NCL cancels fireworks off their Getaway/Breakaway ships

What is strange is we saw this our first few cruises, where the other ships would book out of there when they were done. Oddly we haven't seen this again in a few years, wonder if DCL raised a stink about it.

We got the double show last year in the Eastern Carib. The NCL ship did their fireworks and then Disney did theirs. We were forward in the adults area and had a great view. There was also a third ship in the area without fireworks. Lucky them. Don't know if Disney cares or not about other ships. I know when we pull out of the ports and the ship plays the multi-tone horn, the passengers on nearby ships tend to look a bit sadder or greener with envy.

Does anyone know how long the NCL fireworks shows were? Were they any longer than DCL's 3 - 4 minute fireworks shows?

There was not much DCL can do about the other ships....its a big free ocean, as long as the other vessels stay far enough away for safe navigation, they can watch all they want.

Disney developed the Fireworks system they use at sea for the parks shows originally. It is much safer as the shells are fired by compressed air. Since NCL/ Uni and I believe, other fireworks shows uses the same system I guess there is nothing DCL/Disney can do about it.

Hey there @C6PT7......it was the way they got the international maritime agencies and the USCG to approve them....Back when they started the fireworks, it was on one of the DCL TV infomercials, they described the system and how they got it approved..It is my understanding that after the shell clears the deck the explosive/propellent parts of the shells take over.

You can see some smoke(like?) in illuminations in the lake during their fireworks and use the same system.

and my friend I just watched a 7 1/2" minute DCL fireworks only show on Bing. For the record............weather, winds, and seas can effect how long each individual show can be.

I'll be on the Fantasy this November so I'll be putting this on my list of things to confirm one way or the other!. I'll report back to you Mun!

Hopefully, this thread will still be going by then! I will be on the Wonder in December and I will bring my stop watch. We can compare notes. Enjoy your cruise!

Can you share a link please @Tonka's Skipper? I've watched loads of the shows and I'm interested to see what was different on the video you mentioned.

Here is the video i mentioned earlier
you can see the flashes of what looks like the lift charge on Palo roof

I can tell you that from my family's perspective, any looks we were giving Dream from Freedom were with the thoughts "bye bye suckers!" On our second Dream cruise we were bummed we were on Dream, since we could see "our" future Freedom sitting there, waiting the 3 months until that sailing.

But you can't see faces at all, unless you're bionic or have binoculars (creepy). So all you are doing is speculating. And I saw and heard *no one* wishing they were on Dream, as we left PC on Freedom. We were all VERY happy to be on OUR ship.

Can't sonvince some of that, though! My cousin falls in with the DCL party line being mentioned here, that ships hang out for the fireworks and they're so jealous etc. She just can't figure out that people choose other lines because they WANT to be on other lines.

As for ships being near each other, that's just part of cruising. I remember in 2003 Alaska, watching off the aft as other ships "followed" (aka went to the same port we were going to because that's just how it is with cruising). The ships hang out near each other, or end up near each other. It is what it is.

I thought the whole pirate show was atrocious on Dream. We caught it once. Never again! Serious waste of our time. I'm spoiled by our town's 7/4 fireworks along with the former glory of Disneyland's fireworks. No point in seeing others.

I seriously doubt other cruisers on other lines are jealous. There probably laughing at DCL cruisers spending all that money for the same cruise. I've only cruised DCL(with discounts), but we never do DCL excursions so we always seem to end up on a tours, or in taxis, or at beach clubs with cruisers from other lines. I've never heard anyone complain about the ship they're on. They're happy! They're on vacation! A lot of them are happy they don't have to deal with all the kids. I have heard a lot of DCL cruisers complain about the cost of their cruises..... on the ship and on these boards. I love DCL, but I cruise in the offseason with discounts.

I think fireworks are pretty but I hate that horrible cloud of smoke and all the chemicals that fall into the ocean. Cruises are not very environmental friendly in the first place but fireworks seemed like a little over the top for 10 minutes of entrainment.

Just for information, I took a guided tour of one of the Disney ships on a prior cruise and was told that the fireworks that Disney Cuirseline uses are made of fishfood and the parts that fall into the ocean are environmentally friendly because they feed the fish. Leave it to Disney to ensure they are not harming the environment.

You really believe that? Wow.
:rotfl2:

I actually witnessed it. Back when DCL was still in its infancy, and the Big Red Boat was running the Loony Toons Characters, the Magic and the Wonder would be tied up next to her in Nassau. This was when DCL stayed in Nassau until 230 in the morning. They used to have a midnight fireworks display tied to the pier, and you could see the people on the deck of the Big Red Boat run to the rail closest to the DCL ship that was tied up there. So it does happen. Exactly what was said, after I couldn't tell you but we were getting applause from the Big Red Boat.

The pirate shows were one and done for us as well. Maybe when the munchkin is old enough to care and if we continue with DCL it'll become a favorite. but I look forward to the day when experiencing other lines that offer more adventure and thrills on board becomes a higher priority than occupying a toddler.

Just a little tongue in cheek folks about the jealousy of other cruiseline guests. While I'm surprised it sparked some debate, I don't want anyone walking away with a sour face! :love2:
