A Sickie, 3 Hotels, 6 Parks, Boyfriend Drama and Fun Galore:

A few updates behind, so going back...

I love the picture of your mom smiling with the Minnie ears! Looks like she's having a great time. I was just telling my DH how cool it is that you brought your mom to WDW and how much fun she had (we've had several grandparents with Alzheimer's).

Fun that Morgan built a lightsaber! Dug did that for Izzy on her first trip and she was just battling him with it the other day. Fun souvenir!

Sorry your mom didn't want to do Test Track. Glad the rest of the morning went pretty well, though. What fun to ride a loop on the monorail and check everything out!

My mom is usually so easy to travel with and a lot of fun!! She loves Morgan and Morgan is very good with her.

Remember the title of my report. You will hear more about this light saber

It was a lot of fun!!

January 6- The Future, the Epic Push, and Wanyama-Boyfriend Drama Begins

After the morning in Future World of Epcot, The Epic pushing of the wheelchair to take the bucket list Monorail ride around the Resort Loop and Check out the hotels near the Magic Kingdom, we were ready to rest and get ready for what we thought would be a highlight of the trip. We left Kidani at about 3:15 pm and found handicapped parking then went into AKL. We were sent to Jiko to the wine room to check in and then went into the wine room and met a chef and hostess that showed our group of 11 the snacks that were prepared. This time was not structured but very informal as we introduced ourselves to each other and the cultural representatives talked about where they were from and what we would be experiencing this afternoon/evening.

We had great snacks in a beautiful setting and met great people. The group for the Wanyama Safari is limited to 12 people. Our group was 11. We were three of the 11. There were two other families. One was a young man in his early thirties probably and his girlfriend and his mother. I think they were from California and he had done the Safari before. The other family was from New York I think. The man was an attorney and his wife and three young adult children. The oldest was maybe 24 and a 21 or 22 year old set of twins a young man and sister. Morgan loved this group. I was more the age of the parents of this family and the mother from California was probably 60 maybe. This was a great group to meet and spend an afternoon/evening with.

Morgan loved the Boar sausage and said it was great. With the snacks we were served tea or water and maybe lemonade.[/URL

My plate of snacks.

I will say that we did not take many food pictures so I will tell you about the menu when I get there and do a review of dinner.

After our snacks, we met Dan the animal keeper that would be our guide for the safari. We were given a break to go to the bathroom and then taken to the front of the hotel where we boarded a safari truck. They do have a ramp so this is an accessible activity. Mom chose to take her can and use the steps to get into the truck. There were benches to sit on although we did not sit very long. I don’t remember the name of the animal keeper who drove the truck. Dan told us about the savannahs around Animal Kingdom Lodge and Kidani village. We were told about the conservation efforts and about the animals on the savannahs. We had wonderful views of the hotels, the savannahs and the animals and foliage on the savannahs.

We saw many beautiful animals in a beautiful setting.

The views of AKL and Kidani were wonderful. The information about how the savannahs are kept looking so great in spite of the animals and even disaster such as fire and hurricanes were discussed. How did Disney design such an interactive resort with all the necessary details? [/URL

These are animals-wild animals-some were born in captivity and others have come from different places. We really did get this close. The nice thing about only having 11 of us and our guide/host. We had time to take pictures and were parked for safety and photo ops as well as being able to observe the animals in their environments

Now remember me saying boyfriend troubles in the title of this trip report? Well, who do you think on a Tuesday night has boyfriend troubles? Me? No boyfriend. Can’t be me…no boyfriend, no troubles!! Morgan? Yes, she has a boyfriend she left in Norfolk on the 9th of December. Nothing going on there we know about. Mom? A boyfriend?!? It would appear so as of Tuesday January 6, 2015. His name is Gordon. He is tall. Taller than Mom’s 6 ft. 1-2 in brothers. Man he is tall. And he really must have wanted to kiss her.

Another shot…what a long neck you have Gordon!

Gordon is the young male that will probably be used for breeding the giraffe herd for WDW. He is known as a “trouble maker” or known for his antics. He is getting too friendly with the safari trucks when they come around the savannah. I learned a lot about what the animal keeper do and responsibilities when on the safari with guests. They also have input on what might come to the savannahs in the future and opportunities for guests. They are working on interaction with the giraffes. I do know that when Dan shouted move when Gordon came towards Mom, Mom moved the fasted she could in the space 12 adults were in. We were trying to get to and out of the gate that you see him in front of. There are several giraffes in the savannahs at Kidani and AKL.

