Do NOT step on any animals, please! A May 2012 TR. NEW! 6/25

Subbing as well! popcorn:: We are taking our first trip to Disney in December:cheer2: - looking forward to learning tips and tricks from your report!:teacher:

I hope I can help!!

I'm here!

Coming from our FB page to read! Yay for short random trips!

Thank you both for stopping by and reading!

Hi Joyce! :wave2: I didn't know you'd started, but I'm here now! Can't wait to hear all about the trip. I can't remember, was this your first stay at OKW?

You are just in time.. we'll be getting to WDW coming right up. Ben and I stayed at OKW for one night on our trip last year... but we were only there for a total of a couple hours!

following along

Welcome!

Joining in!:thumbsup2 This sounds like it's gonna be fun popcorn::

I hope it is!

The alarm went off at 3:30, and it took me just a split second to figure out where I was and why I was waking up in the middle of the night. Once I did, though, I was quickly bounding off the couch and running to get ready. We needed to leave by 4, since it’s an hour and a half drive from Mark’s to Bradley airport in Hartford.

Nothing strange happened, and we were out the door right on time. Because I am a genius, I decided to wear shorts instead of having to change once in Florida. That meant I was freezing as we headed out, and I was anxiously waiting for the car to heat up. Note to self: changing into shorts once you get there is not that big a deal!

Mark had some pretty rocking tunes blaring on his iPod, so we pretty much sang our way to Hartford. We made it by 5:15 and laziness won out over frugality as we parked in the garage and sauntered over to the terminal. There were exactly zero people in line to check bags, and since we had done Early Bird check-in with Southwest, we got amazing boarding numbers; A18 and A19. Score! Security wasn’t too bad, and we joked about the poor TSA agent having to repeat “No belts, no watches” over and over. So I found it hysterical that the girl in front of me went through the scanner only to be pulled aside and asked if she was wearing a belt. “Yeah”, she answered as though there couldn’t possibly be a reason why she shouldn’t be. Then she got to have a nice pat down. Luckily, they let me through around her, so Mark and I were soon back in our shoes and on our way.

We had a little time before boarding, and decided Ben should check out the gate area.

IMG_7306.jpg

For some reason, it never occurred to us to eat anything… a mistake that we will not be making again. As we lined up to begin boarding, we happily realized there was only one other group ahead of us. We were almost the first people on the plane! So we grabbed the first row, making it easy to jump off when we landed after a nicely uneventful flight. Though I was very disturbed while reading Skymall, because I ran across this.

I hate mushrooms… in fact; you might say that I have a mushroom phobia. This disgusting grow-your-own-mushroom kit would be a personal sort of torture for me. It still haunts me. Ugh.

But other than that… the flight was fine. Before long, we were on the monorail tram thing and zooming right along.

IMG_7307.jpg

I was so excited to approach the Magical Express boarding! As we got close a CM asked if we were going to Disney World… then he asked if we were going to the Magic Kingdom. “Yes, later this evening” I replied. He then escorted us over to a couple of CMs who explained that they were testing a new Fastpass system and had me pick 4 rides off a list they gave me. They tried to give me set FP times for these rides, but I explained again that we weren’t heading to the park till later that night for EMH. They gave me this card, anyway:

IMG_20120513_203529.jpg

And just said that I don’t have to use it if the times don’t work out. Basically, this card had time slots for us to ride Space Mountain, Buzz, Jungle Cruise, and Splash Mountain. I got an email pretty much immediately with my times listed. And we wouldn’t be in the park for any of them. Oh well. It was neat to almost be part of testing something new!

We had to wait for kind of a while, but eventually got on a bus. I got the worst picture ever of the welcome sign:

IMG_7309.jpg

We stopped at POFQ first, and then made it to OKW. We were so excited to finally be there! We were also hungry. Very, very hungry. But we figured we’d check-in before finding something to eat, so we hopped in line.

