To be clear, I'm not using the adjusted from inflation chart from diminishing TFA's achievement at the box office. It is very difficult to apples-to-apples TFA with Gone with the Wind, which saw an average ticket price of 23¢.
It is absolutely true, also that a film like GWTW had very little competition from outside media, or even from theatrical releases. I cannot find the numbers, but I'm willing to bet you didn't have 3-4 films released on any given weekend. The math is complicated, and there are so many outside factors that you can easily debate the merits of the actual rankings on the list.
As I said, only 2 films from this century have cracked the top 20 - and TFA beats Avatar both in raw numbers and in adjusted numbers.
It stands to reason that this is the last time we'll see any film chase $1B at the domestic box office for a good long while. That day will come - either through inflation or through an event. Probably the former.
