It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was a week long trip to Disney World and the Silly and Mischievous Canucks planned to take in all the holiday festivities before the youngest member of the tribe packed up and moved to the West Coast. As with most family vacations we had lots of fun and some really great moments and then some not so great moments but the good will always outweigh the bad and that is what I will choose to remember.

Let me give you an introduction to the members of this silly group of mischief makers before jumping into the story of how this week of Christmas festivities unfolded.

First up I will introduce myself, Lessa, the planner of this little family trip. I am the oldest of three siblings and my mother describes me as the "alpha" of the family. I like to be in charge and make all the plans. I do extensive research before traveling and that includes trips to WDW. In the past I have made vacation planning binders but for this trip I relaxed a bit and relied on my cell phone and the MDE app to keep track of all our plans. I work exhausting hours as a Registered Nurse and I was very much looking forward to a week of not having to worry about taking care of patients, medications, code situations, etc. Or so I thought...

Next up is the mother unit, Beth. Mom has not been on a true vacation since our last Disney trip back in May 2011. She had been saying for a long time that she wanted to go on vacation and so when I presented her with the idea of this December WDW trip she jumped on it. Mom has Multiple Sclerosis and in the past traveling in the humid and hot months has been a bit challenging for her. We were hoping that the cooler month of December would make park touring more comfortable for her. Mom has also been working hard at losing weight and she was very much looking forward to seeing how this weight loss would impact her endurance on the long days in the parks. Right before the trip she visited the dentist and found out that she had cracked a tooth. A temporary crown was placed and she was provided with an antibiotic and painkillers just in case an issue arose on the trip. We were really hoping that an emergency trip to the dentist would not be in the cards for us...

I have two younger brothers, Alek and Erich. Alek is the middle child and was skeptical about taking this trip as he feels that we go to Disney too often. He enjoys Disney but he feels that when you go too often you lose the magic as it all becomes too familiar. I convinced him that this trip was a good idea by talking about New Fantasyland, the Christmas activities and the fact that this would be our last chance to see Hollywood Studios in its current state. It also helped that I told him I would be footing the hotel bill as a Christmas present to the family. ;) Alek and our younger brother Erich are the goof balls of the family and it is always a good time when they are around. They are always very creative and able to come up with silly and fun things to do in the moment. Mom and I are not like that at all so it creates a nice balance.

Lastly is Alek's partner in all things silly and mischievous, our younger brother Erich. Erich worked as a Cast Member through the College Program several years ago. He had not been planning on returning to WDW so soon but was also convinced when I offered the incentive of a "free" hotel stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge. The timing of this trip turned out to be fortuitous as Erich decided this Fall that he will be moving out to the West Coast in January in the hopes of pursuing a career in Human Resources.

Now that you are familiar with the main players in this Christmas adventure I will share the basic details. We were traveling from Canada, flying from Toronto, and staying for a week at the Animal Kingdom Lodge in a savanna view room. Our dates were December 6-12. Our main goal of the trip was to experience all the Christmas activities and to check out the new attractions in New Fantasyland.

I plan to update several times a week and will be including lots of photos, video and funny stories. Feel free to chime in and say hello! I welcome an interactive thread.:goodvibes

Our travel "adventure" started at midnight as it always seems to do when we travel. We had decided to catch a direct flight from Toronto rather than from Syracuse in the States as we were not sure what the weather would be like and didn't want to get delayed by snow. Turns out we had nothing to worry about as it has been unseasonably warm up here this December.

I had spent most of the day sleeping after getting off from a night shift so I woke up at 8pm, finished my packing, showered and then watched some Scandal for a few hours. My brothers were both working that night and didn't expect to be off work and ready to go until at least midnight. Luckily all went smoothly with that and I was picking them up from their apartments right around midnight. I did have to back track home after that though as I had forgotten my flip flops. Alek and Erich didn't let me forget that the whole way to the airport as both Mom and I had called them/sent texts reminding them to pack things such as their swim trunks and passport.

