What he is trying to figure out...
You were about 1 stop faster in your aperture. But you were 1.5 stops darker in your shutter speed. So IF your exposure was equal, then your (Fractal) ISO should have been about a half stop higher than BigE. Yet, your ISO is 1.5 stops lower.
So by his math, there is a 2-stop exposure difference in your images. (You don't include the EC -- the EC is what caused the camera to calculate the right triangle settings, it's not in addition to the triangle).

Now to my eye, BigE is overexposed... is it 2 stops of overexposure? Probably not 2 stops.... But between some overexposure, as well as just possible differences in the ambient light at that moment, and differences in how different cameras calculate ISO, as well as the real transmission of the lens (Not all 2.8 lenses actually transmit that level of light... not all 2.8 lenses are truly exactly equal. Some may be more like F3, for example).

I interpreted he was calculating a 3 stop difference in SS. Also - I think 2.8 to 1.8 is closer to 1.5 stops than 1. Add in the other factors you mentioned and that could easily account for that difference. When I rode SSE last Summer I would have bet a lot of money the lights were dimmer than last time I rode in 2013.

I like the last version. Get accustomed to looking at your histogram while shooting, if you don't already. It will give you an idea of exposure while shooting. Metering/light and exposure values will be different in every scene. And all cameras meter differently.

And just to refresh.. Whether you choose spot or matrix, will determine how the camera adjusts. Spot metering on a bright spot makes the camera think plenty of light is available, allowing you to lower ISO, increase shutter speed. Spot metering on a dark area does the opposite. Matrix metering on a scene with a few brightly lit subjects and lots of dark dark shadows will tend to overexpose the brighter areas because the camera thinks there is less light available. Using matrix on rides with equal light and dark usually turns out ok.

Did a nice session with this model this morning. 1 of the sets is NSFW, and certain NSF a Disney board..
But I thought I'd share 2 of the shots for feedback.

I like the pose and comp on both shots. In shot 2 the background is adding nothing to the overall look so I'd maybe play with darkening it. The second shot I like the background. For processing, I'd work on and around the eyes, remove some shine from face #1 and nose #2. I'd lighten under eyes, above lips and on chin. Make hair pop a bit more. Smooth hand on #1. Tone down lips on #1. But other than that ... :)

I'd like to know the secret to getting pretty gals to model for you..

You should see the NSFW shots....

Funny you should say to tone down the lips, I had toned up the lips! lol. Maybe I should go back to natural for the lips. Yes, I should definitely smooth the hand. The WB looks slightly off to me in the first shot, but I really like the shot overall.

Ok, here's my favorite part of this thread. Where I take your perfectly good shots and jack around with them. I like your colors but I changed them around just because. Added some pop to the hair along with some of the other stuff I mentioned.

Like you did with the second one. With the first one, you played around and gave it a "look." I'd say it's subjective..... I kinda like it. I dare say your adaption would be more likely to appear in a gallery, though my original rendition would be more likely to appear on a fashion blog/magazine.

I did update it myself:

My own updated version:

This is giving me an opportunity to play with some new presets/brushes. You are right, the other one I posted had a bit too much of that antique look going on. But I am a big fan of desaturating skin tones. Havoc, you seem to know your stuff.. in what situations would you use color/pop or color/natural vs going with more of a desaturated, pale or antique/contrast/b&w look?

You think I know what I'm doing??!?!

Honestly, I simply try different looks and generally end up back towards my default for most images. I generally don't desaturate skin tones, though your treatment of this portrait looks good. I'll desaturate if the skin tones took on any unnatural colors.

I'll often simply play around with a few of the photos in any particular set.

Good shots Adam, they just remind me of a bit of advise my Dad once gave me. "Be careful what pie you put your pickle in".

Overall I like the portraits @havoc315 - my one issue, if it is an issue because that may be the look you were going for, is with the eyes. Every shot has the sultry, pupil in the corner or top look. I would have liked to see a more normal shot with the pupils in the middle and maybe use the lips and mouth to create a sensual vibe. Lips slightly parted, etc.

I found and follow a Russian photographer (George Chernyadyev) on 500px and instagram that does amazing portraits in this genre. The eyes and lips of these young models will make your knees buckle. Here's a link to his 500px page for some different ideas and inspiration.

Question for you - was this a model you paid for or did she pay you for the shoot?

Great share. I didn't love what the model did with her eyes on many shots but there is a lot to direct. I paid a small stipend, I really wanted to stretch my skills a bit.
