I dont think the exact date is published anywhere, closest I can find says Jan. 2013- late summer 2013. Wow that seems like a long time--it must be an extensive reno.

I agree..MSB is OK, but I don't quite get all the worship of the place. I think it's just the concept of change that many people can't handle. Throw in a little dash of drama..and presto! You have this thread and the dozens more just like it.

I don't understand the shock, but MOSTLY understand the outrage. This IS commercialism at its finest, but we're talking about Disney here! They'll slap a princess on just about everything, and people (including myself) will buy it. The idea of Main Street isn't going anywhere, it's just adapting to what "Main Street" is in the rest of America. So many small towns I come across will have a Starbucks somewhere on a corner.

I could just be real jacked up on caffeine (drinking the Starbucks kool-aid at the moment with my venti iced passion tea), but I don't think it's anything terrible. :)

It's not going to cease to exist, they're going to renovate the interior (so yes, it will be closed for awhile) and sell Starbucks coffee and specialty beverages. The name will not change, the exterior will not change, they will still sell some of the Disney baked goods (although since they haven't said which ones, it still may be that your favorite won't be there).

I guess it's all those years of guests clamoring for different coffee than Nescafe. Like those of us who used to frequent Pleasure Island, probably if you asked us "would we like more shopping and dining and entertainment at DTD" we would have said "sure" without realizing they meant to close the clubs and bring in third parties to add it.

Many feel that way for whatever reason (I don't - I don't find the place all that fabulous, even as a bakery), but what's done is done...it's going to happen.

I don't think it's the concept of change. Nobody is screaming about the Fountain View changing. For whatever reason, there is a lot more emotional attachment to the bakery. As for corporate sponsorship, I can think of three corporate sponsor logos currently displayed on Main Street. It's nothing new or different.

OK, I'm not the biggest fan of Starbucks coffee, either.

That being said: The coffee Disney has been using for YEARS is terrible. And while, as I said, I'm not Starbucks biggest fan...it is miles better than what I've been served on Disney property in recent years.

Does anyone know how long it will be closed? I'm very disappointed it is turning into a starbucks. Hopefully all the bake goods tha we all have memories of, will still be offered when it re-opens again.

that said according to this thread the Bakery is suppose to remain the same but serve that crap strabucks calls coffee (posts #153 & #155)

    http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3019513&page=11

btw- any reason you can't see the results of the poll stuck at the top of the page on the switch to starbucks???

its not just the baked goods; its the whole look and feel of the place...the smells and the atmosphere....if its truly going to be changed to a starbucks versus remaining the same but sponsored by starbucks, its going from something uniquely Disney to a not so special something you only need to walk down the street to buy....

I really wish it would be one of those locations where MSB "Proudly Serves Starbucks Coffee," but their original menu stays the same. Better coffee, but with the unique authenticity of what guests know and love about MSB.

My school's coffee shop does that - they use all the coffee and teas that Starbucks does, but they make their own baked goods, sandwiches, etc. on site. None of the standard Starbucks fare.

I've been to the Starbucks location in DCA, and while others have mentioned that it does a good job blending in, there's no question that it's a Starbucks! Not to mention that it's not in Disneyland - DCA seems to be a little all over the place in terms of theming anyways (IMO), so it's not as hard making it work as it is on Main Street. As others have suggested, this would be much more appropriate in DHS, or even a less central, traditional location in MK.

Regardless of what's true\not...I'd prefer to see Main Street remain non-commercial simply b\c it would ruin the intent of Main Street where it emulates Walt's childhood. I understand and condone corporate sponsorship (think of GM and test Track or Kodak and Figment) but it's not appropriate on Main Street.

what do you mean "remain"? main street is nowhere close to non-commercial. and, in fact, when it looked the way walt originally designed, the corporate sponsorship ON MAIN STREET was even more prominent than it is now.

I'm going to be in WDW from January 14-18 and I just wanted to know if it's going to be closed by that time, or if it's closing toward the end of January? I'm going to dearly miss their ham egg and cheese croissants! YUM. I could eat like five of those.

Exactly what I was going to say. When Disneyland first opened (completely under Walt's direction) the stores/restaurants on Main Street were not operated by Disney, they were leased to independent vendors. Price wars between businesses sprung up and Walt didn't like it so he stopped renewing leases.

I think a lot of people use "Walt wouldn't like this" far too freely. I doubt he would have a problem with this switch. I also doubt that Disney will do anything to ruin the theming of the Main Street Bakery. DCA's Starbucks/bakery was very well handled and I expect nothing less from this transition. Perhaps we should just wait and see what really happens before getting so worked up about possibilities that may never come to pass.

Does anyone know if they are still going to be pumping in the delicious smells of fresh baked goodies down main street?

When I worked there, they would actually use smells of fresh baked goods and pump it down main street to entice people to buy and give it that real old world feel.

I wonder if they are still going to do that with the bakery closed?

I love the idea and feel of the Main Street Bakery so if they keep the feel of it, I'm okay with it. If they turn it into a usual Starbucks you find in any city, I won't be too happy. I will say that Disney needed some good coffee though- NesCafe was less than stellar! :rotfl2:
