Wine and Dine 2015

My schedule got a little messed up over the last couple of weeks, partly due to rain, lack of ambition, and 2 races tomorrow. I am running in a 5k tomorrow morning and a 4 mile Wine Run in the evening. I haven't done a long run in 2 weeks, been focusing on speeding up my under 5 mile.

Going to do my 2 races on Satuday and do an easy pace 5 miles on Sunday. Think I am going to do 14 miles on Tuesday and then work my way back into schedule. My biggest problem lately is how dark it is in the morning. I don't live in a subdivision and live on a semi busy, poorly lit road. I have been having my DW drop me off at a trail front on the way to dropping the kids off at school and running the trail until it is light enough to hit the road back towards home. I am so ready for the next 4 weeks to get by!

I'm suppose to be doing 5 this weekend. We will see if I am able to do it since I am still on the mend from food poisoning. Seems like I just can't catch a break this wine and dine.

My training calls for 3.5 this weekend...
But I am going to do a stretching class tomorrow and probably 5-6 on Sunday.

I've been kind of a slacker this week. I did 12.5 on Sunday, and then I went to my spin class on Mon/Wed, but I didn't do either of my maintenance runs on Tues/Thur. Tues I skipped because I was lazy, and yesterday I skipped because we had a vet appointment for our dog, and I am not running on Saturday (5K race on Sunday to take the place of the 4 miler), so I was going to do it this afternoon. But now it's raining! Boo. Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze it in.

What's everyone's weekend running plan look like? I have 3.5 tonight and 10 or so on Sunday.... Ramping back up after a race a few weeks ago. I hope corrals and bibs come out today - I'm getting super excited!

I am supposed to be running a local 5K tomorrow morning and then 15 miles on Sunday. I don't think that's going to pan out, though, because I've been struggling with some heel discomfort the past few days. My plan is to do the 5K and see how I feel Sunday morning. I may scale back the long run to 8-10 miles. I'm not wanting to push things too much this close to the race, and if I can maintain a long run of 10-12 miles for the next few weeks I'll consider myself race-ready.

I've hit this point in my training too... I didn't skip all my weekday runs (yet) but the rain outside is NOT motivating me right now to get my run in tonight. It was beautiful when I left for work this morning but now it's a nasty storm so it will probably be me and treadmill and Alex Trebek (yes, when I have to run in the evenings, sometimes I play along with jeopardy....)

Today's running lesson for me: it is much easier for me to motivate myself to run in the morning than it is to sit here and go through all the stress and drama that creeps up through the day and save some energy for running at night. However, I told myself that I was going to "practice" some night runs this month because of the night race so I'm trying to tell myself it's all part of the training. At least I've taken out my nasty hill-repeats from the summer races I did locally... I'll try to convince myself it's a fair trade. Honestly though my stomach does not feel right today and DS came down with a stomach bug last night so if I do skip tonight, I won't be completely surprised. I just hope the wheels don't completely come off my train if I do.

Advice needed - I see some of you are in the 12.5, or higher long run range for this weekend. Is that just for half training or are you training for a marathon too? I did 11 miles 3 weeks ago, then a 10k race (raced HARD), 8 miles last weekend and was going to do 10.5 this weekend, then 6, 12, 5, and then Wine & Dine. Do you think that's enough? I've never gone past 12 in training for a half before and have finished fine.

You'll be fine. Honestly the Galloway training has people go up to 14 miles before running the 1/2. If you're doing 6, 12, 5, then W&D. That would just be a nice progression of your training. And to me that makes the 1/2 that much nicer. A goal rather than a step down.

Yes, I think if you can hit 12 miles 2 weeks before the race, that's enough. I was trying to do Galloway's plan for improved time, and that plan tops out at 17 miles, which is why I have a 15 mile run scheduled for this weekend. I also did a half two weeks ago, so I was already in the 11 mile range prior to that. Honestly, though, I don't think my body can handle 15 miles at this point. I'm a little bit burnt out and beaten up and I'm afraid trying to do too much in that condition is going to get me injured. At this rate, I'll be satisfied if I can get a comfortable 12 miler in on the 25th.

Well great. Just take ALL my money, Disney. Between this and that $3 increase in parking fees ;) I need a second job.

I LOVE the Alex & Ani wraps. Just got my first one when we were on vacation in New Hampshire and it's quickly become one of my favorite bracelets. Looking forward to adding a couple more!

For me it is just half training. I am doing Galloway's experienced "just to finish" plan and I'm a week ahead of it due to scheduling reasons, so everyone else will be hitting the 12.5 this weekend. I think that you will be fine as long as you hit that 12. I am not planning to do the 14 next week... I'm just going to do 12.5 again. Honestly, I think it's kind of excessive (for me) to go up to 14 (or 17 like the time improvement one has), plus like WDWarchitectureguy said, it makes it a nice goal for the race to do the new distance. :)

I did go up to 13 for Tinker Bell training earlier this year, but that was 6 weeks out from the race. I'm not sure why the Galloway plan was so different for Tink. It had a 13 @ 6 weeks out and 14 @ 3 weeks out, and then the 3 week taper. Anyway, I didn't do the 14 then either... I was planning to do 13 again (saving that 0.1!) but I got a blister and bailed out at 12. I thought that 3 week taper was also a bit excessive, and I'm ending up with one again due to shifting the plan by a week, so I'm going to do a medium long-ish run of like 7-8 near that weekend of the 24th. I have a 5K race on the 24th, which is why I shifted the plan... I'm going to try and do that medium-long run maybe like that Tuesday (27th) in place of the maintenance run.

DW is due to hit 13.1 tomorrow for the first time ever. I must work, so I won't be there when she's done.

I was hoping for 3-4 miles of hill work right after work today, but a severe thunderstorm is upon us with lightning and strong winds. Perhaps after supper. Now I can't eat too much. Then a family walk with Max after work tomorrow. Hoping 12-14 for me on Sunday morning prior to work.

Todays run was scheduled to be 12.5 miles but I was pretty sure going into it I was going to go 13.1. It started sprinkling at 3.98 miles and was pouring by 4 miles. Around six miles my ear bud fell out of one of my ears. I moved my Ipod to my skirt pocket and popped the ear bud back in to find it barely working so I took it out. Due to being water logged my interval timer started continuously vibrating at mile seven, even after turning it off it vibrated the rest of the run. Around mile 9 the rain stopped and I tried my ear bud and it worked. I think that it had been working all long but I had so much rain in my ear that I couldn't hear it. LOL. The finish was great, I yelled when I hit 13.1 (my first ever!) and finished at my car at 13.22 bawling my eyes out. I have spent the last 13 months getting ready for this and I did it.

The real adaption to training is happening at the razor's edge. It's the extra mile every week or that extra 800 every week that causes the body to adapt to greater load. That's where you are likely to get injured too. The body gets tired and "out of position" in those final miles or on the last few reps.

I really like the idea that the 1/2 marathon is going to be a piece of cake compared to the 15-17 miler. I tend to hit a wall in the last few miles of the long run. Having a 17 miler three weeks out should push that possibility, during the W&D, way out of the picture. Then two weeks away from the 1/2, the run-for-time group is doing quality speed work, 14 X 800. That should top off the hematocrit, after a few weeks taper. It's probably the difference between a 2:05 hr.(edit) and 2:00 hr. 1/2 marathon. People shouldn't have any trouble finishing with just a 11 mile long run before the W&D. A bigger question would be, "Are you having fun?"