Disney tunes and Christmas carols blasting we hit the road for our presumed 2 1/2 hour drive to the Toronto airport. All was going swimmingly and we were just near the suburbs of Toronto when we saw that the highway was closed at Bowmanville and that we would have to take a detour. No problem right? There will be lots of clear signs right? NOPE

We got off the highway and there was a flashing sign with a message saying where to go but the message switched so quickly that I was past it before we could read it clearly. There was also no other highway traffic that we could follow since it was 2:45 in the morning. I was pretty sure that I understood what it said so I started driving north but after a few minutes with no other detour signs I started to get worried. Mom then said she thought that we had to go the other way so I turned around and went the opposite way. Well that led us to a private road that connected to a Nuclear Power Plant. Pretty sure that was not the correct detour route... So we turned around again and this time I drove really slowly as we passed the flashing detour instruction sign so we could all read it properly. Turns out I had read it correctly the first time so back we went the original direction we had gone. Turns out I just hadn't driven far enough out into the countryside to find the detour route. Once we were finally on the correct road I started to feel a bit better but there was no lighting and the signage for the detour was pretty much nonexistent so it was really difficult to know when we needed to turn to get back onto the highway. I was stressed out the whole time thinking we would be really delayed getting to the airport and clearing through customs... I think we were on the proper detour for 20 minutes before we got to get back on the highway. I was so relieved when I was back in familiar territory.

We got to the airport around 3:30 and found the long-term parking garage. Not too bad considering the confusing detour. We then hopped on the train that connects the parking garage to the main airport terminals. Mom said it was our first ride of the trip.

Don't they all look so impressed and wide awake?

Once in the terminal we located the international flight check-in for Air Canada where we found a super long line and absolutely no Air Canada employees to check us all in. What the heck? They said to be at the airport three hours before our flight (6:15) and yet they didn't have any staff there to check us all in???

Eventually one sole Air Canada employee showed up but he wasn't checking people in. Instead, he was going around and answering questions from people in line. We stopped him and asked when they would start the check-in process and that was when he informed us we were in the wrong line. Apparently Air Canada doesn't consider flight to the States as "international" and instead he directed us to a different line that was for flights to the States. That line was just as long as the one we were currently in so no big deal switching over but there still were no employees there to check us all in. The one lonely employee said they would start check-in around 04:15. So we stood around and waited with everybody else and started to get stressed out about the long check-in line and then still needing to get through US Customs and Immigration. Eventually Air Canada employees started to show up around 4:10 but they didn't actually start checking people in until closer to 4:30. There was some entertainment while standing in line. A group of kids in front of us had clearly been learning some anatomy in school as they were talking about all the layers in their body. "I have 5 layers, skin, muscle, bone, etc etc. " Somehow each of them managed to have a different number of layers.

Finally all checked in and almost 05:00 we proceeded to US Customs and Immigration to be met by an even more massive line. First we had to enter our information and scan our passports at kiosks and then we had to take our slips and stand in line to see an immigration officer. There were hundreds of people in line and only 5 officers working. The way they had it set up was there were three sections and each section had its own line. We got directed into the section that had the longest line and only one officer working. I just kept watching the time and it was now 5:30. Our flight was supposed to start boarding at 5:45 and we were nowhere close to the front of the line. One of the line attendants heard me stressing out about missing the flight and let us skip over to the faster line where there were three attendants working. That line moved much faster but we were still in line at 5:45 when our plane started boarding. I swear I was broken out in a sweat at this point as I was so nervous. The only thing that was slightly reassuring was that half our plane was still behind us in line and I tried to reason with myself that the plane wouldn't leave with half its passengers stuck in the immigration line...

Finally we got clear of immigration and were able to drop our checked luggage off. There was an employee there singing as we handed over our bags but I really wasn't in the mood for that at this point. Then it was down an escalator to find our gate. Luckily our gate was the first one we came across and they were still boarding. It was close to the departure time of 6:15 at this point. Reassured that we made our flight I felt slightly better but now I was stressed out that our checked bags wouldn't make it onto the flight since they had just been dropped off. The flight crew at the gate reassured us there would be no problem with our bags arriving...

I plopped down in my seat and was relieved to have made it. I made Alek take a terrible selfie with me to celebrate making the flight.

The flight ended up leaving almost an hour late due to guests being late to get to the plane (through no fault of their own) and then needing to get de-iced. Somehow we still managed to arrive in Orlando on time. Hurrah! The day was looking up!

We all stumbled off the plane exhausted and hungry. No sleep or snacks on the plane sadly.

We made it through the airport very quickly which was a nice surprise after how our travel day had been going so far. I think we were out of there within 30 minutes as I have us arriving at the hotel right around 10:30. Our luggage arrived within just a few short minutes of our own arrival at the luggage carousel. It gave Alek and Erich just enough time to go off to the bathroom and get changed into their shorts. Our day continued to look up as all our luggage arrived. Hurrah!

Next up was a stop at the rental counter to pick up our car for the week. No line! Hurrah! Out to the garage we went where we were shown a variety of full-size cars that we could choose from. I chose a black Camry, we threw our bags in the trunk and away we went!