IMG_7311.jpg

The blue shorts lady on the left was part of a group that was severely gumming up the works (something that would become known as a ‘Code Gumdrop’ throughout the trip). They had a manager going over their room bill and it sounded like they were trying to get all of their money back. I have no idea why they were doing this, but it was taking FOREVER, and there were only two other CMs checking people in. So we waited and waited until we were called over. THEN we waited even longer while our CM called someone and was on hold for a year. She finally told us that she was trying to find us a room that was ready, and we quickly told her not to worry- we were starving to death and were just going out to a park anyway so we didn’t care.
By now, it was close to 10:30 and we needed to eat. So we quickly gathered up our stuff, and ran across the way to Olivia’s. The very friendly staff there had us seated quickly and we started to calm down. Until Mark noticed that my room key had someone else’s name on it! So I ran back over to registration where I found a manager and another woman who looked a bit frantic- she had my card! So we were able to quickly sort that out, and I went back to order my breakfast.

It was only at this point that I noticed the restaurant was no longer seating anyone, as they close at 10:30 to switch over to lunch. I couldn’t believe how close we had come to missing out on a meal!
Now we were well and truly relaxed, though as our awesome server brought over two delicious bloody mary’s.

IMG_7313.jpg

We both ordered the eggs benedict and it was amazing! All around, very yummy. When it was time to pay, Mark used his TIW card, and we asked her to split the bill between our two credit cards. This wasn’t a problem at all, and we ended up tipping a little extra because she did such a good job and was so friendly.
Now we were finally ready to consider heading out to a park…

Ok, there is no such thing as a "bad" picture of the Welcome sign. As long as you can see it, nothing else matters.

You getting up at 3:30am just reminded me to think about what time I should get up for our travel day in October! More than likely it'll be around 4:30am, our flight takes off at 8:00am. I'm usually not an early bird, but when I know I'm going to Disney World, I pop out of bed with no problems! :rotfl2:

Regarding Magical Express: From the time you showed up at the kiosk, how long was it until you reached your resort? I'm still on the fence about whether we should go this route, or get a town car....

Can't wait to read more! popcorn::

I'm joining in! I can't wait to hear all about your trip. I've heard it can be very frustrating going on trips with other people, especially if your touring plans are quite different. I hope everything went well and you still had an enjoyable trip!

hi joyce! followed your link from StringBean's TR and popping in to say hello!

Our Oct. flight leaves at 6:something, and it's closer to 6am than 7am. I'll probably go to bed at something like 8pm and get up at around 3am.

I noticed the TSA people in Hartford were repeating "no belts, no watches" over and over too! I was terrified that I would get picked to go in one of those scanners (I have some irrational fear of them :confused3) but luckily they just waved me through the metal detector! :cool1:

Ew, I hate mushrooms! Brandon is obsessed with them! Ugh!

So jealous you were picked to test the new FP's even if you didn't use it! I was hoping I'd get picked, but we don't use ME, so I guess our chances were pretty slim. I'm not sure how I feel about them anyway, I already hate having to schedule ADR's in advance, not sure I want to schedule what attractions I want to do at what time in advance!

I love that you guys started your trip with a drink! That's how I envisioned mine starting, but with it being SO hot, I didn't really want to dehydrate myself so I skipped the alcohol that day. Lame. :bitelip:

I always wear shorts in completely inappropriate weather on the way to Disney . I know it wouldn't make a big deal, but those 5 seconds changing pants seems like a huge hassle once there!

Glad to hear you had a good meal at Olivia's! I've never eaten there, but I've always been intrigued by their breakfast menu!

Disney is the ONLY thing I am happy to get up early for!

I'd say it took us 40 minutes total from getting in line at ME to being in line at OKW. I've done a town car before, and really liked it. But ME works for me, and is part of the WDW experience now.

mark and I have been to WDW before, and I knew some of the challenges I'd be up against. I wasn't quite prepared for his level of commando-style touring! We did manage to compromise for the most part and had a great time!

hi joyce! followed your link from StringBean's TR and popping in to say hello!

