Is Disneyland safe??

Im planning on going over Thanksgiving and a few people have brought up the fact that there is a heightened world wide terrorist threat and people are being warned to stay away from places where there are large crowds. Has anyone else ever thought about Disneyland being a target? Its a really scary thought! I know they have security all over but they don't even have metal detectors and just glancing in peoples bags doesn't really cut it. What are your opinions???

I think anywhere could be a target. Malls, bus stations, train stations cinemas... it's a risk we have to take but the chance of something happening are much lower than for example a car crash.

Personally I think somewhere that is at least making an effort at security like DL is probably lower risk as it would be easier to attack somewhere that isn't.

You can't plan your way around random acts of violence.

Just do what you planned to do. Have fun. Or the terrorists will have won without doing a thing.
I agree. We were there when Paris happened, and there was not one point that I didn't feel safe on Disney property. They have tons of unseen security throughout the property. Go, have fun, try not to worry about it.

I would be more worried if you were traveling to Washington DC or actual American landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty but as others have said above you really can't throw off a trip simply because of a very unlikely terrorist attack.

Also in the last thread someone mentioned that they would be more likely to (heaven forbid) attack disneyworld if they were to attack a theme park... It's much bigger... But you never really know. And also again like someone mentioned it would most likely be safer in the parks behind security check points then outside.

We were just at DL on the 17th and 18th and we did see more security people in the park (like in groups of 2-3 in one place and in different areas of the park) and a bigger police presence out at bag check and the esplanade.

Honestly, we just had a domestic act of terror with the Planned Parenthood shooter in Colorado. I think a lot of people forget that right now, the bigger risk is domestic terrorism, which tends to happen anywhere, but more often at not so touristy places. As for the safety of Disneyland, sure, I think about it. It would make a great target. But, so would the big city I live a few miles away from. So would the Golden Gate Bridge, the Seattle Space Needle, and and number of other landmarks. In considering the possibilities and probabilities, especially given the excellence of Disney's security measures, I would not let it dictate whether or not I go. That could change as the climate of the world changes, but for now, I feel it's safe.

Statistically, you're much more likely to commit suicide than be killed by a terrorist. So be more scared of yourself :) I'm going to liberally paraphrase from a friend of mine who works in international relations for both gov security agencies and private firms, and has been living in warzones for the last 15 years. The risk of an American being killed in a terrorist attack at home or abroad is about 1:20,000,000 (Washington Post, April 16, 2013.) The risk of dying in a plane crash is 4x that. So if someone is worried about a terrorist attack, it's definitely not based on the math. Sure, it could happen, but statistically, it's not likely.

Go and enjoy yourself. As stated, Disney has a lot of hidden security. Be aware of your surroundings and greet people in line and talk to them. You don't have to be scared, just a heightened sense of what and who is around you.

The other option is to stay inside your home. Crowds are everywhere. Live your life and, as a previous poster suggested, be cognizant of your surroundings.

It's funny, but Disneyland is probably the one place that I feel safest at in the whole world lol.

I figure I have more chance of being stabbed or beat up by a deranged customer at the supermarket that I work at here in Australia. Or my house being broken into and being hurt in the process.

When I visited the US back in September this year, I was more worried about an earthquake or rock slide as we drove up to Big Bear ( really should have saved watching San Andreas for the plane ride home and not the way there :scared: ).

I must admit though, Terrorism is something I am starting to grow concerned about. My DD15 is supposed to being flying to Malaysia to play in a Netball competition next year. At first I was so pumped for her to go. And then I went and read the paper yesterday and our Counter Terrorist specialist believes there is a possibility than an Australian plane will blown up in a similar fashion to the Russian plane over Egypt, and that it will happen enroute from Indonesia or Malaysia. I don't want her to go.

I'd have no hesitation in flying back to Disneyland though :)

Wait until they start driving and then your fears about their safety will be completely justified and warranted.

Lol I have 12 weeks and 6 days until I need to worry about her being behind the wheel. I am not looking forward to it that's for sure!
