Running Blind - Week 3
Monday, July 18 - Sunday, July 24, 2016

Monday, July 18 (yoga)

Work-from-home week begins! So glad that I don't have to go downtown this week - at first I was focused purely on the traffic nightmares that were sure to be involved, but with all of the terrible attacks that have been happening lately, I feel WAY safer staying out here in the suburbs this week. :( Glad there doesn't seem to be anything bad happening so far!

As I mentioned last week, I am taking full advantage of this schedule change and am going to go to more yoga classes this week. Today I went to a noon class with one of my favorite teachers. The difference for this one was that it was a regular-temperature yoga class. I haven't been to a class that wasn't classified as "hot" (studio heated to 88-90 degrees) or "warm" (studio heated to low-80s) in at least a year. I'm not sure what the thermostat was set to today but I definitely still got a good sweat going! I felt pretty strong during this class, except for one segment where we had to hold a high lunge for awhile...I sort of convinced myself it was too hard and just came out of it. And this was on my right leg, not my left leg (which still feels a little weak thanks to the sciatica). When we did the left side, I was determined to stay in the pose for the entire time, and I did. The teacher I had today said something a few weeks ago that I think is so true, something like: "The mind is ready to quit before the body." I have totally experienced this in running, yoga, etc. - I convince myself that it’s too hard, that I have to stop or take a break or whatever...I defeat myself even though physically, I can go further. Gotta work on my mental game!

In other news...Mr. A has gone back to school starting today. :( Not to teach, but to take classes of his own (he is working on getting his master's degree in math). It's only a 4-week session - 2 classes - , M-Th, but he's non-stop busy the entire time. It's always a tough time for both of us - he's under a ton of pressure to get his work/studying done, and I feel like I need to stay out of the way so he can focus. We're both looking forward to it being over (just 1 more summer session left after this one)!

Plus, it's hard to work when you get your stuff all set up and someone takes your seat...

And lastly, I posted this in a reply but I'm gonna post it again because I do what I want - this is the back of my Ursula bag from last week, hence the "good vs. evil" aspect. LOVE. They made these bags for Aurora/Maleficent (the most striking one as far as the art is concerned, in my opinion), Snow White/Evil Queen and Cinderella/Lady Tremaine. I just need the Cindy one to complete the set (like I said - been working hard at selling my Dooneys)! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE if they made one of these bags with a Belle/Gaston motif to coincide with the live action "Beauty and the Beast" coming out next year...fingers crossed.

Tuesday, July 19 (45 minutes @ Effort 1)
Easy run today! Except that my hamstrings were SORE from yoga yesterday. Apparently I got my @$$ handed to me without really realizing it. Ouch!

The big event of this run was that I ran with my new phone for the first time. I traded my iPhone 6+ in for an iPhone 6S on Sunday - I got my 6+ in September of 2014 and liked the size until one day when I just...didn't. I debated actually getting the super small (by today's standards) iPhone SE but decided not to go that small just yet.

Anyway, today I ran with my phone in an INKnBURN Zen skirt pocket, which is something I couldn't do with the 6+. Those pockets are sized specifically to fit an iPhone 6/6S - I have to admit that knowing that did factor into my decision to get a smaller phone. It didn’t completely make the decision for me, but it’s definitely something I considered. Once I got the phone in the pocket, it stayed put incredibly well and didn’t bother me at all during the run - I actually reached down a couple of times to check that it was still there because I couldn’t feel it. This is definitely a good safety thing for me to keep carrying my phone, and something I’m looking forward to when running Disney races since I found myself carrying my 6+ in my hand the entire time during those. I’ll be curious to see how it does when I run in shorts on Thursday.

I'm gonna pull a @roxymama and talk about food for a second. :) I had a total dinner fail today when I tried to make this recipe from SkinnyTaste. The sauce was good, but apparently Mr. A and I aren’t drumstick people. I feel like it wouldn’t be as good using chicken breasts though?

I made this one last night though, and it was a winner. Definitely going into the rotation!

Wednesday, July 20 (yoga)
Lunchtime yoga! Good class today...nothing too noteworthy.

