DVC options...

M not a DCV member and I really wanted to stay at AKL with a savannah view but I don't think price wise it's in the cards for our family. I was looking into DVC, and although I can't afford to buy into it or think were gonna be going back enough to get use out of it. I was wondering if ppl could point me in the direction of renting points. I've seen ppl saying they are renting points and it's cheaper and stuff and I was wondering the best websites to look at. Trusted sources to buy from etc.

Any help would be appreciated!

Renting points.. We used a point broker...DVCrentals....go to their web site.. Pop in your dates and a point calculator comes up to tell you how many points are needed for your choice... Times that number by 14.00 a point and that total is the cost... Everything !!

There also is David's but he's based out if Canada and using Discover card out of USA like a 40.00 fee... and he won't check availability unless you send one night deposit..

We used DVCrentals in May... studio at BLT....Lindsay Wheatley was our rep...great transaction, couldn't have been any easier... But you got to book as soon as you can... These rentals go like fire..!

Before we bought our DVC points we used Dave's DVC Rentals and also The Timeshare Store. Dave was $14/pt and TTS is $12/pt. We were very pleased with both.

Both Davids DVC Rental and the Timeshare store are highly recommended and honest. You won't have to worry about anyone ripping your off or messing up your ressie if you stick with them.

You'll find fellow dissers here who are willing to rent points for your stay. Often they'll be cheaper than the point brokers.

1) you are not actually "renting pts", you are renting a reservation that a DVC owner makes with their pts. that means they control the reservation until you check in and if you need to make any changes, they will have to contact member services for you as member services will not speak to non-members.

2) reservations are generally non-refundable. that's a biggie.

3) DVC studios come with 1 queen bed and 1 pullout sofabed (except for OKW). you also don't get daily housekeeping.

so while renting is a good deal, make sure you understand the trade-offs first...

Thank you for the clarification! I appreciate it, I'm gonna look into it and see if it's workable for our next trip. I'm not too sure about the idea of someone else controlling the reservations, and the non refundable part also scares me off a but but well have to take a look at it! Again thanx!!

We were leery at first... Cancelation policy non existent but before this rental, we've done 50 trips to WDW, and never cancelled once or changed dates....

We also understood about no room housekeeping... we're both mid 60's, don't make messes and can fix our own beds, so again... no biggie... Those 2 trade offs for a cheap price at a DVC villa made sense to us and let me tell you, BLT, though austere and lacking a real theme is still the best villa for the short walk to the MK...

Don't you have to book 10 to 11 months out to get the studios or cheaper ones like animal kingdom and pay upfront? I don't mind booking far out but we usually go with my sister and her family and they can't alaways pay a yr in advance

We were leery at first... Cancelation policy non existent but before this rental, we've done 50 trips to WDW, and never cancelled once or changed dates.... We also understood about no room housekeeping... we're both mid 60's, don't make messes and can fix our own beds, so again... no biggie... See the house keeping issue isn't an issue for us. Its me, my SO, and my will be almost 10 year old son . And we cleaned up after our selves before leaving for the parks each morning last time we were their. And as my son says, I have a clear ur room stare. All I have to do is walk in and give him a look and he makes sure his floor is tidy! We've never cancelled or changed our dates either but with my luck this would be the time we would have to. Last time it was just my son and I, this time were going with my SO, and he's got a young daughter who isn't allowed to come (the mother won't let her until she takes her the first time, and not until she's 5, which she just turned) and last time he was supposed to come but his ex wouldn't guarentee him the time away from his daughter for 2 weekends so I'm leery she might pull a stunt like this again and we'd have to cancel.

Nope. Many times, an owner will have a reservation that they find they can't uses, sometimes at the last moment. Then, a 'renter' can swoop in and get it. That's what's really good about using a broker. I had an early Dec stay at BWV booked. But, in August realized that I wasn't going to go. So, I offered the reservation to David's...it was grabbed in a day!!!

Not always- we just booked a dvc rental at beach club for January 31- February 8 at beach club for a studio- all the studio room options were available at boardwalk and beach club about 200 days out- so there's always hope and it never hurts to check!

Animal Kingdom is a very large resort so will usually have availability when the smaller and more popular resorts are booked, except for value villas and concierge villas...those go very, very quickly.

If you use a broker such as any of the ones listed in previous posts, the part about having someone else control your reservation shouldn't be a concern. It's no different than if you booked a regular package through a travel agent. The point brokers are reputable and likely have a bit of a vetting process with their sellers, so to my knowledge, there hasn't been any fraud issues or anything like that.

You do have to pay up front and you should book early in order to get the best shot at the room type you want at the resort you want during the dates you want. DVC rooms, especially cerain views/room types, are far less plentiful than regular hotel rooms so early booking is key. Also something to keep in mind is that DVC busy times don't always jive with park busy times. For instance, DVC's busiest week is early December, but the parks are generally empty during this time. Don't put off booking your DVC points because you think you're going at a slow time.

Since you should book early for best options, the non-cancelation policy of renting points is a big turn off for a lot of people. To my knowledge, it can even be a challenge to change dates or resorts since it may require more/less points which the owner may or may not have.

Agreed. Private owners can make whatever payment terms they want. Sometimes that is to the point renter's benefit.

We have been renting from private owners on this board for years and have never had a problem. Ten years ago not many people knew about renting points and it was relatively easy to get a reservation. Now when someone posts available points it seems that they get hundreds of requests!
Luckily, we have found an owner who rents to us on a regular basis, so we don't have to worry about paying for the rental and then having a stranger take our money and canceling on us. I do think that most everyone on the boards is trustworthy, and you can link the reservation number on mde so you can always keep track of it.
The money you will save is well worth all the negative in my opinion. Also, the timeshare store often rents for $8 a point if it is a last minute reservation. The main issue with that it you usually end up only having a choice of Saratoga Springs.

If I may piggy back for a moment, After reading this I went to the timeshare store online. Am I missing the online form? Or do they just take phone calls instead? The $12/point thing is pretty swaying. Thanks for the tip!

I used to get emails from the timeshare store after I put in an inquiry about purchasing a dvc resale. On these emails it would include what points they had for rent after all the sale listings. I no longer get the emails, but I'm sure you could call or email them. I don't think they show the rentals on the website.
