After reading the post about being robbed at Disney..

They do have to do testing, but honestly it is real easy to get past it. Plus, they don't have to do it all the time... people can change, for the good and the bad.

It comes down to this... Disney property isn't locked down and, even if they screen every person who comes in, people will still get by. That is how you get clean background checks on people who HAVE committed crimes... they just were never caught before. You have to take personal responsibility for your self.

Computers come to mind.

Every day someone figures out a way to outsmart the hackers and every day they come up with something new.

I agree, you cannot prevent EVERYTHING in life, but you can be diligent in being aware and protect yourself from what could possibly occur.

Unfortunately, many think it is everyone else's responsibility but their own.

It should also be noted that this thread title is also misleading, just like the original thread. They weren't "robbed", there was a "theft" of items - that were quite frankly left unattended.

... (although most drunk driving convictions are felonies, and many drunk drivers are murderers which I find just as horrendous a crime as a rapist-but that is my personal opinion).

I agree with your premise that taking responsibility for your safety and the security of your possessions is important, even while on vacation (IMO, especially on vacation) however, I was curious what you based the claim that most drunk driving convictions are felonies on, noted that you were from NY and looked up your DUI (driving under the influence) laws in NY. I was surprised to see that first and second time DUIs where infractions! Here in CA even 1st time DUIs are @ least misdemeanors (I also looked up Florida, out of curiosity, misdemeanors for first time DUIs there as well.) IME, the vast majority of DUIs are first time offenders not involving injury or death and thus not felonies, hence most drunk driving convictions are not felonies. We typically only read about the few involving injury or death (which are usually felonies) or famous people. I'm not defending the crime or trying to debate what DUI sentencing laws should or should not be.

edited to add - here's a source for the numbers in CA http://dmv.ca.gov/about/profile/rd/duistats89_99.htm
2007 felony arrests for DUI 6264, misdemeanor arrests for DUI 197,602.

Agreed. Houses cannot be robbed, cars cannot be robbed, an object cannot be robbed, only people can be robbed and to be robbed their property must be taken from their person through force or fear, etc.. To tie in with the above quote, a robbery is almost always a serious felony. A theft usually is not, in my state it can be an infraction, misdemeanor or, depending on the value of the items stolen and prior theft convictions, a low level felony.

Get a job in the DA's office, you would be SHOCKED at how common it is..literally every day. Mostly drinking and driving, drug crimes and domestic violence but yes, nearly every day. I am also in NYC area so large population of law enforcement related population work and live in my area.
Thanks for the insight...really, where to all the Law & Order shows get their stories from?! I am sure working in the DA's office is no picnic:scared1:

While I cannot speak for everyone here....I do like to feel I am in the "Disney Bubble" while there....KNOWING there are bad people in this world...and they may visit Mickey...hoping to take advantage of innocent vacationers.
Bad people are going to do bad things...I think its just a matter how easy we make it for them with our belongings at Disney.
Again, I still feel badly for the OP from the other thread:flower3:

I would be suspicious of anyone who would steal someone's place before a parade. He/she would be capable of anything. Sticky feet......sticky fingers.

Hey..not so fast....DD14 and I were once yelled at, yes , yelled at by a family, for stealing their spot for the Electrical parade back in 07:scared1:
His words were.."You think we are going to stay here all day in OUR spot and you are going to come along and steal it from us"..to that affect,,,but he did say steal...:lmao: All we did was try to squeeze in and DD was 10 at the time and inadvertintly blocked one of their kids..
So lock me up and throw away the key:laughing:

" Squeezing" in is just as bad . Sorry . You tried to get into personal space . Many folks do not appreciate that . Just saying ......:cool2:

My post was half in jest....were you there, did you witness my version of "squeezing"..? Do not tell me I was getting into someone's personal space...really...:rolleyes1 Just saying.....

