UK Newspaper The Independent has revealed in a story today that Ellen DeGeneres has hinted hinting that the upcoming Finding Nemo sequel Finding Dory will deal with the effects of keeping fish in captivity.

Following The Blackfish documentary - Filmmakers are queuing up to take shots at SeaWorld and its business model.

Now I realise that many believe that Blackfish was purely a piece of well stage managed propaganda, and others believe it was an accurate portrayal of SeaWorld's practices and impact.

I am going to sit on the fence on that one - I have not seen Blackfish - and cannot comment or pass opinion. I have visited Seaworld, and have enjoyed it immensely - although I suppose I have recently begun to wonder whether I would return based on some of these kind of questions

More interestingly though, is the idea of kicking another theme park when its down a clever move by Disney to retain market share? - or is just a case of one it's stars just sound-biting without thinking of the bigger picture? or more likely perhaps, a national newspaper trying to dramatise a tenuous connection.

anyway the full article is here

I doubt they will name check Seaworld itself. It's more likely that the antagonists of the movie will be a group of humans who mistreat or harm fish in order to make money generally.

I posted this in the thread that disappeared yesterday, but IMO this makes Disney the biggest hypocrites. They are responsible for multiple deaths of Dolphins in captivity and still to this day hold dolphins in a a tank where they get no exposure to fresh air/light. They also keep animals at AK in captivity that have habitats in the wild that are significantly larger then the miniscule area they have in comparison at AK similar to what people complain about being done to the Orcas at SeaWorld. Sorry you are either against animals in captivity or not. I don't get why marine mammals get all of the outrage while giraffes and elephants are being subjected to the exact same treatment and suffer significantly in captivity.

And FTR I am not anti SeaWorld, Epcot or AK I just find it funny people get all up in arms about them but support Disney who isn't any better. The fact the Ellen whom I love can't see the hypocrisy in her message is unfortunate. Maybe she doesn't realize that the company she is working with is just as guilty.

Yeah I can't see Disney doing that. Seaworld is a theme park. Disney is in the theme park business. Disney owns two theme parks that have animals in captivity. Epcot has one of the largest tanks in the world with sea life from all over the world. AK is the best themed zoo in the world.

I agree that based on Ellen's statements, it doesn't sound like the film's message will be anti-SeaWorld so much as pro-natural habitat. Like it was said above, Disney is hardly in a position to criticize SeaWorld over allegations that have been questioned by many.

Quoting the article: "I think that fish should be in the ocean," DeGeneres, who voices Dory, told Yahoo!, "which is what this whole sequel is about: rehabilitation and putting them back in the ocean… And we have to protect our oceans."

She may have said more, but that to me just doesn't sound like taking a jab at SeaWorld. Now, if they have a theme park in the movie called OceanPlanet it's safe to say Disney has no chill.

I like Ellen but I'm not wild about this. I don't know how much of this Disney is behind but I'll likely give this movie a pass.

This doesn't sound like a Disney takes a swipe at another theme park thing. Think about the plot of Nemo after all. Aren't those fish in captivity who then escape back to where they belong? It's more of the same with a different setting.

If Disney/Pixar is going to start beating that (or any other) political/politically correct drum then this will be the first Pixar movie I skip. Animals that are treated well in captivity serve a lot of good purposes besides entertainment. Does anyone really think the public would have forced dolphin safe tuna fishing practices had it not been for horrible places like sea world and disgusting TV shows like Flipper? On a more general note, I am really tired of listening to celebrities who generally have the brains of a turnip telling people what they should think or how they should act.

When a celebrity uses their fame/power to forward an 'opinion' steeped in pseudoscience or ignorance (think Jenny McCarthy's anti-vax antics), and a large amount of people begin to see that opinion as fact, THEN it becomes an issue.

Pseudoscience is always a problem, but I don't actually find Jenny McCarthy's nonsense any more harmful than the huge numbers of people on social media and the internet in general who are propagating it. As the father of a child with Aspergers I have lost count of the number of times discussions on that topic have ended with the anti-vaxxer dismissing actual research with "well that's your opinion" and then proceed to spout their nonsense at everyone who will listen. There's no separate rule for celebrities and there shouldn't be.

All that said I don't think the linked piece remotely fits that criteria anyway.

I'll reserve judgement until I see the movie. I really wish they would leave politics and controversial social issues out of children/family movies and tv shows. I was watching Girl Meets World the other day (spoilers ahead) and the subplot revolved around Eric, a senator meeting with someone from an "evil" company trying to get money from him. Eric's dialogue is clearly aimed at convincing man made global warming is real/serious and anyone who doesn't believe that is evil.

I love the show, but don't use one of BMW's most beloved characters to promote an agenda. How would people feel if instead the same thing was done to convince kids that gay marriage or abortion weren't ok?

This is probably too serious of a topic for this forum. I'm not taking a political position. I just don't think Disney or any family shows should be used as a platform for political issues.

I wonder how many poor little Clown Fish suffered and died in improperly set up aquariums after the first movie. Now it will be poor little Blue Tangs...

I don't think this will be an issue for the Blue Tang population. As a marine/reef tank enthusiast I can tell you that Blue Tangs are very expensive fish to purchase and will only survive in 50 gal tanks or larger. Most marine fish providers would be very reluctant to sell a Blue Tang to someone with only a 10-30 gal. tank...they consider themselves conservators of marine life and many reef corals are being saved from extinction by the reef tank hobbyists and are helping to repopulate marine reefs.

My first thought was, "If that's the message of the film, then Disney had better close The Seas with Nemo and Friends." But Eoghann strikes me as 100% correct. The plot of the original Finding Nemo was poor fish captured by humans are returned to their rightful habitat, which is just as easily an anti-Sea World (or any place that keeps sea life) message as whatever the sequel contains. Through the right eyes, pretty much any kids movie about animals is an animal rights movie. Bambi = hunters killed my family. Dumbo = circus took me from my mom after mean boys abused me. Etc.
