snakes and alligators

That is definitely not a burmese python. The markings on a burmese python are brown, dark brown, and black and the pattern is much bolder.

There are several pictures - lots of different colors - of them when we googled it, and one of the colorings was exactly like the one at Disney. Didn't see any pics of corn snakes with that type coloring.

I have seen a little gator hanging out under the board walkway in frontier land in the magic kingdom didn't see one at the Fort tho, but I looked

My wife and I both think its a corn snake based on photos. We picked that out from photos a couple days ago from a snakes of Florida Google search (Red Rat Snake / Corn Snake). What makes me fairly certain is the belly. You can see some of it in the higher resolution photo I posted (http://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-X...AAAAAAAA4ws/33AIXIxfe6s/s2048-no/IMG_3502.JPG)
It matches much better with the patterning of a corn snake and not at all with a Burmese Python (at least what I have seen on the web). Anyway, that's our best guess from seeing it up close and personal.

Only 4? 4 is a lot to me, I live in NY where we don't have any!

Sorry, out of 50+ snakes native to central Florida, only 4 are venomous, according to the Central Florida Zoo. We're in TN, so we're accustomed to a similar snake landscape. Water snakes (cottonmouths) are territorial. So, my biggest worry would be around the canal - as if the gators aren't enough.

All this snake talk is giving me snake nightmares! Hoping we don't have any "visitors" at our upcoming first stay tent camping. Leaving in a month.

Sorry! I will stop talking now. But on the bright side, The Fort only has one variety, as far as we know. And he seemed pretty friendly.

Was at Old Key West last week and saw one race across the sidewalk.

I thought this was a recipe thread!

I don't have any recipes, but my son had a fried alligator sandwich and said it tastes just like chicken. I'll have to look into the Florida laws regarding trapping alligators, perhaps we could get a few meals and a new pair of shoes this vacation. Or maybe I should look into squirrel recipes; I have heard they are all over the campground...

Letsbgoofy, some NY trivia on poisonous snakes of NY: There are only three species of poisonous snakes living in the wilds of New York (many other kinds may be found in the homes of private individuals and, occasionally, escapes occur!). These are the timber rattlesnake, the massasauga (erroneously called "pygmy rattler"), and the copperhead. All three are uncommon. The timber rattlesnake (listed as "Threatened" by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation) enjoys the widest range; it is found mainly in the southeastern part of the state, except Long Island and New York City, with scattered populations as far north as Lake George and also along the Southern Tier in western New York. Its populations have been severely reduced, primarily due to bounties and commercial capture for snakeskin products and the pet trade. The massasauga (listed as "Endangered") occurs in only two locations, both large wetlands. One is located northeast of Syracuse and the other is west of Rochester. This species is the subject of a cooperative research program between researchers at SUNY-ESF and NYSDEC. The copperhead is mainly found along the lower Hudson Valley south of Kingston; it is essentially absent from the Catskills and points further west.

Did someone get a pic of the head of this snake in the tree? Don't poisonous snakes have a diamond shaped head?

along the Southern Tier in western New York.

I have lived in the Southern Tier my whole life and have never seen a rattlesnake and don't know anyone who has. We have camped 20 times or more at Watkins Glen and have not seen or heard anything about rattlesnakes. We have camped several times in Lake George, no rattlesnakes. Not saying they aren't there, we have just never seen them. Of course now I'll be looking...

We camp primarily in either Watkins Glen or the Adirondacks, so I guess we have just been lucky enough to miss the areas in NYS where there are poisonous snakes that want to be found. Bears now is another matter. Why is it that they are less frightening to me?

I bet they eat snakes and use the gators for canal transport

So basically what you are saying is that I need to watch the squirrels to make sure that they don't carry my dog away? Do they often form herds like that? I wonder how many it would take to lift a 65 pound dog??

Sorry to bust your bubble , but there are a number of Rattlesnakes and copperheads in NY, all poisonous.

Let me clarify but putting my statement in another word order...where we live in NY there are no poisonous snakes. The most common theme in research about poisonous snakes in NYS is that they are rarely seen. I'm much more concerned about snakes in Florida where every person that I know who lives there has seen 1. an alligator in a body of water near their home and 2. a poisonous snake of some variety near (or in one case in) their home.

From the replies here it seems that snakes and alligators are not a big problem at FW. The real danger seems to be herds of squirrels...

Letsbegoofy, I know people that have seen snakes in my own family as well in the Hudson Valley region of NY where I live. My dad has seen copperheads in our area, over by Camp Smith and other areas up in Dutchess County near Fishkill. My husband's job's had a meeting about the fact that there were a number of rattlesnakes spotted near their substation in Rockland County and to be careful when you work there. My niece saw a rattlesnake while she was hiking up in the mountain near Cold Spring, NY.

I have no doubt, that's why we avoid camping in that part of NYS. When I was young, I read this series of books about Trixie Belden. She lived in the Hudson Valley and her brother got bit by a Copperhead. Hmmm...maybe that's where my fear of snakes comes from.
