Looks like some nice upgrades to an already very nice ride.

I hope they didn't go over-the-top with hi tech upgrades though, because to me a large part of the charm is the 1950s theatrical stage-set appearance of much of the ride. I can't put my finger on it, but the scenery and figures at WDW's Pan have an appearance of being made with wood and canvas and painted with flat stage paint and lit with incandescent and UV lighting effects. Modern rides give a look and feel of PVC plastic, LED lights and video screens that if overdone will take you out of the feeling of being in a 1910s story (or whenever Peter Pan was set) and into a video game.

All the upgrades are pretty tasteful in my opinion. BTMRR and Alice in Wonderland received the most new effects, but they managed to keep the classic feel while making it fresh and exciting at the same time.

I agree...when the Little Mermaid attraction opened in Fantasyland, I was very disappointed...it all looks like plastic.

Well, I think it is plastic. Some sort of latex is being used on some of the new animatronics to get a more realistic/fluid movement. I assume Imagineers weren't happy with the result, because it seems like projection mapping is the future for AA's faces.

EDIT: Btw, according to Disney and More, new animatronics with projected faces were planned for this refurbishment, but apparently they were cancelled because projection mapping produces too much light, which would've interfered with the ride's dark nature.

This is the former jack sparrow attraction. Disney did nothing to the space and just added some benches and is calling it a lounge.

Well, I guess I prefer to sit in an air conditioned space, in what looks like a dark, non-descript room over standing and watching that horrible Jack Sparrow atrocity!

Just going to drop this in here.

Sources say the budget is around 3 billion. The majority will be for DHS but small amounts will given to Epcot and MK.

Jim Hill's latest podcast musings
AK
6-800 million for avatar
Avatar boat ride will be like no disney boat ride before
DHS
Plan to at some point to change the Chinese theater but has been pushed back
Pieces of cars land, toy story play land, and bugs life will come to DHS
indoor RSR coming to DHS
Star Wars 5 years away
Disney Hollywood Adventure maybe won't be the name
D23
There will be a toy story day, theme parks day, and star wars day
Pixar announcement for DHS
vague Star Wars announcement, not really telling us anything

**Typical Jim Hill disclaimer**

That budget at for WDW is going to be 3 billion+ but under 4 billion it seems. Reminder small amounts will go to MK and Epcot as well. Also DHS will get several infrastructure upgrades that is included in that budget, such as parking improvements.

The amount of the budget going to epcot is enough to spruce up or fix a couple of the unused or underused pavilions.

I'm pleased about the Avatar boat ride news (or rumor). I hope that it's a nice long ride on the scale of Splash Mountain or BTMRR, and not short like 7DMT.

The DHS news sounds disturbingly vague and long-term. Bug's Life? Not a classic.

I'll listen to the podcast myself ... this is all second-hand (or third-hand) and based on a lot of rumors and speculation but other than the numbers being tossed around like "3 billion" I'm not seeing solid evidence of lavish funding for groundbreaking new rides. I hope that I am surprised to the upside ...

It seems that while they may have regretted avatar they are definitely not taking any short cuts with it. I'm very excited to see it.

The 3 billion is basically the biggest item that has been confirmed or said by multiple people to be right. Everything else hasn't leaked or got out yet.

They certainly regret that they signed this deal with James Cameron, which supposedly fifty years from now will be the sequel to Saving Mr. Banks given how it has gone at times, and especially considering that within eighteen months, they had Star Wars in their hands.

But, that's only hindsight. And both lands will be great.