Thanks for coming over!

Caught up on your TR :)

Thanks for reading!!

followed you over from FB. cant wait to hear about may. we loved it last year!

Flower and Garden Festival was beautiful- we really enjoyed being there in May, though it was pretty toasty warm!

bravo and wine? my perfect perfect day :)

::yes:: yup, pretty much!

I noticed the TSA people in Hartford were repeating "no belts, no watches" over and over too! I was terrified that I would get picked to go in one of those scanners (I have some irrational fear of them :confused3) but luckily they just waved me through the metal detector! :cool1:

Haha, I guess 'No Watches, No Belts' is Hartford's motto! I had to go through the scanner, but it wasn't a big deal. But then again, I wasn't wearing a belt!

At first I was excited to be picked for the new FP thing, then annoyed that we couldn't use it. But everything worked out just fine at the MK without it.

I probably should have been responsible like you and worried more about staying hydrated... but I did order a water along with my bloody mary, so that makes it ok, right? :rotfl:

I always wear shorts in completely inappropriate weather on the way to Disney . I know it wouldn't make a big deal, but those 5 seconds changing pants seems like a huge hassle once there!

At the time, stopping to change just seemed like too much of a delay! Mark ended up changing in the ME bathroom while we were waiting for everyone to board, which I found hysterical!

Olivia's was awesome! The eggs benedict and the banana bread fench toast I had later. Loved it!!

Sunday May 6, cont.

We finished up breakfast, but I still had quite a bit of my drink left. Our wonderful server offered me a to-go cup. My eyes pretty much lit up when I said yes. She warned me not to leave the resort with it, and I promised to be good.
Mark and I took this chance to check out the pool area a little, and just soak up some of the OKW atmosphere. It really has a great vibe! After wandering around a few minutes, we made our way to bell services and left our carry-on bags with the. Next, we sat at the bus stop and waited for an Animal Kingdom bus to arrive. I asked Mark to show me how he felt:

IMG_7315-1.jpg

The bus ended up showing up pretty quickly, so I had to down the rest of my drink fast. No harm done, I assure you!
Here’s Mark displaying the first bus of our trip.

IMG_7317.jpg

Mark took a picture of me on the bus, and a guy sitting near us asked if we wanted him to take a picture of the two of us. ‘No!’ Mark pretty much shouted and the family with the guy all looked a little puzzled. I piped up: ‘He means no thank you’. And we all chuckled a little. It was a decidedly awkward moment.
I didn’t have long to dwell on it, though, because Mark and I realized that I had made a pretty big mistake. I was planning on buying an annual pass when we got to the Animal Kingdom. DVC members get a sizable discount… but not without proof that they are DVC members. And that is usually in the form of the membership card. Which was sitting nice and safe at my house. I tried calling Ben to see if he could read me the number off the card, but he wasn’t home. So now I am sitting on the bus feeling awkward about Mark barking at the stranger, and also super worried about how I am going to get into the parks all week. Mark insisted that it would be fine, but I couldn’t help worrying…

Once we made it to the park, I walked up to the guest relations window and explained what I was trying to do. The CM said she’d try calling DVC member services, but if they wouldn’t give her the number we were out of luck. So she called, and they put her on hold a couple of times. They finally gave her my member number, and she was able to process the transaction. Phew! Great work by the CM, there. Though, thinking back on it, I was begging them to let me give them money- Disney would have to be pretty dumb to not let me give them $400! As a side note, Ben texted about 27 times while this was happening because he called member services and was told that our only option was to go to Saratoga Springs to get a replacement card. So glad we didn't listen to this!

