Girl Pooping At Disneyland Shanghai?

Joined
May 7, 2016
On the prior show the team showed a pic of a girl pooping in one of the landscaped areas at Shanghai

Kathy had brought up an interesting point about how different cultures may approach a theme park

I must admit.

I myself have become irritated at times when I have seen some of the visiting country tour groups treat disney world property or behave on the bus.

To me I think this is a result of how these new theme parks have become disconnected from Walt and how the how countries have embraced the new commercial ( captain jack/star wars) aspects of disney

I really think Disney should make a better attempt to explain the history and how Walt came about creating the parks and how it should be respected

Shanghai only knows modern Disney though. They don't know much else. Disney is a new brand in Shanghai whereas here it's one of the largest brands we have. Disney built this park with that in mind. Every other Disney park was built in a place where Disney was already well represented and older Disney is present without.

As Ryan said, much of Disney is foreign to China. They do not understand "Main Street USA" or the legacy of Walt Disney. Disney is a brand in mainland China. Additionally, Disney holds the IPs inside the Shanghai park but the government owns 57% of the park and calls the shots on what history and back story are conveyed about the Disney Legacy to the Chinese people.

This. Ryan FTW

I'm going to go off course for a bit, and not try to make excuses for that behavior. It doesn't matter if people know only modern Disney...the basic human being essentials for property that isn't yours shouldn't disappear. What I say was disgraceful, and hopefully does not carry forward through the parks opening.

But to them it's not disrespectful
At my old job, the parent company was a Hong Kong based company.
The owners and directors were all Hong Kong natives.
They snorted and spat indoors in meetings, they farted and burped openly in business situations and socially... It's cultural.

I remember watching a documentary that when HK Disney opened they just didn't know to ask these cultural questions and things like using the flowers for restrooms caught them by surprise, especially in the landscaping costs.

It'll get better quick as HK disney did and it's the cultural learning curve. I don't like what they were doing, but it's the culture there and completely acceptable to them (and kind of expected).

Well Hong Kong is very westernized since it was a British colony at one point I believe. However Shanghai is true mainland China.

You've also got to remember, Disney isn't a huge legacy elsewhere around the world like it is in the USA.

People don't give a you know what about who Walt was down here... Disneyland is a place you go when your flight to the USA lands in LAX, and you spend a day there and that's about it.
Some people subscribe to the theory that Walt was a bad man who liked children a little too much (that one drives me crazy!!) so even if a park opened here, the cultural significance wouldn't be there for MOST people.

I'm in the smallest minority here in AUS when it comes to the love and passion I have to the Walt Disney company and the parks, people just like finding nemo and remember growing up with the Disney Renaissance movies.

I've read many comments here and in other places that Disney is a new brand in China/Shanghai. So my question is...why build a big park there? Yes, I understand that just by numbers alone (in terms of population), it makes sense. But still, I have to wonder...why build there?

The simple answer is money. The government controls everything the people are allowed to see and experience so having the blessing to build a Disney park in China means they can more easily get generations of Chinese obsessed with the brand. Also having a good relationship with China means that business relations between China and Disney will get better and therefore better Disney's chances to get television, movies, and other media approved for showing in mainland China.

A coworker of mine is from Shanghai and she said everyone is very excited about Disney opening there especially because theirs will be better than Hong Kong.

Now i don't know first hand, but my brother had worked in china for about 6mos a few years ago. He told us, about children pooping in public. He said it was pretty commonplace. So when i saw the pic, esp since the parent was assisting, i immediately thought of what he had told us. Guess he was right.

I was in Shanghai back in 2007 and our guide who was a local pointed out that toddlers wore pants with a slit in the bottom (no diaper) so when they had to poop or pee they just squatted where they were and did it...in the street etc.

I can see this. I heard that Mickey Mouse has been one of America's best ambassador's abroad.

It's not just a Shanghai Disney thing. Google Chinese tourists and you'll find tons of articles about their poor behavior. They have defaced hieroglyphics in Egypt and thrown hot soup on a stewardess. Although these are the most egregious examples, their general behavior around the world has been very poor. Perhaps it is because they were denied the ability to travel freely for so long that they never developed an etiquette for travel. Disney will have its hands full trying to maintain that park until they do. I hate to stereotype any group, and I'm sure there are many Chinese tourists that are well-behaved, but right now the uncouth ones are making all the headlines.

We were in China in 1992, times were much different there then for sure, but at that time toddlers wore the clothing with slits. I saw toddlers peeing and pooping everywhere, temples, the Great Wall, formal gardens. It's part of the culture and an acceptable part of child rearing. I'm sure some things routinely done in this country are just as strange from the outside.

Yes, my brother had told us about these pants too. It seemed far fetched to me, but evidently it's true. Different culture.
