I'm in line at Costco and I'm on my phone looking at all the shaming i'm getting in the meat thread lol when I notice I'm not moving...

Odd...so I hear the grunts of everyone behind me going Oh come on...so I look up. This lady was paying $45.00 with a check...the person didn't know how to operate it, and a supervisor had to come over.

It just made me think...wow in 2015 people still pay with CHECKS!? She wasn't older either she was maybe around 45/50?

Here me out - I personally didn't care, but it just made me go wow I didn't know this archaic system still existed!

I worked in a bank, and when I would just ask people when ordering checks if they tried online banking a lot of people were always concerned about privacy/electronic hackers...which always had me reply to them:

"You're giving someone a hard copy of your Address, Name, Signature and account/routing number...how is that more safe"

Maybe it's ME who doesn't know the benefits to paying with checks

Do you guys still pay at STORES with checks?

P.S. THIS IS NOT THE LADY - just an image of someone doing so.

I still pay with checks. It just helps me to keep my finances straighter. It would be way too easy for me to over spend if I just had to swipe a card. I know everyone moans when the person writing the check holds the line up but I have been behind plenty of people using their debit cards or even credit cards that hold the lines up because they can't remember their pin number or the transaction won't go through. Don't be a check hater...there may be a reason behind the use :scratchin Ohhhh and don't get me started on those people with the coupon briefcases :rotfl:

Nope but in my community there are always people at the grocery store paying with check.

No, personally I don't. However, if you are shopping for a small business or organization, I can see where you might have to. Some won't give out the business debit card to employees/volunteers, but they are willing to give a check if it's made out to the company the individual is going to shop at.

I'd be more annoyed about the untrained cashier than the person using a check.

Only place I use one is when I get my hair cut. Otherwise cash or CC. I do not have & will NOT use a debit card.

I actually don't think I've ever paid by check in a store. I'm pretty sure I used to mail them in to pay bills back in the day, but I don't think I ever used them for regular purchases.

OP you are posting cranky threads lately .... you are too young to let so many things bother you :chat:

To answer your question, it has been years since I wrote a check in a store. I do still write a few each month for small businesses or professionals I deal with that don't take credit cards or PayPal or anything other than a check or cash.

Depends on the store. Sam's Club won't take my credit card, so I write a check. I pay all my bills via check, except those that'll take a credit card. It just works better for me this way. I don't have/use/want a debit card, so if a place won't take my credit card, I write a check. If you can't be patient waiting in line for the 3 minutes it takes to write a check, you are going to be facing a LOT of frustration in a LOT of places. Patiently waiting is a skill we've let languish. Sad that people are so short-tempered over having to spend an extra 3 minutes in line (looking at their phones?).

Listen, I'm almost 30, I'm on THE EDGE! I will now be buying your HALF ALIVE steak with a check also :badpc:

Costco only accepts AMEX, so I'm forced to pay with a check or cash. It's not really a big deal. All you do is sign it and they run it through the machine. Takes two seconds.

Costco takes VISA or MASTERCARD with a Pin number aka Debit Card too.

I don't use debit cards. Costco is literally the only place I'm forced to use cash or check, so it's not big deal for me to write a check like 4 times a year.

AMEX is no longer going to have an exclusive contract with Costco, btw. Starting in 2016, CitiVisa will be their exclusive provider.

Indeed. I don't use checks, but they are a legitimate form of payment. The cashier should have known how to process them.

Yes, I guess I'm an odd ball If I don't pay with checks, I forget to write it down. Thank God for duplicates. Most places I shop and use checks can print the checks so it takes almost no time. What takes time for me is trying to decide which way to swipe the card.

I have, I generally use cash or CC but some places like Sams club don't take visa, so most of the time cash but if it's a large purchase, say a TV, I'll use a check at Sams. Like previously stated I also will sometimes use a check when buying things for our business. Not a lot but it does happen.