Thursday, July 21 (45-minute run @ Effort 1/Effort 3/Effort 1 pace)
UGH. This was a tough one!

We're currently under a heat advisory here (like most of the country, I'm sure). Part of the gloriousness of working from home is that my schedule is way more flexible, but today that was a bad thing - I didn’t actually get started on my run until 10, and by then, it was TOASTY out! I did my 10 minutes at Effort 1 and then turned it up to Effort 3...halfway through I turned around to head back home and passed the high school in our town. They just installed a fancy new electronic board out front that cycles through messages/news/announcements, as well as the current outdoor temperature. When I went by, it said 91! I think if I hadn’t seen that I would have been okay, but instead I was just like, "oh sh*t! 91 degrees!" And I found myself taking a walk break. I did run 1 extra minute at Effort 3, so I still got my 25 Effort 3 minutes in, but it was soooo tough. I walked part of the last 10 minutes and was just spent for the rest of the day. So looking forward to fall running!

The good news - I ran in my INKnBURN Wings shorts with my phone in my pocket and it didn't bug me at all! :thumbsup2 Really happy with the phone switch-up so far. :)

More good news - today is the last day of the RNC! #ByeFelicia (for the record - I would be just as happy to see everyone go if it was the DNC happening here and not the RNC...I'm just happy that there was no violence and that the roads are going to get back to normal!).

Friday, July 22 (60-minute run @ Effort 1)
Another toasty run today! :crazy2: Not as bad as yesterday, but today was more humid, I think. I sweat so much during this run it was alarming - but no walk breaks, so yay for that. I took my phone again and decided that since yesterday’s run was so tough, I’d run with music today (which is not something I do often). I have Bluetooth headphones, so I connected those to my phone (again, in INKnBURN shorts pocket) and listened to the Finding Nemo - The Musical Area Loop while running. It was nice!

Unfortunately, just like last week, I didn’t time this run very well and got back too late to get to yoga on time. :headache: And I couldn’t stop sweating, so there’s that. Now that I’m typing this up later in the day (almost dinner time), I really regret not going to class. Boo!!

In other news - I have INK on the way!! :yay: Eek!! Bee kit (short-sleeve tech shirt and skirt) and serpent capris...and the Light Speed Tech shirt for Mr. A*. And FedEx is holding them hostage, and I don’t like it. They’ve been at the FedEx facility that is about 30 minutes away since 7:30 this morning. Per the tracking, my scheduled delivery day is Monday...and I’m concerned that FedEx will let my package sit until then. I’d really like to get this stuff tomorrow...work with me, FedEx!!

*Speaking of Mr. A...he’s doing a great job with his Wine & Dine 10K training! He’s only missed 1 run so far. I’m proud of him! :lovestruc

Saturday, July 23 (90-minute run @ Effort 2 planned, 60 minutes completed)
Bleh. Not a good way to finish off my running week!

I was out the door by 9AM and it was 90 degrees out...apparently trying 3 days in a row of this was too much for my body. At a little over 30 minutes, I stopped and started walking...I kept walking until I got to 60 minutes and called Mr. A to come rescue me. By then I felt okay and wondered if I could have kept going and finished the run, but once I got home and showered I had a headache and felt pretty zonked...so I think it's good I stopped when I did.

In other news, I was thinking again about Goofy training. Even though I've railed against his plans in the past, I am pretty sure I am going to go with a modified Galloway plan once my 10-mile race is done in early September - running is getting better for me, but this week has been super tough with the temperatures, and the thought of mostly running 3-day weeks is pretty appealing right now, especially since I'm liking yoga way more than running - this way it'll be easier for me to keep up with 3-day yoga weeks. I PM'd @ZellyB for some advice (thanks!), printed out a copy of the plan and marked it up (because you WILL NOT catch me doing 23- or 26-mile training runs...or walking 12 miles...what even?!). I still have a few weeks to think it over, but this is heavily what I'm leaning toward right now. :goofy:

Sunday, July 24 (yoga)
Oof. My body is DONE with the hot temperatures. After 3 hot runs in a row, a hot yoga class maybe wasn't a brilliant idea. :faint: I got through it, but I was totally zapped when I was done. Gonna drink alllll the water today!

My outfit was on point though, so there's that.

This week's temps have been intense. Don't let them get to you though because they've just been so oppressive it's hard to run. I almost quit yesterday too as my paces slipped from 30 seconds off pace to as much as 90 seconds off pace. So you're not alone!

Fall where are you??? :magnify:

running is getting better for me

BTW, yea for this! Keep up the great work!

Yeah, agree this heat/humidity sucks....but personally i'll take it over 0 degrees, negative windchill & ice! Our humidity just got better like in the last 2 hours so it's not an oven anymore. I just figure training in it makes fall running feel so much better & faster! I agree, no way on 23 or 26 mile training runs, that's nuts unless you are super fast.

Your dog is too cute! & yay for running getting better!

I quit after mile 4 of a scheduled 6 mile run for the same reasons. I felt awful. Definitely sick of the heat & humidity.

I get how heat and humidity can be killer on people that don't live in environments that normally have it! I'm used to it and at Beach Yoga this past week, I was in half moon and had to get out of it as a wave of nausea hit me hard and I just needed to get some water in my system to cool down.

Good job for getting at least 60 minutes in at that heat!

Okay, good! Somehow it just did not occur to me that the temperatures were truly that bad...I felt like a quitter until I starting reading more about how others are struggling too. So...we're struggling together. Yay?
Fall where are you??? :magnify:
UGH - that's exactly what I was thinking when I was walking toward home. I cannot wait for some fall running!!
BTW, yea for this! Keep up the great work!
I super appreciate that you quoted pretty much the one positive thing I said about running amidst all of my whining. I didn't even remember that I wrote that! So thanks. :)

I do somewhat okay in the winter...32 years of living in NE Ohio. ::yes:: But yeah, icy conditions are a no-go!! The heat and humidity just kill me.

That is true! Maybe the temperatures will drop, like, 20-30 degrees (some day...) and we'll all be be like 1:00/mile faster thanks to this hot weather running! :scratchin
I agree, no way on 23 or 26 mile training runs, that's nuts unless you are super fast.
Seriously though!! I am truly curious to know how many people actually follow the plan exactly as written and do those super long runs. It seems like most people cut them down to 20 miles, with the occasional 21- and 22-miler.
Your dog is too cute! & yay for running getting better!
Thanks!! :)

Hey, same. BOO!!!!!

Yeah, you must be sitting here laughing at the rest of us!

Yeah, I had the nausea hit me a bit when I was running on Friday...yoga was tough for me too. Lots of half moons for me as well during my class!
Good job for getting at least 60 minutes in at that heat!
:yay: Thanks!
So cute!!!
Thanks! :teeth:
Agree this week's/weekend's weather was brutal. Impressed that you even attempted longer runs three days in a row!
Yeah, looking back...I probably could have scheduled my week a little better! 3 days in a row in the heat wasn't my best idea.

Okay, good! Somehow it just did not occur to me that the temperatures were truly that bad...I felt like a quitter until I starting reading more about how others are struggling too. So...we're struggling together. Yay?

Yea, you know how they say the Amazon is. Just awful temps and humidity. Well for fun I looked up the weather forecast in the Amazon (Santarem, Brazil) on Saturday after my brutal run. Same conditions there as in Wisconsin...:crazy2: I like to look at the (temp + dew) to get an understanding of how bad the conditions are. This past weekend we were in the 165-170 range which is just brutal! Yay, struggle buddies!

I super appreciate that you quoted pretty much the one positive thing I said about running amidst all of my whining. I didn't even remember that I wrote that! So thanks. :)

To me, that statement stuck out as the most important running related thing you've written in the last few weeks. :thumbsup2

UGGGGGGG the heat!!!!! It's just miserable everywhere I think. Kudos on getting it done, but I so get you on being ready for fall temps.

Love the shot of the pup stealing Mr. A's seat. Good for him on going back to school, but I hear you on the time drain. Chris is still working on finishing up his doctoral program. Poor guy is just overwhelmed.

Which tank is that you are wearing with the Mermaid capris? It's a great match.

