Wine and Dine 2015

So my next long run is this Monday--14 miles. I was hoping to get in one more long run after that and start the taper two weeks before the W&D, but maybe that's a bad idea and I should start tapering sooner? When are you all starting your tapers? Seems like most of you only have one long run left.

I would stick to your plan. Maybe only 13 miles two weeks before. Four weeks is long for a 1/2 marathon taper. The Galloway, "Time Improvement" plan has us doing 17 miles three weeks out, but we come back a week later with 7 miles at Lactate Threshold (McMillan cruise interval pace); with warm-up and warm-down that's 10 miles or more. If you feel really knackered or your joints and bones are feeling beat up by all means skip a mile here and there. Don't start speed work now if you haven't been doing it all along. It's hard to give advice without knowing what you've done to get to this point.

You guys have given me some awesome advice in the past so I'm hoping you can help me out again. Over the summer from the beginning of July through the end of August I was sick with an upper respiratory infection (it took the doctors that long to identify as something other than "allergies" :sad2:). By the time the doctor finally took my seriously it had gotten to the point that I was coughing 80% of the day and wheezing enough that they gave me an inhaler (in addition to some prednisone).

Since coming back from this icky infection my lungs have just not felt at 100%. I now get an ache in my chest while running and cough a lot after I finish my run. Has anyone else had any experience with this? I still have my inhaler, should I use that?

Have you ruled out heart attack? I wouldn't just continue with an inhaler without a visit to a pulmonary/respiratory specialist. It sounds like exercise induced asthma but...you may want to talk to you doctor about a stress test. I have exercise induced asthma and I use my inhaler when I need to. During last 15 miler I was having an asthma attack which dissipated, without the inhaler, after the first five miles.

As long as the cough doesn't persist, I wouldn't worry about it. It can take a while to totally get over an infection that impacts your lungs or bronchial tubes. I once had bronchitis so bad that I coughed after runs for nearly a year. The infection was totally cleared up (per my doctor), but it took a long time for all of that soft tissue to completely heal.

Now, if you have a cough that starts up even when you have not exerted yourself, or you are experiencing shortness of breath - time to go back to the doctor and make him take you seriously.

While it sounds like your issues are probably due to your illness, I also get a chest ache and a dry cough after finishing runs when it is colder out. I think it's exercise induced asthma, which I used to have an inhaler for during my high school cross country and basketball days, but now as an adult I just live with. :) Like others said, I'd see the doctor though if it persists for a long time after finishing.

Just had to come to my dis peeps and share that I had a MUCH better 11 miler today than 3 weeks ago (ok, it was just shy of 11 but that's ok I could have kept going but DH made me promise not to push it this week and sometimes practicing holding back is just as important for me as I have a tendency to overdo things.) Anyhow- I'm SO relieved. I know ill be able to get thru my last long run before the race in a few weeks and thru wine and dine too barring uncontrolled situations (rolling an ankle or a stomach bug or something like that). I have decided to keep my last long run at 12.5 miles. That's what I've done before and have had success. But I'm going to also stick to my plan of adding two walks to my weekly mileage. Wine and dine 2013 my legs actually hurt on Saturday morning from the walkin around on them at Disney thurs and fri. It seems to happen every trip we take too. It takes a few days for them to adjust. Since I can't avoid all walking (gotta walk to buses, airports, expo etc), my goal is to get my walking muscles used to walking too, plus I've found walking helps with my running in general. I can't always fit it into my schedule but I'm going to make a big effort to do so over the next few weeks.

So excited we are almost there!!!

For those that can see your numbers are you on a laptop or cell?

On my cell that link is only showing the 2014 banner. Nothing else.

On my cell. After a few seconds the panel appears where I put in my name.

This just isn't working for me on my cell. I let it sit for 4 minutes and nothing else appeared. Strange. I will be in a position to be on my laptop in about 5 hours. Have to check again then.