As you will be able to see the giraffes is no small animal. I think Dan said he was 6’3”. He was not a small man. I have included pics with Dan just so you can get an idea of Gordon and the other animal’s sizes.

Part 2 of Wanyama Safari up next

sounds like a good day at the studios - glad that Morgan got the Star Wars gifts for her boyfriend and friend like she wanted

I am going to say this with the chance of not making friends on the DIS. I really like DL version better
- so I haven't seen the DL version yet (we are going for the first time in October) but from what I am reading, the general consensus is that the DL version is better - so I don't think you have to worry about people hating on that statement.

Also sounds like a nice morning at EPCOT - and way to get there so early! It's always fun to take the resort monotrail loop and just take your time and check the resorts out. Kinda odd with regards to the inconsistencies with the elevators though :confused3

That safari tour sounds great! Nice food to start and how nice to have such a small group so you really get to ask the questions you want and get the pictures you want.

That was quite the anmal encounter you had though!

Oh, wow, fun safari! We once did a backstage safari at Animal Kingdom (the park, so different than this) and it was really awesome to be in a small vehicle and have a knowledgable CM with us and stop for pictures and such. Glad you got to do this!

And that boyfriend drama is not AT ALL what I expected. :rotfl: That silly Gordon, trying to make a move on your mom. We have noticed before, while watching from Sanaa, that the giraffes can be quite friendly sometimes, though - we watched one snuggle with a tree like it was his girlfriend. :rotfl:

Gordon was quite a character.

Glad I could provide an unexpected twist to the boyfriend drama. Gordon was funny. Morgan says we should stay at AKL just so we can do the Safari and Jiko again.

Wanyama Safari-Continued.
upload_2015-3-3_0-16-58.png upload_2015-3-3_0-17-52.png upload_2015-3-3_0-18-27.pngupload_2015-3-3_0-18-46.pngupload_2015-3-3_0-19-13.pngupload_2015-3-3_0-19-32.png

After being on the savannahs about 2 hours we were returned to Jiko where we were seated at a large table together. We were given our menus for the night.

This was a tasting menu. The menu changes per season and maybe even the day. Wine pairings were included. Morgan was the only one under 21 although there were a couple of others who did not get the wine. The experience was all inclusive.

Jiko –The Cooking Place

The Bread Service was the Taste of Africa-Assortment of Dips with Khobz, Poppy Seed Lavash and House-made Naan Morgan and Mom loved these. Everyone at the table enjoyed these. There were four dips. All four were fresh and tasty. Because of food allergies specifically corn and pork-I received a dinner roll to go with the dips. The dinner roll was disappointing. I make as good.

This was also served with a Sunriser. They made a nonalcoholic version for everyone. Morgan and Mom loved the Nonalcoholic versions. This was also a disappointment for me. I got water due to corn syrup in the flavoring with the drink. The Sunriser is Parrot Bay Rum and Banana liqueur blended with orange, pineapple and cranberry juices.

Each of us Received Appetizer Plate which contain Inguday Tibs in Brik, Jiko Salad and Crispy Duck Bobotie Rolls. This was very artfully presented and yummy. The Inguday Tibs in Brik were mushrooms, spinach and cheese in a crispy Tunisian Filo with Apples and curry vinaigrette. This was warm and very good. Morgan who hates spinach loved this. This was a table favorite.

The Jiko Salad had heirloom spinach, poached pears, kabocha squash and pear vinaigrette with pumpkin seed and black lentil brittle. This was a tasty salad.

The Crispy Duck Bobotie Rolls was very good with a cucumber and green mango dressing/garnish. This was very good. By the time bread and the appetizers were over, we all could have stopped

The Appetizer plate was paired with Graham Beck “the Game Reserve”, Chenin Blanc, Franschoek. I am not knowledgeable at all about wines except, I liked this okay.

There were three entrees served family style. All three were very good. The Botswana style seswaa Beef short rib. The beef short ribs were some of the best I have ever had. They were very good. Not fatty or greasy.

Next up was the Harissa Chicken and saffron broth. The chicken was good as well. Nice and tender, not at all dry.

Then was the maize crusted grouper with tomato-butter sauce. Mom said this was the best fish ever!! She ate 2 or 3 pieces of this. Now my fish was just a plain piece of grouper because of my allergy.

Morgan and I would say the Beef short ribs won out hands down. Mom would say the fish did with the beef ribs a close second.

I shouldn’t be disappointed in this meal or should I? I was disappointed in that with paying what we did, I would have rather had omissions than being served a plain piece of baked fish at a signature restaurant. Wonderful bread service but getting a dinner roll instead. Did all of those breads contain corn meal?

