>> Refillable Mug FAQ <<

So, it is your guess that they don't have the handles because of the cost. Rather then they are maybe going to Freestyle Machines, and not having handles is a better option. Or that many people asked for no handles.

My point is, no one knows, at this time, why they did it.

I don't understand why going to the Freestyle machines would make Disney go to mugs with no handles. The "resting" area for a cup/mug at a Freestyle machine is much bigger than it is at the current soda stations at Disney. It's a challenge to have 2 mugs next to each other at the current stations -- you have to make sure the handle is facing outward and not sideways. There's really only enough space for 2 people to be standing on one side of the soda machine at a time and even that feels like an invasion of my personal space some times. The Freestyle machines would (for me) be so much nicer because there would be one defined space for you to fill your drink -- no pushy guest trying to squeeze their mug in between two others to hurry up and get their fill.

That's true, but I also read that you cannot bring your old mug and refill it because you'll need to swipe your mug before you can refill it. So they do save money. Because if you could bring your old mug everyone would do it but because they have a sensor that means they make you and me pay $20 for an extra mug just for that trip.

If you have a Rapid Fill mug (the ones with the sensor), you can take it back to Disney on a future trip and have them reactivate it for the same price as buying a new mug. Though I've heard mixed results with this -- some people say they've been able to do it, others say they were told it's not allowed. Until I read about 100% success with that, I'm not dragging 5 o 6 mugs back to Disney only to find out I *can't* reactivate them and now I have to lug 10 or 12 mugs back home with me. We have 40+ mugs from our trips. My husband is the only one who really uses his once we get home. Whenever we have out-of-town guests, I give them a Disney mug full of hot coffee on the morning of the drive home. Unfortunately, we buy them faster than I can give them away. :D

I'm a member of the FB Group (Disney Foodies) that showed the pictures of the new mugs (the ones that the PP shared here). Someone in that group posted yesterday that only the green and purple mugs have no handles. The red and blue still have handles. At this point there's no way to know if that's just the current inventory and once those red & blue mugs are sold out if they will be restocked with handles or no handles. Time will tell.

Random thought: maybe Disney's going to start marketing mug holders, for those who want/need the handles. (Comes in Blue, green, Black, yellow and pink. A steal at only 8.99 each! Snap-on decorations planned to be available for additional charge.) Sounds outrageous right? And yet, sounds exactly like something they'd do.

question about the mugs...do you recommend taking them empty into the parks then using them for water ? I can see filling them at water fountains throughout the day.

Any place that sells soft drinks will give you a free ice water. They usually have them already made, so no need to stand in line to order. Just walk up to the counter and ask.

I think the iced tea will still be the same, since it isn't dispensed with the sodas. My daughter likes tea, and I do too (not sweet kind though).

I said the same thing the day this news came out -- I'm guessing if Disney switches to only offering mugs with no handles, they will then start selling a snap-on handle or some type of carrier. Right now it looks like they will have both types of mugs available.

Does anyone know what resort has the new mugs out? We've been here a week looking for purple & green but there's only red/blue to be found everywhere we checked...

The mugs in the pictures I've seen were from Saratoga Springs.

I found the following information on an article dated within the last six months:

"If you are not on the Disney Dining plan you can still purchase a mug, but it will cost $17.99 for each mug. If you do not want to activate the mug for your entire stay, you do have the option to activate it for only one day ($8.99), two days ($11.99) or three days ($14.99) of your stay. The mug is yours once you purchase it, but if you want to save a few dollars or you only want it as a souvenir, then this is a great way to go. Please note that these plans are for consecutive days of use."

We are staying two nights, but I was considering purchasing one of these for my husband as it appears that fountain drinks cost between $3.29-$3.69.

From the first post on this thread, I was under the impression that the basically $20 after tax mug got you refills for up to 14 days. From the above, it seems like you have to either purchase additional activation of the mug or else you are only charged for the length of use. Which is correct? I am so confused now.

We'll be on property half a day, one park a day, and then about half a day before leaving. How much of an investment am I looking at after taxes? I could see him using it at least four-five times, maybe more. I also couldn't find anything on the official Disney website. Any recent visitors who can clear this up? We'll be staying at the Port Orleans Riverside resort if that helps at all. Thanks!

I think the cost has been revised. I don't think you can buy it for fewer days any more. It's a flat fee of $17.99 or thereabouts. It's one price.

That's definitely outdated information. When we were there last month the only option is the $17.99 for 14 days. They stopped offering the shorter options quite some time ago. In fact, I thought it was down to the flat rate for 14 days when we were there in June 2015.

You do still have the option to just buy a disposable cup at each meal (or whenever you want a drink). That's a flat rate (around $3) and you can fill it 3 times within an hour (or a similar time frame).

Have the handle-less mugs only been found at Saratoga so far? I'm going in 45 days to CBR and hoping for mugs with handles.