I would never laugh at people struggling with heat and humidity! If you don't have to deal with it on a normal basis, it is brutal!

I only laugh at people with jackets on in low 70 degree weather.

I am used to WAY more mild temperatures in the summer than this! This Amazon-like summer is kicking my butt!!

 Still up and down, but overall it's getting better!

YES...all the fall things, please. Cooler temperatures, pumpkin everything, fall colors...I am ready!!
Love the shot of the pup stealing Mr. A's seat.
You can tell by Archie's expression that he totally know's what he's doing and has no Fs to give. :)

Yes!! I got a post-graduate degree as well, but I did it right after college - if I'd started working first, I don't think I would have had the motivation to go back. I don't know how they are doing it!!
Which tank is that you are wearing with the Mermaid capris? It's a great match.
It's the classic Healing Mandala racer as seen below on the headless model! They also did this one in a camisole. I snagged my racer off of eBay about a year ago and paid maybe $5 over retail for it, which I was very happy with!

Yes it is! I think I underestimate how dangerous it truly can get.
I only laugh at people with jackets on in low 70 degree weather.
I'm right with you on that one!! That's still shorts weather! ::yes::

Yay! I am a verb. Thank you for roxymama-ing and sharing your salad picture because that looks really good. Avocado and bacon is always a correct choice in any dish.

That was a new combo for me (and we're having it again tonight)! Avocado is something I have never eaten until recently. I need to expand my food horizons! :)

Now, bacon...bacon, I am very familiar with. :lovestruc

I don;t know if you have Corner Bakery's by you, but I'm in love with the Uptown Turkey sandwich because of the giant amount of bacon and avocado on it. I feel like that's not a good thing to say on a running journal...like bacon is a dirty word. But that's why we run right?

I don't know of that place, but I want to go to there. You had me at "giant amount of bacon."

Yeah, what's the phrase - you either eat to run or run to eat? I run to eat. :teeth:

First of all, I too am so so relieved that no violence seem to have occurred during the RNC- for the residents of Cleveland and for everyone else! Congrats to Mr. A on working on his masters-- he's close to being done! And on his 10K training plan. I would love if my DH joined me in running, and every winter, he starts a couch to 5K plan but usually stops after about a month :(

Glad your new phone fits in your pockets so well!

And running in the heat is SO hard. Good for you for continuing to lace up even through the oppressive temperatures. I definitely wouldn't get down that you are not able to go as far or as fast in this heat!

Hi @Ariel484! Just popping in to say hey and to keep up the good work. I'm glad that it sounds like you had a decent week last week and are starting to feel a bit better about the runs. I'm right there with you about looking forward to fall running. I can never get motivated to go out when it's hot, I've been resorting to the treadmill lately (well before my cruise anyway, it's been 2 weeks since I've run now). I know the only way to get at all acclimated to it is to just suck it up, but it's so hard!

Also, I just had to say yay for another Olympics fan! We're really looking forward to it in my family too. We're always glued to the TV during those 2 weeks - for both the Summer and Winter Games. The 1996 Women's Gymnastics is the first Olympic memory I have, and I too was obsessed! We had some of the competition on a VHS as well and would watch it every now and then. We also went to the local show they had as part of their post-Olympic tour that year, which was so much fun.

Oh my gosh, me too. Looks like things were fine in Philly too. Whew!!

Thanks, I'll pass along the congrats - two weeks to go and this semester is done!! :)

I try not to bug Mr. A about running too much, but his motivation lately is more about getting cardio in to stay healthy. If they didn't have Food & Wine festival at WDW, I'm not sure I could have convinced him to do the 10K! :) We pretty much never run together, though...he's too fast for me!
Glad your new phone fits in your pockets so well!
Me too! It's really been a game changer...I'm so glad I switched to a smaller phone!
And running in the heat is SO hard. Good for you for continuing to lace up even through the oppressive temperatures. I definitely wouldn't get down that you are not able to go as far or as fast in this heat!
Ah, thanks. I need to remember this!!