I understand I have food allergies and intolerances. Pork is a true allergy, corn and peanuts cause migraines. They would not serve me something that had almonds in it because of a nut allergy. Peanuts are a legume not a tree nut. I don’t have a problem with almonds or other nuts. Ask, don’t assume. My dessert was a coconut panna cotta. I really don’t like coconut and any kind of panna cotta is not my first choice. It was okay but would not have been my choice if ordered from a dessert menu. Everyone else received a Dessert trio.

The sides served were all very good. The problem-where do you put them with all the food to this point. Served as sides were Pole beans, spoon bread soufflé, Jiko Macaroni and cheese (Yummy-even though I only had a taste as it contained corn meal. Is that why everyone likes it? (The secret ingredient) Also served as sides were vegetables of the moment and Vegetable confit with Tunisian olive oil. The sides were all good. I especially liked the vegetables of the moment which were mostly root veggies and the vegetable confit.

The dessert trio served to everyone else contained Malva Pudding which was toasted meringue, lemon curd and wild strawberries. Morgan and Mom said this was very good. The next dessert was Avacado Custard Cake with a honey sage sauce and pumpkin brittle. This was the least favorite of the table. Morgan said I didn’t miss anything. The next was a Ghanaian Chocolate and Kenyan Coffee Pot de Crème tart. Morgan does not like coffee and said this won hands down in spite of the coffee flavor. This seemed to be the table favorite.

With the Entrees a Graham Beck “The Game Reserve”. Cabernet Sauvignon, Robertson was served and Mulderbosch Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc, Stellenbosch was served with dessert. I liked the first and the dessert wines best. The dessert wine was not too sweet with the panna cotta that was really sweet and coconutty which is one of the reasons I didn’t like it much.

After dinner we were each given a gift bag that contained some chocolates, African spices, and a wanyama safari pin. The bags were a very nice touch.

I really liked Jiko. I enjoyed the company and meeting new people. The animal interaction was wonderful. I thought the price per person was very reasonable considering the type of experience. The warning I would give is sticker shock could occur if you do not think about what you are getting. The cost was 190 dollars per person. This included the reception/snacks at the beginning, the safari experience which was about 2 hours for our group and then the four course dinner with wine pairings. Tips and tax were included and a portion of the cost is given for conservation purposes.

Will I do this every time I stay at AKL or Kidani? No. Would I do it again? Definitely a yes. I would say that if I ever stay at AKL or Kidani again, I would try to take part in at least one of the special offerings at this hotel such as one of the safaris, animal expert interactions/lunch at Sanna.

After dinner we rolled back to the car and to Kidani. We were in bed by 10 pm We spent about an hour looking at the pictures we had taken so far this trip.

Next up : Animal Kingdom and Epcot.

Ask, don’t assume.
I, too, have run across this attitude. All five of us have something. Molly doesn't usually fight for herself and Jeramey can't, so it's usually up to me. D@mmit will probably be the word I use the most this summer.:crazy2:

Wow, sounds like a great experience. Sorry they didn't make the meal great for you, but sure is a lot of food and drink included! Have to keep this in mind someday, if we go to WDW kid-free.

I love Disney dining...don't get me wrong. I do appreciate the caution and knowing that they are looking out for me and working to make sure cross contamination etc does not happen. My pork allergy has many more consequences than my intolerances such as hives rash, asthma attacks and even anaphalytic reaction twice. Now I have had them be very creative and even ask me. At Cinderella's Royal table they told me they were going to give me plan vanilla icecream and asked if that would be okay instead of the one item I couldn't have.

I didn't mean to give the impression that the meal wasn't great but for the money paid it was a lot of food. These reservations were made at 6 months out to the day. You knew what was coming. I didn't want a migraine but also everyone else got chocolate. I love chocolate. Where was my chocolate? If you ever get a sitter and you are staying at AKL, make the ressie early and pay the sitter!!

Okay, you may have not missed updates from me, but I sure missed them from you. WOW!

I'm loving it all. Your mom looks so adorable in Morgan's ears.

I'm with you...LOVE the Wizard of Oz (I still cry every time I watch it).

The photopass pictures are great.

LOVE all the savannah pictures...especially the giraffes.

I'm glad you enjoyed Jiko. We really enjoyed it when we went in 2013.

