Great advice--especially about not jaywalking! Watch the cars turning, they aren't always carefully watching for pedestrians...even when the pedestrian has the right of way.
Yes, DITTO on the jaywalking tip.
Is NV a state where pedestians have right of way? MA is one of those states. I wish they would have BIG signs up as you cross the border into MA.
In NY, we loosely have that rule when at a traffic light, and you
must let the pedestrian go first.
In MA, apperantly ANY time a pedestrian is standing at a curb and wants to cross the street, even against the light, the cars MUST stop for them. I've actually seen TWO TON cars, in moderately flowing traffic, abruptly stopping in the middle of an extremely busy street, (not at an intersection,) to let an 120lb. person cross. You can't imagine how many near fatal, rear end pile up collisions almost happen because of the first car abruptly stopping, for seemingly no apparent reason.
PLUS, the
other side of the street has to stop traffic too, in order for this person to cross.
I can't believe a law that favors abruptly stopping multiple, two TON cars, in favor of a 120lb. person.
I'm not from MA. I'm not used to the signs on posted on cones saying I MUST stop at ALL times for all pedestians at the crosswalk (even if they don't have the light.) It took me several times before I realized and then remembered to jam on my breaks (in already flowing traffic,) to stop in time, and hope I don't get rear ended by another non-MA resident, for a person wanting to cross, instead of him waiting for the light. I'm surprised I haven't killed someone already who automatically expected me to stop, and they just went ahead and started walking.
Stupid, stupid law.
If traffic is already flowing, the law should err on the safety of the people IN the cars, not the pedestrians at the side of the roads. Moving cars become projectile weapons. To abruptly stop a two TON car for a 120lb. person is ridiculous.