Maybe I need to give the treadmill another look? I hate it but it may be better than trying to run in these summer temperatures! Hope your post-cruise runs are going well, it's SO tough to keep it up during vacation and to get back into the swing of things once you come home!

YES!! So pumped! :yay:

I went to that show, too!! The John Hancock one in 1996. I went to another one in, I think, 2008 after those Olympics. LOVE!!![/QUOTE]

Running Blind - Week 4
Monday, July 25 - Sunday, July 31, 2016

Monday, July 25 (45 minutes @ Effort 1)

Monday! Boo! The Republicans are gone so that means I actually need to go into the office again. First time in over a week I actually need to put make-up on and do my hair (Mr. A is a lucky guy, isn’t he? :)).

But first - running! I finally got a teeny tiny break weather-wise this morning (79 degrees with 79% humidity), and this was a pretty good run! But it was slooooooow - yes I did look at my pace afterward, which I’m mad at myself for...because I felt good about the effort I put in until I actually saw the numbers spelled out. Bad Shannon! Even though this run was slow it was refreshing to finish and not feel like death, unlike last week!

Tuesday, July 26 (rest)
Huzzah for rest day!

Got some fun mail yesterday - INKnBURN! I got the Bee skirt and shirt, and Serpent capris. Mr. A got the Light Speed tech shirt...I'll have to chase him down and make him take a picture.

Serpent capris with Bee shirt...picture of Bee Skirt to follow:
28394774500_fd5b2090f9_z.jpg

Some day my neighbors will catch me taking pictures of myself like this and think I am absolutely, 100% insane. :)

In other news, I typed up my schedule for Goofy training - all color-coded and everything. I’m going to let it sit and think about whether it’s really the way I want to go, but overall I think I’m excited for it. :)

Speaking of excited - today marks 99 days until the Wine & Dine trip! :yay: Wheeeee! Here’s hoping return flights for Mr. A drop in price at some point (Southwest is KILLING me - every morning I check two possible flights and they haven’t gone below $218-$258 in the weeks I have been watching them! Ugh), because beyond adding said flight info to our reservation for Magical Express and making FP+, that’s all the planning we have left to do for this trip!

Wednesday, July 27 (45-minute run @ Effort 1/Effort 3/Effort 1 pace/yoga)
Yeehaw! I got out the door a little late for my run this morning, but I felt...dare I say...chilly? Amazing weather for today’s run - 63 degrees out! 85% humidity, but still...boy did it feel nice. And it resulted in a really good run today! It’s amazing what a difference the temperature can make. I did a better job of not looking at my pace or distance, but this one felt pretty good.

Also, I saw THESE WITTLE BABIES SQUEEEEE. And clearly they saw me! :)
28062080574_090cf24d27_z.jpg

I stopped and talked to them (from a distance) because I enjoy talking to animals. :) Glad their mom wasn’t around because I’m pretty sure she would have chased me away!

Outfit of the day, featuring the aforementioned Bee skirt! If you’re thinking, “gee, this would be a good runDisney race outfit,” I’d have to agree with you on that. :)
28678702595_de31fe6b63_z.jpg

I tried something new for yoga tonight - a power class! Eek! My normal Wednesday-night yoga is 7:30-8:30...power class is 6:15-7:15, so I thought maybe I’d like getting done a little earlier and eating dinner afterward, instead of eating dinner beforehand. Plus, one of the teachers I really like teaches this class…

...however, the class is described as “dynamic and challenging,” “vigorous” and “for the experienced student...not recommended for new students.” I’ve been going to yoga regularly for awhile now, but I haven’t been to one of these power classes for at least a year, so I wasn’t sure if I’d be ready yet!

The verdict? It actually went much better than I expected...I would say I was able to keep up with about 75-80% of it, which I think was pretty good. It was another “hot” class, so I was sweating buckets, of course...but I felt pretty strong. My arms and legs have definitely gotten much stronger than I realized!

Crazy yoga pose of the day we were supposed to attempt - and I think I’ve pasted this one here before:
split-leg-arm-balance-edit-329_0.jpg

I feel like I need to take a physics class to understand how this one is supposed to work. And look at how calm the chick in the picture looks - her face looks so relaxed, like, “no biggy, it’s totally casz that I’m doing this crazy thing with my body!” What even. Needless to say, this pose falls into the 20-25% portion of the class where I COULD NOT keep up. Eek!