Okay, you may have not missed updates from me, but I sure missed them from you. WOW!
I go days without updating. The first day I am off after working 3 12's is a rest day. I may do a load of laundry and put dinner in a crock pot but that is about all!! While my feet were up...I finished and uploaded the next update. Maybe another over the weekend. I am off Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday I won't have time. I am taking Mom to a MD appointment and my aunt is going with us, and we are having lunch and I am taking the ladies shopping at Fresh Market and Sam's/

I'm loving it all. Your mom looks so adorable in Morgan's ears.
Mom had fun with Morgan's ears and Morgan lets her get by with it. Morgan is very good with Mom like Mom was with her when she was younger.

I'm with you...LOVE the Wizard of Oz (I still cry every time I watch it).Morgan took her Wizard of Oz music/jewelry box with her to school I think. Don't watch it with her unless you want her to say all the lines with the characters.

The photopass pictures are great.
Thanks. We had some really great photographers.

LOVE all the savannah pictures...especially the giraffes.
It was fun taking them. The only picture I wish I had but didn't see it about to happen was Mom's 'almost' kiss from Gordon.
Kathy, thanks for reading and thanks to all of you who are reading. It Is great fun getting to know you all. Maybe some of you will be going next time go. I am considering a Food and Wine trip in the Fall. Not sure yet.

I'm glad you enjoyed Jiko. We really enjoyed it when we went in 2013.
If you like Jiko , backstage tours and are staying at Kidani or Jambo House , I would really suggest this. What you get is well worth it!!

Tuesday was a beautiful morning as we all rose early enough to make an early opening rope drop. Did I really say that? Did we really do that? Yes we did.
Hey! Good for you!!!

I should remember by now to ask for front row and be patient and wait on it. The feet were horrible. It is so distracting to see the feet above you. Smelling trees and citrus and seeing feet.UGH!!
Better than seeing the trees and citrus and smelling the feet.

After riding Nemo we walked over to Mission Space for our second fp of the day. Morgan did team orange and Mom and I did team green. This was a first for all of us. I might would try orange with Morgan if I am having a great day
Your mom rode MS after Soarin? Wow!

Hmmm... common sense doesn't always prevail. Hope the wheel chair has good brakes! :scared1:

Glad you liked it. It was a great activity but was really from 3:30 pm until almost 9pm I had read about it in only a couple of reports. It is also limited by you must be staying at Kidani or Jambo House to be able to do it. The other thing that limits it is the cost. Yes we drank free Disney water and did without eating out at home to do it but it was so well worth the time and money. It was also a lot of fun in that we actually interacted with cast members and learned their stories. From persons from Africa to the chef to the hostess and our waiter. Our waiter at dinner was helping others waiters around us and but it didn't appear that his responsibility was anything other than us. We were able to interact with the chef at dinner as well which was very nice.
Our group also seemed to work well together. The college students and young adults got along well and the girls all had similar interests. The girlfriend and I had very similar experiences and even same Master's degrees ( mine it not nursing!!) The conversations never seemed to lag ...You always wonder what it will be like on tours or at dinner when on cruises.
I really think you would love it say on your next trip...let Grandma and Grandpa do something with the kids while Mom and Dad run away. :cool1::cool1:Just don't tell Mom and Dad you are plunking down 380 dollars or more on dinner and leaving them out...or maybe stay 2 night at AKL and give MOM and Dad dinner for Birthday, Christmas, Mothers Day Father's Day etc.

Sounds like quite a meal...sorry there were some not so good parts...for that price. The atmosphere is so nice there though.

Wednesday January 7, Hump Day-Only Two Days Left

Animal Kingdom Extra Magic Morning, Shopping at DTD and Epcot Evening

We were up by 6:30 am with a mission. Now I must admit this was a day I was a slacker. I made everyone get up and get showered before I got up. I was tired and my hips and legs were hurting so I got up last.

Out the door in the car to Animal Kingdom. One the way, this is what we saw each day as we left to go anywhere. Except today this is what we saw from our parking spot in the handicapped lot.

This morning we were on a mission. Morgan and I were on a Mission.

No Not food or ice cream, but I do love this truck.[URL=http://s343.photobucket.com/user/APrice6768/media/IMG_20150107_085206_279_zpszi48uhnt.jpg.html][/URL

We walked further and left Mom to watch.

Yep!! We almost ran to Expedition Everest. There are wall everywhere. I also remember the apes weren’t out yet. We saw there keeper working to get them to come out. After Everest, we went to Tough to Be a Bug and explored around the Tree of Life.

We headed to Africa for the 10am showing of Lion King. We hadn’t had breakfast so we grabbed some fruit and Elephant ears at a cart and headed to find a bench to eat our goodies at. We encountered a problem, they were filling the auditorium so we covered our goodies and went in. I love the new location and we were at the front of the lion section.
