The star wars spoiler thread

It would have been nice to get past titanic...which I always thought was a pile of nothing that looked really cool (a James Cameron trademark)...but it's not meant to be

I thought Titanic was fine. The youthful exuberance of young Leo carried the pic ... kind of like a more worldly Luke Skywalker. The rest was standard Hollywood "get from point A to B" sweeping action epic with a more heart-wringing than usual love interest.

Star Wars' emotional core is more geeky, kind of sexless and unromantic, in the strictly heterosexual sense that Titanic was romantic. The Finn-Rey interaction was distinctly ... ambiguous. The Han-Leia and Anakin-Padme courtships can't hold a candle to Titanic's romance, in the chick-flick, bodice-ripping sense of the word.

So in other words, I "get" Titanic's possibly equal or better box office appeal.

Titanic also has an unfair advantage. Its total gross is from its initial release (1.84 bill) and its re-release(343.6 mill) combined

Just remember there's a movie in between :)

But rogue one might be a breath of fresh air...they don't have to really get tangled up in "style" because it's not episodic and people won't be so tight about it.

It has the potential to be a real nice twist in Star Wars history...if it breaks right.

I would think you might see summa that action for TFA as well, no?

Oh you definitely will. I still doubt it will be enough to catapult it past Avatar. I don't see people flocking back to see it like they did Titanic, due to the fact that we've already had TFA in 3D and IMAX.

I am very curious about Rogue One. My first guess is that box office will be substantially down because it's not part of the trilogy and no Han/Luke/Leia.

However, it's their first chance to do something different and there's several ways they could go: Ocean's 11 in space? WWII Spy Movie in space?

Star Wars Rebels is the first true test. Only non-relevant cameos from big players (R2, Leia)

In fact, depending on how things go they are building a huge back story that can flow right into Rogue One. We are probably unknowingly seeing the creation of key players for that movie. Same time frame, same universe.

Could Kanan or Ezra lead the spies? What about Sabine? Chopper? Could Asohka be pulling the strings and the final showdown between her and Anakin happen in the movie? Could the Inquisitors or Agent Kallus or Grand Moff Tarkin be in Rogue? (Tarkin is a certainty)

If you follow rebels there are 2 things I see:
It's proof there is a GREAT Star Wars outside of Luke, Leia, Han.
They have built a large catalog of characters and stories to use in Rogue One if they want.

Cartoons are just cartoons. They don't indicate how things will translate to the big screen - where the real
Money is made

I have not been that impressed by Rebels in Season 2. Yes there are fun cameos, but the individual stories are primitive. Perhaps due to the (perceived) limitations of the age range they are targeting.

Cartoons are cartoons, books are books... however, between Marvel, and the build up to TFA Disney has made it clear they intend to flush out characters outside of the movies. It is NOT a coincidence that Rebels is timed at the exact same time as Rogue One. What you are seeing is the establishment of characters outside the movies "where the money is made".

They don't have time to build characters up inside of the main movies. So they are using books, comics, and cartoons to do it. The fact they are now bringing cartoon characters into the Parks and interacting them directly with established movie characters from Star Wars is a direct hint about how this will play out.

To each their own. I didn't find Titanic's love story particularly romantic nor did I care for that movie that much. I think I was too old. I didn't get Leo's appeal

Han and Leia are pretty dang romantic for me. I swooned when Han kissed Leia in The Empire Strikes back. Han (Harrison Ford) was one of my first crushes.

Give me Kate Winslet in Sense and Sensibility over Titanic. Oh Alan Rickman.

What is romantic is different for each of us. Han/Leia was the first couple I rooted for.

Gwendoline Christie confirms Captain Phasma return in Star Wars: Episode VIII

British actor hopes mainstream success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens will encourage more women to audition for parts originally written for men

Gwendoline Christie has confirmed she will return to the role of imposing villain Captain Phasma in the forthcoming sequel to box-office record-breaker Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Speaking to People magazine at the Screen Actors Guild awards on 30 January, Christie also said she hoped her achievement in winning the part of a character originally written for a man would encourage greater diversity in Hollywood.

The math is very complex, and it's probably not wholly accurate here, but adjusted for inflation tells a very different story.

Star Wars The Force Awakens : Adjusted for inflation

Titanic was the last film to crack the top 10. SW:TFA will just miss it. Still an impressive feat. There are only 2 films from this century in the top 20.

This is domestic only. I've not seen a published worldwide list. Probably because the math and variables would be far too complex.

Every movie in the Top 10 has had multiple releases. TFA is #11 with a single release

Comparing movies now to movies from a time when people didn't all have the tv, dvds and Netflix isn't really that meaningful I think. Basically it tells us that when there was less competition, more people went to watch movies. Which is.... duh...

Also note that in that list 6 of the movies in the top 10 have been released twice or more...

Actually if you read the side note, it's noted that all the pre-1980s movies had multiple untracked releases. Which makes all the movies multiple releases.

The only thing this does is tell us domestically the Force Awakens was very big. Which isn't exactly news.

Ignore 3D and IMAX inflation. It was big.
Calculate dollar inflation? It was big.
Compare to similar movies? Big
Opening day/weekend/week? Big big big.
All time dollar gross? Big.

In other words TFA was a very big release and according to that bastion of truth - it's still tracking over 90% on rotten tomatoes.

So - can we all agree to call it a money grabbing repetitious sexist racist marketing ploy hugely successful reboot-a-sequel and get back to figuring out how I will convince my wife to let me run away with Daisy? Focus people! :D

for the sake of posterity these numbers are domestic only

great points
i hear these arguments about todays movies vs older movies
one thing that should be pointed out is todays movies deal with netflix and red box etc... and more movies are made today than 30 years ago
its a different period of time
TFA is a great success period 3D, IMAX or whatever it doesnt matter it was a winner