Mr. A made dinner when I got home, which was really, really nice - this recipe. Yum!

Thursday, July 28 (60-minute run @ Effort 1)

Schedule change! I have plans early on Saturday and yesterday it occurred to me that in order to get my run in before said plans, I’d need to wake up pretty early on Saturday. My plans are going to keep me busy until mid-afternoon, so the run would HAVE to be done in the morning, because with temperatures lately, I’m not about to try to run at 3PM or whatever. I decided to bump my runs up 1 day and run today and tomorrow instead of Friday and Saturday. I think I’ll be happier I did this in a couple of days.

This morning I was not happy. I have been doing a bad job of getting to bed early so I sooooo did not want to get up early this morning! But I dragged myself out of bed.

I SAW THE WITTLE BABIES AGAIN SQUEEEEE! But their mom was with them and was watching me verrrrrry closely, so I didn’t stick around as long. When these babies were first born (apparently a few houses down from ours), this mama deer was hanging out around our house and when we’d try to go outside to walk Archie, she’d start creeping toward us like she was about to charge! It was freaky! And apparently she chased a neighbor’s dog around since the dog got too close. So with that in mind, like I said, I wasn’t going to hang around much this morning.

As for the run itself...it was okay. I definitely felt tired and like I was just shuffling along the entire time. Oh well, at least it was cool out. And I definitely think it was the right call with my Saturday plans looming.

Friday, July 29 (60-minute run @ Effort 2/yoga)
Oof. This run was crap-tastic. :(

I got out at a semi-decent time, and while it wasn’t in the 90s, it was still pretty warm. Just like last week, I was ready to quit at the halfway point. I can’t really articulate why...it sounds incredibly lame but I guess I just wasn’t into it. I even texted Mr. A telling him as much. I didn’t quit, though...I let myself walk for a few minutes and then finished up the run by doing 4/1 intervals of running/walking. Now that I’m a little further removed from this run, I’m still not not completely sure how to feel about it...I keep fluctuating between being disappointed in myself for walking so much and proud of myself for finishing when I was 100% ready to pack it in.

Since I was beating myself up over this run going “badly,” I made it a point to get to yoga to do something nice for myself. After feeling so strong on Wednesday, this was not my best class...I think I was just cooked (mentally and physically) from the run. But I still went! And I felt a heck of a lot better afterward.

A couple of months ago I signed up to volunteer at a local bike event that is happening downtown this weekend. This is a great event that raises money for cancer research and has lots of different distances for people to participate in - from 12 miles all the way up to 200+ miles! My shift was today from 9:30-2:30 downtown, and I was working at the merchandise booth. Last year I worked at the bike & bag drop tent, which was fun and felt like a meaningful thing to do, but that position wasn’t available this year when I went to sign up. Somehow I feel like selling merchandise wasn’t as helpful, but whatever.

Anyway - I am so happy that I did my runs earlier this week so I could sleep in today! Volunteering was fun, but it was WARM out! We had to wear volunteer t-shirts, which were heavy cotton and not breathable - I was really tempted to buy a moisture-wicking shirt and wear that all day, but I knew I’d never wear it again so I resisted. Thankfully we were housed in a tent, so at least I was in the shade all day. And while the first hour or so was slow, because the cyclists had just started riding, once they started coming back in the merch tent was hopping! My shift went by really quickly and I was constantly moving for most of it.

I’m happy with my decision to volunteer for this event again, even if it ate up most of my Saturday! There was a great turnout and lots of money (over $2.5M!) was raised for an extremely deserving cause. :)

And look who came to visit! Per Mr. A, they were hanging out in our backyard allll day. And then they came up front!

Archie was...not so pleased. :) But I was!

Sunday, July 31 (rest)
I was supposed to head to yoga this morning, but when my alarm went off my body was just like, "NOPE." So I slept instead. Boo!

Oh well, a new week and new month is beginning! Here's to hitting all of my planned workouts. :)
