Marathon Weekend 2016

Me too! I really enjoyed being at POFQ last year. Smaller resort. I don't think I ever saw bus lines that were long. It was nice.

Yes! The smaller resort is exactly why I chose POFQ again. It was between this and CBR and I decided to go with POFQ because I heard that CBR is much much more spread out. Also, you are absolutely right about the bus lines. I was able to roll right outta bed and onto a bus

You are correct, CBR (and CSR for that matter) are huge compared to POFQ. I will be staying at POFQ, as well. If you really want to get into the weeds with details, try to get a room in Building 4 of POFQ. It's right in the sweet spot with great access to both the bus stop and food court.

My husband and I are both registered for the half during Marathon weekend and the Rebel Challenge the following weekend. I am looking for some help with the training plan. Currently we intend to follow the published Galloway plan for the Rebel Challenge since it makes accommodations for the back to back runs. My concern is that the plan has us doing a 14 mile run the Sunday (1/3) before marathon weekend.
Would you cut that back a bit taking into consideration that we are doing the half on 1/7? This is not a first half marathon for either one of us and we both have several years of off and on running (stopped only due to knee surgery) under our belts. I know there is a debate on how much taper is really recommended for a half, but is a 14 miler 6 days before the event asking for trouble?

Side note, we are also considering Port Orleans for our stay in January...maybe we will see some of you all around! :)

The thread and independent website on the Port Orleans resorts are great. I want to stay there so badly. I wish it was DVC! Ha. http://www.portorleans.org
Last two trips we stayed at POR including marathon weekend. I have fallen in love with that resort. This trip I am staying deluxe for the first time but I will definitely be back to POR. I haven't stayed at POFQ for a long time but I may have to stay there again soon too.

We are staying at POFQ as well for the half (both DW and myself). We also picked it for the small size and ease of getting around - hope to see everyone there!

Has anyone worn athletic toe socks. I've never even worn regular toe socks but I can see where this could benefit the feet and toes from blisters and possible hot spots.

I only wear Injinji's and LOVE THEM. I have a weird toe issue where my outer toes curl under the toes next to them resulting in small cuts from the nail going into the skin, Injinji's solved this problem for me. I will say they do take some getting used to if you are not used to them but after that they are awesome

It really depends on your fitness level and how hard you want to push during the actual races, I would recommend cutting it back to maybe a 10 miler, that way you are still getting a good long run under you but not totally exhausting yourself, I know the plan I followed before my first half had me running a 10 miler the week before the race

As for running a 14 miler a week before a race- depends is my answer..

My current PR is a 10 miler I ran 6-7 days after the princess half last year.. My fav race company launched a new race after I registered for princess so I double dipped closer than I usual.. I ran an easy 2 miles mid week then had planning to run the 10 easy but had a fantastic run instead..

Looks like we'll all be at POFQ! We're there for now unless we can snag a discount later for a deluxe.

Unrelated question: how do I set up an alert on run keeper to do a 1:1 run walk interval for training... Or is that not possible

Thought it should quit lurking and introduce myself. Registered for the full, my first ever. Done a fair number of local HM, so I feel good about the decision to jump to full, but its still a bit nerve wracking to think about that distance.

DH is doing his first HM at Disney too. Will be our first trip to Disney sans kids since we were therer and got engaged 15 years ago. Staying at POFQ. We rend to stay at POR with kids.

Booked a couple dinners already. Trattoria on Friday, Boathouse Sat to celebrate DH's HM, and Sanaa on Sun for me. Post run on Sun we plan to hit Trader Sams and continue the drinking in Epcot.

We're flying in early Thur for expo and heading to Universal on Fri for all the HP things. I think the only thing left to book is airfarw. Waiting for (hopefully) rates to go down.

Glad to be joining you all on this adventure!

Thanks to Neoflynn and Disneyland Emily for weighing in on the 14 miler. It seems pretty daunting to do 14 on 1/3 as a training run, do the half on 1/9 in Florida and not be totally spent when we arrive in California for the Rebel Challenge 1/16 and 17. Cutting it to 10 is probably our best bet. The plan we are following does take us up to 12.5 prior to then. We have already begun training for our proof of time 10 miler in September and plan on jumping right into the Galloway plan after that.
I did the 2012 Wine and Dine 2 weeks after the Marine Corps Marathon, but spent the 2 weeks in between doing very little. I probably didn't run more than 3 miles in the time in between. This will be the closest I have ever grouped long distance events. I don't know how people participate in Goofy or Dopey!
Thanks again for the input!

Welcome to the forums. If you are nervous about the full, after having done halfs, I should be terrified because I jumped right into the Dopey after having only done a couple of 5ks...haha, I'm gonna be in pain!

One other factor to consider - which race will you push you hardest in? If you think the WDW HM will be the one, I'd do like an 8 miler the weekend before. If the Rebel challenge HM is likely to be the one, then do do an easy 8-10 miles the week prior to WDW Marathon weekend.

If I were in you shoes, I'd cut the training run down to an easy 8-10 miles, taper and push myself at WDW Marathon weekend, recover during the week leading up to the Rebel challenge and run by feeling the mornings of the 10k and HM.

Great race for your first marathon! Don't let the distance intimidate, if you can run halfs and you are training you will make the distance. Good luck to you and to your DH on his first half! Welcome to the board.

Here is what I do in RunKeeper to set up intervals (I only know the iPhone app by the way. I'm not sure if it's different):

  • On the 'Start' tab: at the top you can change type of workout and the actual workout. Select whatever is in your workout box
  • At the bottom there should be some "saved" workouts; select any of these and you can modify them
  • Click edit at the top right and you can modify the Workout details.
  • I changed mine to 1:00 steady, 1:00 minute slow. You can delete or add any details that you want.
  • I just put the two and then on "repeat" open selected "unitl I stop my activity"
  • Hit save at the top right.
  • Now you can select this workout
  • You will get audio cues at each workout interval
