starting school before labor day

just a heads up for anyone in new York school will start before labor day this year. the reason is because of the state exams in june have been moved up a week. I feel bad for people that planned vacation's already. what makes me mad as a teacher is we will be in school for two day's and then have a four day weekend for labor day it's so stupid. but now we will get a full week off in feb for president's week instead of just one day.

For the past 9 years we have gone back the Tuesday Labor Day then had Friday/Monday off. I grew up in NH but we always had a full week of vacation President's week starting after Labor Day and MA has since I lived here. Also since Labor Day is so late this year I would have thought that was a real possibility. Our city hasn't officially decided yet between the Tuesday before Labor Day (Sept 1st?) or the last Tuesday in August when we always start.

My kids' schools always started the Thursday before Labor Day weekend. It just sucked. I don't know why they felt the need to go to school two days then take a 3 day weekend. Makes it impossible to take a vacation over that holiday without the kids missing out on the first days of school.

that is going to be the big issue here since most people have already booked their summer vacations. this is going to hurt a lot of local beaches now

We are in the midwest as well. We usually start about then as well.

Not sure where you are in NY, but I'm in NYC and we most definitely will not start before Labor Day. As a matter of fact, we don't start until Sept 9th, and have 4 school days off for religious observances in September. They don't even have a full week of school in the month of September!

This happened to us. Vacation has been booked since November for the week before Labor Day and the school board just voted through the calendar to start Sept 2nd. They had a calendar that started after Labor Day all set to go, but they decided last minute that they needed December 23rd off and the day after Easter. We don't have the day after Easter off this year, so I'm not sure why next year is different. And I have to agree that going to school 2 days then having 4 days off is just dumb. That's how our calendar is too.

Wow I just looked at the NYC school calendar.. It seems really odd, only Good Friday off for Easter and then a random week off for Spring Break a month later??

I am in upstate NY and while I asked several times- the calendar was only recently published. I had already booked our annual trip and so my DD will miss 3 full days because of going back before Labor Day. It is what it is, thankfully it is just 4th grade.

I am in upstate NY and while I asked several times- the calendar was only recently published. I had already booked our annual trip and so my DD will miss 3 full days because of going back before Labor Day. It is what it is, thankfully it is just 4th grade.

we are just south of Albany I think this entire thing is stupid all because they want to start the state test's a week early. very strange that nyc schools are going back so late and don't have easter off

We start on September 8th. We have never started before Labor Day. We always have a week off for President's day. This is going back to the 70's, that I can remember.

My kids have off Sept. 14, 15 and 23 for Jewish holidays.

In 2016, Easter and Passover do not fall together, so we don't have a full week off. We have a long weekend in March for Easter and a long weekend in April for Passover. I would assume the dates are similar with the NYC school schedule.

I just checked, and ours has recently been posted on the website - with no fanfare that I know of.

Teachers go back for PD on 9/1, and students start after Labor Day on 9/8.

Our last day next year will be 6/24 (with 5 built-in snow days).

Our district has only recently gone to starting after Labor Day. When DS was little, he used to start the Tuesday before. But I do remember starting the Wednesday after Labor Day when I was a kid (different state).

Yes, I work in NYC and live in the suburbs. MY kids go back before after labor day and I go back after labor day. I can actually take my kids to their 1st day of school for once. NYC is not off for Easter, we are off for Good Friday and Passover. They usually coincide but not next year.

Way back when I was in elementary school, we usually started school on a Wednesday or Thursday. I think the teachers actually liked that because they could get the class organized, do all of the start of the school administration stuff, collecting forms, going over class rules, etc. and then, when school started back up on Tuesday after Labor Day, they were able to go full force and start in with the academic stuff. It gave the kids a couple days to get back into the swing of school too.
