August No Buy!

Hi, Just joining in today for the first time ever and so I will start today. I love this idea. So do I just count things that are not normal weekly things like groceries or do I just count extra stops at the store over and above weekly shopping and all the extras like eating out? Anyway, I will start small and shoot for 8 days. Thanks!
12- no buy!

Hi! You basically make you own rules. For myself, I don't count groceries, gas and other expenses that I consider normal monthly expenses that I have to spend to live the day to day. I do count days where I had random spending like stopping at Starbucks, buying things at the craft store, buying clothes, eating out...things I could live without if I really wanted to. So you should think about your spending habits and decide what should count or not. :-)

Well another week is gone and here is where I'm at:

I'm back and have to try harder this month! I've decided to limit myself to a budget of $50/week including groceries (not utility bills) because my credit card is out of control and my air conditioning needs to be replaced.

Just found this thread, but I'm doing my best to cut back on pointless spending (anyone else wander around Target for an hour and come out with $45 worth of stuff you didn't need!?) and online shopping (whoops).

So I'll start with last week...
8/13 $25 pedicure (I had set the money aside for it, so I don't feel too bad about it!)
8/14 $2 on a drink at Chipotle (I had 2 free meal cards, so that counts for something right!? ;) )
8/15 $2 on an iced coffee + $3.15 on tolls
8/16 $3.15 on tolls
8/17 $40 on groceries (stuck to budget - yay)
8/18 No buy (I paid the rent, but I feel like that can't count, right!? lol)
8/19 $2 on a drink at Panera while I study (I can't not purchase something while I sit there and use their wifi for 2 hours..), $2.50 on a chalk board marker (wedding craft, but I used a 40% off coupon!), $4 in quarters (laundry), $15 at Target (groceries).

Ok so only one no buy so far.. BUT.. I didn't mindlessly put things into the cart at the grocery store. I didn't get Panera after my study session for dinner like I wanted to (instead I made a yummy dinner with the salmon I thawed this morning), I gave myself a limit at Target and I stuck to it, and I didn't buy anything unnecessary.

I've given myself a strict "personal" spending limit lately and I feel like I'm doing a good job of sticking to it so far.

I completely understand the whole Target thing. I currently have $10 of gift cards to use, but I'm hesitant to go there because I'm afraid of what else I'll buy. I know I can use them online, but I hate paying shipping, and I'll probably still buy extra stuff. :rolleyes1

10/15 Days So Far, I've started using some software that helps keep track of my finances and I noticed that I actually don't overspend nearly as much as I expected, but I'm still trying to cut back on things like eating out.

Sniff, sniff. We're back from our great trip to Disney. So sad to be home, although we missed the kitties and they missed us. (I think.) On the positive financial side, we went with discounted gift cards we bought ahead of time at BJ's (and got BJ's points and credit card points on top of the small discount -- yeah!), and came back having spent just about that much!

Here's my catch up:

I'm going to aim for a whole 6 days.

Aug. 1: away
Aug. 2: away
Aug. 3: clothes for DS, new shorts for me (I'm down to 5 pairs -- not enough for 7 days in Disney!)
Aug. 4: groceries, things for school
Aug. 5: no buy #1
Aug. 6: no buy #2 -- on a roll!
Aug. 7: supplies for a long promised art project (like 8 months ago long promised!)
Aug. 8: fruit (calling it early!)
Aug. 9: trip errands
Aug. 10: no buy #3
Aug. 11: no buy #4
Aug. 12 - Aug. 18: Disney!
Aug. 19: soccer gear for DS
Aug. 20: groceries (maybe if I call it now I'll actually go to the grocery store so we'll have milk and bread! :) )

11/20 55% there! Looks like I won't make the 20 days. I guess I should rethink to 15. :) BUT for unneeded spending, there has been very little.

1- $16.22 for pizza. We did get dinner and lunch out of it the next day for two of us!
2- $140.53 for gas and groceries.
3- no buy!
4- $100 for hay for my horses.
5- no buy!
6- $13 at Target
7- no buy!
8- $75 to get my ring appraised for insurance, $7.14 at the grocery store, and $13.12 for lunch.
9- $26.96 for gas. We also went to a theme park this day. We had bought the tickets on a groupon deal several months ago, so I won't count the price of those here. We spent about $30 on food that day between both us.
10- First day of my new job! I had to pay to park downtown this day, so that was $19. I would have parked in a cheaper lot that was farther away, but it was pouring down rain. I spent $6.50 on lunch out with coworkers, and $12.99 at the grocery store that night.
11- no buy!
12- no buy!
13- no buy!
14- $14.95- audible subscription renewed; $28.32- chinese for dinner; $36.60- gas
15- $98.95- groceries; $19.55- target

18- no buy
19- $13- we had to leave straight from work and drive several hours for a funeral, so we had to get fast food.
20- no buy

10 no buys! woohoo!

Well August was a bust for me. I should have known with school getting ready to start and soccer season kicking off unexpected expenses would hit. I just didn't think they would hit daily. So although I did not meet my goal for August I am pumped for the kids to start school on Aug. 31st and get back into the swing of things. I am looking forward to the Sept thread where I plan to "kick butt".

:thumbsup2 I always find that I spend more in the summer.

I love this! I'm definitely in for September, but I'll start late here if that's okay. I don't really have a goal yet for the 16 days I'm counting, just want to spend as little as possible from my household spending money (which includes groceries). Maybe for September I'll have a more concrete goal in mind.

8/16: $99 groceries

8/18: $0
8/19: $0
8/20: $0
