Marathon Weekend 2016

As for No. 2, I have pretty sensitive skin and am like a magnet for Mosquitos - this is the repellent I use when I run. It works pretty well and it doesn't make me feel grimey or anything after I run, especially when layered with sunscreen. I got it at Target. Don't remember how much it was, but it wasn't expensive enough that I would remember the cost.

Thanks! I'll be on the lookout for it next time I'm at Target (I've been meaning to head back there for other stuff anyway).

Bodyglide is a must for me on long runs,I have used Goldbond friction defense in the past which is available at Walgreens.I can't say that it's not as good as Bodyglide but I usually just go with Bodyglide since its the best known brand and I've never had an issue using it.It is like $2-$3 more than the Goldbond product but since I only wear them for longer runs its not like I have to buy it that often.Bodyglide used to be harder to find, like Sports Authority only had it occasionally but I think the product has gotten popular enough that they always have it now.Runner stores also carry it so it's not that hard to find.

Thanks! There isn't really a running store close enough to me to go regularly, so I'd rather get something I can find anywhere ... maybe I'll pick up the Gold Bond stuff for now and I can get Body Glide next time I'm near a running store.

I use Gold Bond Stick. But Amazon might carry bodyglide.

As for the bug spray, I am the same, I break out in a rash with most ones. I started making my own bug spray with essential oils. I have had great success even with living in FL.

Thanks! I may try making my own spray if I can't find anything I like ... but buying something is definitely easier for me.

I started using Body Glide this year only on long runs.

I have had no luck with big spray. I use it but I still get attacked on humid days. I think I use Off Active. It is an orange can. I don't feel slimy or anything and I don't really get any bites to speak of but I am still hammered by the bugs. I don't know if this helps or not.

Hi I have a spectator question. If I'm running the 10K and my husband want to cheer me on but not leave with me on the 3:30 bus, how close to 5 am does the last bus before the break leave? If he can get another hour of sleep, it might be best for everyone. Also, is there any where open to get coffee for spectators during the 10K or the half?

Thirding/fourthing body glide! I believe I bought mine on Amazon, but running or sporting goods stores usually carry it.

Anthem is supposedly buying Cigna for $54 billion. If it goes through will Anthem be the new Marathon Weekend sponsor?

Also running related question. Being a high school athlete and one that plays football, our season is starting in a little over a week. School won't start until September but when it does I may be in a training bind. I'll have school from 7:45 in the morning until 3 and then football practice from 3:30 to about 7. Running after practice could be an option but I would need to eat something before running because I wouldn't have eaten anything since lunch time during the school day. I'll also probably be quite tired from practice as well. And by the time I would start running after practice it would be dark out so that's why I'm kind of like what do I do. I kind of had the same problem last year with the 10k and it worked out but that training wasn't as rigorous as half training will be. We will likely do some type of conditioning at practice every day as well.

The deal won't close for a while, so it won't affect 2016 marathon, but ... it'll be interesting to see if Anthem maintains the sponsorship or if Disney will have to find a new sponsor.

So, I have two slightly tangentially related to running issues, and I'm hoping my more experience runners can offer some advice:

1 - I had my first chafing problem today. It was from a pair of capris I don't wear so often, so I'm okay with limiting them to short runs only (today was a 5.5 mile/69 minute run), but in case I do want to wear them for a long run (or I have this issue with other things) ... is Body Glide the way to go? Does anyone have a different preferred product (like one I could get at my local drugstore)?

TIA!
Like everyone says BodyGlide is great. You can get it at sporting goods stores like Dicks Sporting Goods and Bike shops like performance carry it too. I also use the 2toms sport shield. It's a liquid roll on which you can get at amazon. Because it's a liquid it means you can leave it in your gym bag in a hot car and not have it ruined. Melted body glide can make quite a mess. Both are also available at running warehouse online.

Thanks! My room (where I store everything I own) gets pretty hot sometimes and I've had melted stuff issues occasionally, so having something that doesn't melt might be a nice option!

My preference is 2 Toms roll-on. IDK know readily available it is in stores, but I get it via runningwarehose.com - free 2-day shipping.

2 - I have three bug bites from my Tuesday AM run. I hate mosquitoes, they love me. What bug repellent do people use while running? Last time I tried OFF bug spray (which, granted, was over 10 years ago), I was a little allergic, but I'm willing to try it again if that's what people recommend (my strange allergies aren't quite as bad as they used to be, so I might be okay with it now). Is bug spray the way to go or do people prefer something else (citronella bracelets or anything like that)?
I'm a magnet for mosquitoes, and run in an area that's basically swamp at this time of year, but I've never been bit while running. I just don't think they have a chance to land while I'm in motion, right? So I take measure to avoid being bitten while not actively running, because we have a host of really, really bad diseases being spread by mosquitoes down here: I do all my getting ready, warming up, stretching, etc. indoors; ditto for all post-run stretching, dealing with devices, etc. So the only time I'm out where they are is while I'm actively running/walking. Seems to work!

Thanks - I'll look into it.

I think I'm slow enough that the mosquitoes can catch me. So I don't know that this would work for me ... but it's an interesting approach!

I have large thighs from years of weight lifting. The only thing that helps me with chafing is compression shorts. Honestly, I would have to pick between weight lifting and running if not for this amazing invention.

I sweat off whatever I put on as bug repellant, so no help there. I just suffer through it and try not to scratch. What really gets me are the biting flies. I had a knot on my head for 2 days from a bite on Monday. >:(

I was in line at an expo and saw a stand with both regular body glide and a pink "women's body glide", the line moved too fast for me to actually look at it further but I do remember wondering if it really was different or just a pink package. It looked like maybe the actual product had a pinkish color too.
Just a marketing thing or really a difference??

Just marketing as far as I know. :rolleyes2

Does anyone know when the marathon sold out last year? I see it's currently at 84% - I'm hoping to sign up and make this my first full marathon, but due to some travel constraints with my work, I won't know if I can do the race until mid- to late September.

Also, does anyone remember if/when rD offered a discount on the marathon registration fees last fall? I remember seeing something where they released some extra Goofy entries late in the fall, and it seems like they also dropped the marathon registration fee at some point but I don't remember.

Last year with the original marathon entries it did sell out early May, but it never really sold out after they released the Goofy entries to it I don't think. They just put it as Sold out because they were only leaving it open for so many days with the extra entries. It's hard to know if/when it will sell out if at all this year. I wouldn't count on them discounting the price, if they did anything they would roll it back to the original price for price increase dates maybe.
