Designated Survivor

Liked it; never watched 24 partly due to the 'cult' like following in the office where I worked for 4 years. The day before and day of was filled with exaggerated enthusiasm and the day after every new show was a dissection for 45 minutes!

I'm wondering how the various sub-plots will play out!

I wasn't a fan of the whole cult like following of the show either, which is why I never watched it before. But a couple years ago I got bored and decided to buy some old DVDs on Ebay. I was immediately hooked. I loved binge watching it. Every episode is over the top action packed, which is even more exaggerated when you watch one episode after another.

I enjoyed the show but one thing really bothered me. So after the Capital building was bombed, they move him and his family to the White House and he immediately is taken to the secure room. But then a few minutes later, he is walking around outside of the building alone. If everyone else was killed and he is the only one left to be President, wouldn't they keep him in a more secure (secret) environment until they knew more about the bombing? How do they know the White House isn't the next target?

In season 7 of 24, the White House WAS the second target. Kiefer should know better. ;)

My husband said the same thing. I commented that when they were transporting him to the White House they had all the police lights on. You would think that while there was an attack on the government you wouldn't want to draw attention to a potentially important person shown with motorcycle escorts and two SUVs lights and sirens blarring.

We did as a whole like it and decided to Series record it. I know my husband was really excited for it. Neither one of us have watched 24 but we had watched Stalker and so we were glad that we saw Maggie Q (and I had liked her on Nikita).

I was happy to see her show up as well. I liked her in Stalker.

We watched it last night and I am hooked. I never watched 24 so I have that going for me.
I was more disappointed with "The Good Place".

I liked it. I will continue to watch. When he was being kind of wimpy I kept saying he needs to channel his inner Jack Bauer! (huge 24 fan)

I liked it well enough too, but the first episode is the same plot as Executive Orders by Tom Clancy. I keep looking for Jack Ryan.
Okay, so it wasn't just me.

I kept telling my husband, "I swear I've seen this before." And he brought the book out.

I completely agree with you. I didn't care for how unrealistic much of it was. I get the fact that, in television and movies, some things will be altered to fit the story or simply because of budget restraints, but there were so many things that would never, ever happen! And couldn't they have come up with a more original plot line? No, instead they gave us trope after trope. I don't want to post spoilers, so I won't go into details. I'm disappointed because I was hoping to really like this show.

I was looking forward to this show. I haven't seen "24", (I have it on my binge watch list,) but I like Kieffer Sutherland. They had better get over re-using the whole, "He was the housing secretary," thing in a couple episodes, or that will get old fast.

The local news interviewed our Governor, Andrew Cuomo, who had said he was the designated survivor twice when he was a congresssman. He said the stuff they had him read to prepare and how he was briefed beforehand, really was life changing for him. . . Although, his father, the late, Gov. Mario Cuomo, had always been preparing his son to one day possibly be the President, so I don't know if it was that life changing. :upsidedow More, like he got to try out the possibility for real.

Yes, I found that implausible too. After a terrorist attack, the White House would be the LAST place to bring in the last and only person to be President, unless it was to hide out in the bunker underneath. But, they were still finding un-detonated bombs, which meant there could be others.

During 9/11, Bush was flown around for hours in Air Force One, kept mobile and his whereabouts constantly unknown, until they went to the secret bunker - wasn't it in Montana? Not so secret anymore. :ssst:

I like Maggie Q too. I'm more interested in Kal Penn being on the show as Kieffer's speech writer. He actually left being on House, M.D., so he could work for the Bill Clinton Obama administration. (Typo, I have the Clintons on my brain for some reason. ;)) Now, he gets to play at being someone who works with the President, and a critic at that. :upsidedow

Me too. I didn't last 10 minutes, the writing and over acting by Ted Danson & Kristen Bell was so bad. :headache: She'd better stick to those Samsung commercials.

I loved it! Great to see Keifer in a different type of roll. This show to me has lots of possibilities.

I thought it was alright. It didn't wow me, but it held my interest for the most part so I'm willing to give it a few more episodes. I never watched 24.

Big 24 fan here watched every episode every season and was heart broken when it was over. I didn't think I would like this show because to me Keifer would always be Jack Bauer. With that being said I really enjoyed the show and will continue to watch.

I felt the same way. There was so much that mimiced the book.
My favourite book by the way.

I never watched 24. I enjoy these type of shows but I hope that it doesn't end up being another Madame Secretary which I enjoy very much. I too thought it odd that they took him directly to the White House but hey, it's tv.

I could not get past the first 30 minutes. It was just too unrealistic to me. Sutherland was like a deer in the headlights the entire time. He seriously needed to snap out of it and get backbone while he is at it. I might give it a second chance but it has a lot of work to do.

I have finally found someone else who was disappointed in The Good Place. I don't think I laughed once during those first two episodes. I still have Thursday on the DVR so I'll give it a chance.

There are actual two designated survivors - one member of the Cabinet to take over the Presidency, and one member of Congress to start a new Congress. Cuomo was the designated survivor for Clinton's 1999 State of the Union - but he was the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development at the time.

I like Maggie Q too. I'm more interested in Kal Penn being on the show as Kieffer's speech writer. He actually left being on House, M.D., so he could work for the Bill Clinton administration. Now, he gets to play at being someone who works with the President, and a critic at that. :upsidedow
Obama's, not Clinton's. He was only 15 when Clinton took office, and 23 at the end of that administration. The timing doesn't work. House premiered in 2004'

I know it's just fiction/entertainment, but think about being in his position. In the morning, he's asked (told?) to step down from his Cabinet position - job - and twelve hours later he's thrust into the most powerful position in the world.

Speaking of errors, though - the designated survivor wouldn't be anywhere near Washington DC
