We are a couple from Denmark. We are on low income, so we have up to every vacation.
We have a dog.
We have talk about taken the WBTA in 2017 again, and startet to talk with my In-laws about dog sitting. And the answer was:
Why Disney AGAIN? Aren't you to old? Try Thailand next time! It's not normal Christina!
And then I kind of lost it!
Told them that at Disney I can be me. People don't look down at me. I can sing a Disney song when I want. I can dance and enjoy life. I have aspergers, and my "obsession" is Disney.
Your son love Disney as much. Hi is 10 years older than me. Why is am to old?
Then they started talking about other things.
They just don't get it.
Disney is a BIG part of our live.
Other than have families that don't understand?

Yes, I think a lot of us have families that don't understand. I think the whole Disney experience has to be experienced for some to understand.
At first, I got a little offended. Now, I just expect the snide comments and looks of disgust from those family members. I try to smile and ignore them. And because of their attitude, I don't talk to them much about our plans. I ask a neighbor to dog sit and watch our house for us.

Loved Disney since I first saw "Wonderful World of Color" on a friend's grandparents' COLOR TV in 1965! Obsessed with going to Disneyland, but parents said California was too far away from Alabama. Went to Disney World right after it opened, and have been back 8 times since. I too would go every year, but we have to save up for vacations and dear hubby wants other vacation spots sometimes. I have proudly raised two daughters who think Disney is the best, and a son who does not-but after taking him and his family on their first cruise on the Disney Dream in early December, I hope he can feel the love again! And I know at least four other women in my age range (62!) who still love it also! There are LOTS of us out here!

I know that some of our friends shake their heads and don't understand why we "do the same thing" every vacation. One recently said, "well you can only go on a Disney Cruise so many times - come with us to an all-inclusive resort next March". We just politely smile and then book our next Disney Cruise :)

Enjoy your cruise. You are in good company

oh my entire family doesnt "get it". My DH and I are going on an anniversary cruise (our very first and on Disney) in Feb without our two youngest that are still living at home. Then we booked our second cruise for Sept next year for all four of us. My parents are like "what the heck"? They just dont understand and when I vented here months ago I just accept the fact some will just never get it. Im all Disney and I'm taking the cruise because I want to, not because anyone in my family approves or disapproves of it. Just enjoy!

Enjoy your cruise and don't worry about what others think just smile and nod your head. :) :)

You should see the look on people's faces when they come to my house and walk in and see my guest room below. Every wall looks like this, we have a scrapbook page of every Disney vacation since 2005. We only live 5 1/2 hours from DL do there are quite a few long weekends. People think we're nuts, all I know is we are a lot happier than them!

Well, you're inviting them in to make comments by needing their help. If we still had a pet I would board it rather than ask for a favor from people who would comment on my plans.

Unfortunately many people don't get it I am constantly asked "why Disney? why again?"and my answer is always "because I can". I would rather go to a place where they have something for ALL ages and that is familiar to me. I always get my money's worth with Disney and I know my DS will have an amazing time and be treated very well.

I can completely relate, Christina. Like you, I grew up in Denmark. When I was around 10 years old, I remember how excited I was when there was a competition in the Danish Donald Duck comic book to win a trip to Disney World. I was so excited and was imagining how cool it would be. Of course, I didn't win, and there is no way my parents ever would have been able to afford such a trip. 15 years later, I finally got to visit Disneyland when I got to study in the US and attended a conference in Anaheim. The experience was _everything_ that I had fantasized about as a child and so much more. As my signature suggests, I've been going back again and again ever since, whenever there was an opportunity. When I discovered Disney Cruise Line, that was even better!
What I love about Disney is that it is one of precious few places where I experience that beautiful, naive innocence that, I think, most of us tend to lose as we grow up. We tend to get cynical and hard as we become adults, but, at the Disney parks and at DCL, I feel like I am surrounded by other people who treasure the same qualities that I do. Just look at disboards: despite the occasional negativity, it is by far the nicest, kindest internet forum that I have ever come across.
Anyway, thanks for sharing. If more people felt the same, the world would be a much friendlier place. I can't wait to read your TA trip report in 2017 :).

Hugs! I love that you love Disney and that it works so well for you! I feel the same way - at Disney I can be myself. I can be a kid along with my kids and feel carefree and happy :lovestruc

Growing up my Mom couldn't afford a Disney trip. I always watched Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday nights and dreamed of going myself. I have now been to Disney World twice Disneyland once a cruise on the Magic and have a cruise booked on the Wonder for 2/16.Love every minute of it.I know for a lot of people this is not a lot of trips but I travel from upstate NY not easy but worth it.

Hi ChristinaDK!! I have been a Disney lover my whole life and only live 1 1/2 hours by car from Disneyland. I am also a HUGE Denmark fan. Does your family think it's silly to go to Tivoli?? I DREAM of Tivoli to this day and want to go there for Christmas & Halloween holidays. Do they know that Walt Disney created Disneyland after going to Tivoli? It was his inspiration! My whole family loves Disneyland, so I am lucky. My nephew was even conceived at the original Disneyland Hotel !! hahaha   Follow your dreams and always enjoy life! That's what Danes do, right?

If your family wants you to go on a vacation and they are willing to pay for it, go and have a great time on them. If you are paying for the trip you go where and when you choose to go.

Actually Disney Magic and Pixie Dust is the whole product, the superior designed, and built vessels with the classic lines and feel, the art deco and Nuevo deco feel and just enough Disney touches to bring a smile to peoples faces.

A ship crew that is excellent and the best trained and I know that for a fact, because I know all the special training they get on American Maritime schools. Add to that how they have rescued many at sea, including being able to get the rescue boat in the water and save a person who fell off another cruise ship when the other cruise ship could not even get their boat in the water.

Their own special designed terminal and Bus service where the magic begins with videos on what's coming and Disney cartoons.

The excellent service,, yes other lines may have great service, but twisting that into saying its Disney Pixie Dust, doesn't work, Add great food and good family entertainment. The DISNEY characters that bring joy to the kids, young and old. Mickey and Minnie. Things like Animators Pallet MDR, food and mixers events and that is just starters.

One of my thing was we were taken the design of the Magic tour, (which by itself is a great tour) when Belle came around the corner and a young girl on the tour with her MOM, just cried out in joy. Belle spun around, flopped down onto the deck, lifted the girl into lap and calmed her down. She finally told the child that if she was at a door down the passageway at 1830, she could walk with Belle to a greeting session. Mom nodded ok, Belle got up waved good bye and I would bet a week pay that child was at the door at 1830 and had a memory that would last a lifetime.

The bottom line is the Disney cruises are special with real Disney Magic and Pixie dust only found on their ships.

What ever happens ..enjoy your trip!

My family is kind of the same way. Just had this conversation at our house:

Me to dh: When (one sister) says she's going to Iceland, I say 'Have fun!'
When (another sister) says she's going to Jamaica, I say 'Have fun!'
When (multiple family members) say they are going to go anywhere, I say 'Have fun!'
etc, etc
When I tell them I am going to WDW or Universal, they say, 'No, don't go!'

My 8 year old: Maybe you should start telling them not to go on their trips.

Soooo frustrating. My family, my money. Thinking I should start telling them about trips after the fact.

That said, a bunch of them went to WDW recently and loved it, and one of them joined us at Universal and loved it, and now 24 of us are all doing DCL together so maybe they will start to understand it more.