Shiny new pass in hand, we finally walked into a park! It was probably a bit before noon at this time, so we headed to Kilimanjaro Safaris for FP. Then we rode Everest using the single rider line (love this- we skipped a 35 minute wait!)
IMG_7318.jpg

Mark managed to photo bomb this self portrait of us!
IMG_7319.jpg

Next up, we headed to one of our favorites: Dinosaur! I had been quoting rides earlier, trying to get Mark to guess and one of the ones that stumped him was ‘They’re not gonna make it, they’re not gonna make it!’ He was happy to have finally solved that one on this ride.

IMG_7321.jpg

IMG_7322.jpg

Our FP time was juuuuust about ready, so we stopped at Everest as we made our way to the safari to grab a couple for later. But not before I got a pomegranate margarita.

IMG_7323.jpg

I ended up at the FP machine 3 minutes early, so I waited with my drink and Mark went off to find an ice cream. Once the FP were in hand, we headed off on a safari adventure! I had gotten pretty sick of this ride, but we had a great guide and since they’ve changed the poacher storyline, it was pretty enjoyable. At one point, a white rhino was so close that we literally could have touched him!

IMG_7324.jpg

I kept noticing different views around the park, and wanted to stop to enjoy them. But Mark was still on a mission, and had us trucking pretty quickly to It’s Tough to Be a Bug. As we waited, I started to take a picture of Mark when a CM walked by. Mark mention that he wanted a picture with that guy. ‘That guy’ came over and asked if we wanted a picture together. I told him no, but that Mark wanted a picture with him. So he shrugged and I got this:
IMG_7326.jpg

Love it!
We were getting pretty tired and hungry, so we decided to use our Everest FPs and then head out to the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Our Boma reservation was for 4:45, and it was probably only a little after 3 when we left the park. We were both pretty excited with our park touring awesomeness!

You may have noticed... this was a really long, jam packed day. It is still going...

The END of Day 1! "Code Lifeguard"

Enjoying!! So, why won't you two get a pic together? Besides a quick self portrait?

Question - how was the FP enforcement? I am not looking forward to actually having to be at the ride within the FP time, but maybe it wasn't that big of a deal?

Love SR lines!! We always take advantage of those, too. And love Dinosaur - def one of my favorite rides (though Indy is soooooo much better!).

OMG that mushroom thing looks so awesome! LOL. But, I love mushrooms... :goodvibes

It's funny how your park touring styles have changed so much, it's gotta be hard doing that with a friend. At least, when I go with my DH, I'm not really trying to be nice and polite and all that when we disagree about what to do, and generally he just follows my lead. Every time I visit WDW I think about going with friends or family and I always just think it'd be so hard to do it, uness it's just a quick trip or part of a trip and I know that I will have it "my" way for the rest!! Or like you, having another trip coming up in just a couple months.

Anyway, looking forward to more!! :yay:

Subbing and enjoying it so far! :)

I have no idea why Mark didn't want pictures together... we have plenty from our past trips. I could see how it would seem a little awkward to others, cause he's a guy and I'm a girl and it was just the two of us, without my DH. But, let's just say... that's not remotely an issue with Mark.

YES! That is exactly the difference: "At least, when I go with my DH, I'm not really trying to be nice and polite and all that when we disagree about what to do, and generally he just follows my lead."
I couldn't put my finger on it, but you got it... DH and I have a routine and we know each other so well that neither of us worry about what the other wants to do right then. We figure it out. Trying to be polite and fair about who chose what to do next was tough!

I think our trip in October will be better because we are traveling with another couple- we can always split up when we want to do different things.

There were signs on every FP machine reminding you to come back during your hour. I never saw anyone trying after their window, and we didn't either, so I don't know if any CMs would have let us. It was hard to get used to- I had always taken advantage of being able to be late to my FPs!

I don't think I could've done so much on an arrival day. Everest is fun, but combined with the Safari, Dinosaur, and alcohol, I'd be done...:rotfl2:

Interested to see how your Boma dinner went! It might sound crazy, but I think it's cool that you visited AK, then ate at the AK Lodge...keeping the same theme throughout the day. :confused3