" Squeezing " was a poor choice of words then . I have seen people trying to " squeeze " into a place where others are . It is not nice . Period . So you must not have been squeezing in . So these people got angry because you stood or sat in an open spot ? Interesting . Just taking your word for it . You should have reported the incident since they were out of line . If people had manners , there would not be this kind of predicament . They should have been reported to a cast member . I would call that abusive . yelling is not needed . Especially at inocent by standers .:)

I have to say when I was staying at the Pop a couple weeks ago I saw alot of shady people. Maybe because it's a value I don't know. I'm seriously rethinking my stay there.

Love the name Tomader !!:worship: And sadly , this is becoming more of a problem .

Orlando nor Disney are going to advertise their crime issues and frequencies. It is the enemy of tourist destinations. Disney is well aware of the issue as they have been the victim of an array of crimes each year. One that comes to mind to illustrate how bold they can be are the series of thefts at their resort stores. The individual did this over a period of time where he took the entire cash register while the store was open by placing it in a black trash bag.

We were just at AKV Kidani Village and before we left I had read hear about the menus being put under doors and it not being allowed. On our 2nd day there we came back to our room one night to a menu that was slipped under our door. The next day we brought the menu to the front desk to tell them about it. We were told it is a problem and it is not allowed. When DH asked why haven't these people been caught the front desk person answered, and I'll quote "because our security guards are old and when the guys get caught they run and the security guards can't catch them." :confused3 We were also told that most of the menus are from non existing restaurants and they want you to call and order and will take your credit card # over the phone then never deliver anything.

I am sorry but the visual of that is funny, :rotfl2:

I know and I agree :rotfl: DH and I did have a good laugh about that but then were a bit worried about the security at the resort. Could you imagine if something serious happened? If they can't catch a couple people putting out flyers how on earth would they handle something serious?

OK, let's lay this to rest.

First, I don't know of any state in which a DUI is a felony. None.

Secondly, I really don't consider that Judge, Cop, Lawyer or Construction Worker who stopped after work and had two drinks and ended up with a DUI to be a hardened criminal. And no, I don't condone driving drunk. But two drinks? Really?

In regards to your interest in my comments and my choice of words....popcorn::....the rest of my experience is as follows:
The aforemnetioned Disney guests who in my opinion were rude to myself and DD10 at the time was witnessed by other Disney guests and a CM...other guests made comments to him..and the wonderful CM came over to say Happy Birthday to my DD (wearing her button) and asked if we would like to view the parade somewhere else...:goodvibes He escorted us to a different area that was far better than where we were, and we enjoyed the parade.
Sadly, there are Disney guests on property who arrive without manners.
See ya around the boards hollywoodpc:darth:

I honestly cannot believe that this thread has become a debate as to whether or not a DWI is a felony or misdemeanor and whether or not that person is a hardened criminal. :confused3 Although a first offense may be classified as a misdemeanor (although there are circumstances in NYS that would make it a felony) the person still faces up to a year in jail. Second offenses and on would make them felony charges, In my book someone who spends a year in jail is a criminal :confused3.

The entire point of all of my posts has been that a wide variety of people are able to visit WDW and not all of them are upstanding citizens.

And YOU may not consider the judge, cop, lawyer or construction worker who ends up with a DWI a hardened criminal, but others may, especially if one of those judges, lawyers, cops or construction workers causes an accident that injures or kills someone close to you.

I was walking toward my CSR room this past Dec and noticed a couple of pizza guys slipping the flyers under the door next to mine. As they turned to look at me, I made the comment, "You know you're not supposed to be doing that don't you". They got a panicked look on their faces, said, "No I didn't know that" and started walking off. I opened my phone to call my husband at home and one of the guys looked back and yelled 'don't report us, we're leaving' and both took off running. I hadn't even thought about reporting them. I was just making a call home.:rotfl: After the incident though, I did go to guest services and report the incident. The CM said they come in daily but they just can't seem to catch them and they'll run if they see a CM. He also said to never order anything from one of those flyers as some are fake and all they want is your credit card number.
