Ummm, wont really matter? The final price of the AP will be the same.. if you get a one day tick and pay the difference or something else, the total cost will be the same.. As long as you dont go over of course..
The math was done last year and is in this thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2590540
As the pp said, the official policy has not changed but YMMV. Info on that is in this post:

Two factors actually have to be considered -- which UCT tourist ticket offers the best discount AND is less than the cost of the DVC discounted AP. Disney doesn't offer refunds if the ticket you are "upgrading" to is less expensive than the ticket you're trading in.So I guess the question would be more "which UCT tix give the biggest discount off face value so once you use them and it is supposed to upgrade to the current face value?"
gotcha.. that makes more sense.
I just checked the UCT site and the best bang for the buck as far as a discounted ticket that would be under the DVC AP cost looks to be the six day Park Hopper.
For what it's worth, a few weeks ago we upgraded UCT tickets purchased from before the ticket price increase to DVC AP's with no problems. We went through the turnstiles at the International Gateway at Epcot, went right back out and upgraded. It did take the poor CM awhile and a calculator to get the prices all worked out, but he was spot on (I had the math all done in advance).

So how much does this little trick save per adult ticket??
$23 per adult ticket w/o the mousesavers discount, I'm not sure what the exact numbers are for a child's ticket. We have 2 adult and 2 child APs to purchase so we're looking at around $100 discount for the 4 tickets. The new mousesavers newsletter should come tomorrow so I'll check the ticket prices through their link.
I don't want to buy too early either because if the policy changes for 2012, then we'd be stuck with 6day hoppers that we can't use plus we'd still need to buy APs.
There's a link in the monthly MouseSavers email that takes you to a special page on the Undercover Tourist web site. There is an additional discount of a few bucks available via this link.OK, so are you now talking about an ADDITIONAL discount from MouseSavers on the UCT tickets?? I didn't realize they got a discount at UCT. Our DS is 14 so we need 3 adult tix. That would mean almost $70 for us. That's equal to about 2 CS lunches for us!! I will have to read my MouseSavers email more closely!!
