same as the 5k. The timing is moved up to 3:30-4:30am for the meet-up because the start of the race is at 5:30am, and corral opening ~4:30am. I have no planned post-race meet up because the buses will run immediately upon finishing and I have vacation commitments.

Friday outside of race meet up
@Keels has set this up to be at Hurricane Hannah's at 2pm. I provided a map and general idea as to where this is at the Beach club.

The meet-up location has changed to a different good out of the place spot. In the past three years, if you go through Gear Check right at arrival you'll find a "nook" where they hold runners until they start the walk to the corrals. In my experience there have been some people, but not a ton in this area. The walk to the corrals is usually around 4-4:15am. So I propose meeting there anywhere from 3am until the walk starts (the black arrow is the direction of the walk to corrals). I will arrive around 3:30 with a "DIS" sign. By showing up this early it also allots us another 10-15 min of meet-up time as we walk to the corrals together. For anyone interested in warming-up, I propose doing so on the stretch of road next to A-H (as long as Disney does not change the setup). Just watch out for people heading to corrals, and to the woods to relieve themselves. No planned meet-up post-race.

The reasoning, location, and timing of meeting is the same as the HM. The warm-up suggestion is the same as the HM as well. Post-race I will head to the yellow X to watch for finishers. I will have a "DIS" sign and will be there till around 11am when I expect my mom to finish her M. After which I will likely head out because of vacation commitments.

Alright, that's the rough plan I've setup and if you have other suggestions that you feel would work better by all means let me know. Once we have a good plan in place I will incorporate this into the Dis'ers List that we'll put together once bib#/corral information is finalized.

Thanks!

Oh man this gave me butterflies, it is going to be here before we know it!

Thanks @DopeyBadger ! I will definitely look for you before the marathon. I will be dressed as Giselle from Enchanted so look out for me.

Also, do you think if I lie down on the floor kicking my legs and pounding my fists and scream they will release waivers today? Is it worth a shot?

Your mom's running the marathon? Outstanding!!!

First one too! She is doing her own personal "Dopey Challenge".

2014 - 5k
2015 - 10k
2016 - HM
2017 - M
2018 - DOPEY?!?! (<----- We'll see on this one as I want to see her survive the marathon before I'll consider allowing her to do this. Call it being an over-protective son.)

She always use to run occasionally when I was a kid, but with no rhyme, reason, or races. After I lost 100 pounds and got so into running she took up the hobby again as well. I'm very proud of how far she has come and interested to see how she does in Disney. If you think I am a competitive person, you've never met my mom... She takes it to a whole new level! She is really hard to rein in sometimes.

Us together after her first HM in August 2015.
