Anyone concerned about the "mosquito" talk?

I was worried not for me since I am 47 and most likely not having anymore children but you never know I am more worried for my kids. Everything is paid for between Universal and Disney we would be out over 6 grand if we don't go . So my thought is it's not like Ebola and I looked up the best Mosquito spray and that is OFF Deep Woods Vlll and we will be bringing that on our trip in October. Every time we went i never really got bit while down at Disney but it's better to be safe than sorry.

I am packing OFF deep woods for our trip, it has higher percentage of deet.

The population/abundance of these mosquitos like all mosquitos is greatly impacted by seasonal temperatures and conditions. That said, central and south Florida never really have mosquitos go away like the Midwest and northeast. I was curious about this so I looked it up. The linked study below shows that the prevalence of these Zika carrying mosquitos is super high through October, barely drop in November, then seem to be less but certainly not gone in December-March. Most of the rest of the country, they go away completely during December-March, but not central and south Florida. The risk will be "less" then but never zero. Short of a vaccine, this risk is not going away anytime soon. I don't want to be alarmist, but I doubt this is going to be a one season problem. Mosquitos are impossible to eradicate.

This is really going to hit attendance at Disney and every other theme park and vacation destination, beach, resort in the southeast hard from now until a vaccine or other medicine is developed.

It concerns me and we are not even planning on having any more children.

My only suggestion is to fully educate yourself if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant or are not preventing. Then make an educated choice on what is best for you and what amount of risk given the severity of the potential outcome is acceptable to you and your family. I am certainly not saying to not go, but the risk is not zero and is not going away.

We always have the OFF wipes with us and have found that one wipe shared by two of us offers great protection. We even walked around Celebration at dusk last month and no one in our group was bitten!

I was wondering which is better the wipes or the spray. Which do you prefer?

The wipes as we don't end up inhaling the DEET. We can better concentrate on pulse points, hairline, and any not enclosed area. One time I forgot one triangular open area while wearing Keen's and that's where I was bitten. Ugh, and I'm highly allergic to Florida mosquito bites. We do shower as soon as we get back to the hotel or CM friend's house.

Thank you this is all good to know for when we go.

Heard the news about the mosquitoes in Fla and my heart dropped. We are booked for the first week in October. Hubby and I finally ready to start a family. This is supposed to be the trip where we start trying :(

Current guidance is that you wait to actively start trying 8 weeks after you clear the area with Zika. That should not impact your life plans honestly. Just enjoy your trip and plan on family planning for around Christmas!

IWe have received two warnings from Disney so far recommending that we were pants and long sleeves for the duration of the cruise. Um, yeah, that sounds fun in the Bahamas in September! But I'm sure they have to say it to cover themselves.

Disney should be recommending the use of proper insect repellant, since mosquitos can bite through clothing.

I work in the public health field and do not want to judge but why would any woman who is pregnant risk going to WDW when there are confirmed cases of humans with the zika virus? I know you can take precautions but is it worth the risk of your baby being born with horrific disabilities so you can go to WDW? Yes, Disney does a good job with mosquitos but there is still a chance. This isn't a little virus that will go away in your babies, it's a lifelong debilitating disability.

I don't disagree but now that Zika is confirmed in the US, anywhere these mosquitos live is basically now fair game because of the prevalence of domestic travel. Therefore, one isn't necessarily less likely to get the disease simply by avoiding travel to WDW, which certainly has much, much better mosquito control than my backyard/hometown.

We definitely have concern about zika, but not due to pregnancy. My daughter is immunosuppressed so I worry about her getting bitten and contracting the disease. The chance may be rare, but she did get West Nile Virus in 2002 and that put her in the hospital for 51 days. We have a trip planned for October.

I live in Tampa and get bites almost nighly walking the dogs.

I would be very concerned if anyone in my house was planning to concieve or pregnant. There are other vacation options outside of Florida.

The two recent Florida cases reported in the news were not travel related.

I live in NJ and we have been told it will probably not make it up this far north this year, perhaps next year but by going to Florida (especially if you are pregnant) the chances are higher.

We are still going to go on our trip in Aug, no pregnancies are a definite, no children under 7 years old. I have to be honest, I am a bit concerned about all the pesticides that they will be spraying at the resorts and on Disney property. Pesticides are carcinogens and I worry about my children getting exposed to them. Anyone know how often Disney sprays and how many times per week?