It should all be smooth sailing from here right? Wrong!

Another highway detour with poor signage. :headache: Luckily we didn't get too lost and we were soon on the turnpike and headed to Disney. The drive was quick and easy after we found the turnpike and we were soon driving through those magical gates.

And then a few minutes later we were at Animal Kingdom Lodge where I gladly told the Security Guard we were checking in!

I opted to park in the parking lot rather than pulling up to the front entrance as I doubted our room would be ready so early in the morning. It was only 10:30 after all, no point dragging the bags out of the car until we could get in the room.

It was so wonderful walking into that beautiful lobby and seeing the magnificent Christmas tree and the garlands strung around the lobby. There was no line at check-in so we were seen right away. Hurrah! And even better, our room was ready! Hurrah again! Mom and I each set up charging on our Magic Bands and then we were off to check out our room. Our room was located on the 4th floor at the VERY END of the right wing. I was very happy with the location despite its distance from the lobby as it was on the same side of the hotel as the pool, Mara and the bus stops.

We each tried our Magic Bands on the room door to make sure they all worked and had no problems.

I loved our room. Very nicely themed and decorated. I had read on the boards that the rooms at AKL are dark but I did not find that at all. I thought that they were very bright. Here are a bunch of room pictures in case you have never seen the rooms here before. I loved the wallpaper in the sink/bathroom area.

The room had lots of storage. Drawers in the tv stand as well as a dresser by the door and a nice sized closet.

The white gauzy curtains were cool and had animal/Lion King characters stitched into them.

Mini-fridge

After checking out the room we opened up the doors to the balcony to check out the savanna and saw.... nothing. That was a little disappointing but the savanna is a large area and we held out hope that some animals would wander over eventually. We actually had a view of two different savannas from our room so we were looking forward to seeing the different animals on the two savannas.

Happy that everything was in order with the room we went back downstairs to grab our luggage from the car. On the way we stopped at the Christmas tree to get our first photopass picture of the trip. We joked about how awful we would look since we had been traveling since midnight and I was the only one of the four of us who had gotten any sleep the day before. I actually don't think they turned out too badly considering...

And that's all for now. Stay tuned for the next update!

Welcome! Thanks for reading. :goodvibes

By any chance are you the same Julie that I used to chat with here on the TR boards a few years ago that moved to Switzerland?

Hi Lessa! Yes, that's me! We are back in the states now. We moved back this summer. I'm planning a trip to WDW for next fall after 4 long years away! We did a few Disneyland Paris trips while we were living in Switzerland, but it just can't compare!

Oh my! Your travel day 'adventures' are giving me anxiety. I would have been a mess dealing with all that on no sleep.

Those AKL rooms are just gorgeous.

For a group of people who traveled all night, your pictures turned out fabulously!

Your flight day is stressing ME out! How crazy to have such long lines and so few people!

This exact same thing happened to my parents on this most recent trip. They got to the check in desk 2 hours before their flight, as instructed...no one there. Eventually an hour before their flight someone showed up! Crazy!

I'm glad the sight of AKL made it all worth it! We're staying there in May and I can't wait!! The resort looks beautiful! And great picture in front of the tree. Even if you all were tired, you look happy!!

Great beginning except the crappy start of long lines and stress of all that! Yikes!

I'm SO glad this TR started out with AKL pix! WE get 3 days there (as you know from my PTR) and just can't get enough of seeing where we actually get to stay!! We won't have any Savannah views, but still so pretty and cool stuff just a short walk away!

Welcome back! I'm very jealous that you got to live in Europe for four years. I am sure you got to see so many beautiful and historic sites.

Disneyland Paris looks so lovely, especially the castle, but I am sure you are right that it is not the same as WDW.

Yes, it was an awful travel experience. I always seem to experience lots of travel hiccups but in the end they all turn out alright.

I loved AKL, a very pretty resort and it was always fun to see the animals from our balcony or to be walking down the hall and glance out the window and see the animals on the different savannas.

We were all baffled by what seemed to be poor planning on the part of Air Canada. We are flying Air Canada when we travel to Turkey in April and I am now dreading that experience.

Yes, our arrival at AKL made it all worth it. You and your boys will love AKL. The pool area is great and they will love running around and seeing all the animals.

You will love AKL Liesa, seems just your style.

Oh my goodness Lessa what a stressful travel day, the diversion sounded bad enough but then the airport stuff :faint:

I'm glad you arrived safely :)
