One home resort, 2 use years?

Hey everybody. I have a smallish contract at ssr and want to add on resale. Not many good contracts lately with the same use year. How annoying is it to own 2 different use yrs? I see so many contracts I want to make an offer on but it's not my use year?.. I know I can do a one time transfer between the accounts. I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to miss out on a good deal at the same time. But I also know if I can hold out for my use year it would be easy to make reservations. What's your experience with this?.. Grab a great deal with a different use year or hold out for the use year I have.?

I would like to know as well. I would like to add a 2nd home resort but I don't find many small June use years

Problem with two, UY is that Disney regards it functionally as two separate members. Sure, you can transfer between the accounts once a year. But for a small add-on it's really inconvenient.

Where I think this would work best is with two medium sized contracts, where each contract could separately book a desired reservation every other year, and both could be combined via transfer "once in a blue moon."

But adding a 25-50 point contract? Personally I would only do that in my current UY.

It can be done but there is extra work involved and twice the number of dates to keep track of. If you don't have any other choice, give it a try, you can always sell a contract later and adjust your holdings.

Is your current UY and home resort the ones you want or should you sell and start over?

We have a small add in another UY, we got it for a very good price so I went ahead. I don't find it that hard to manage I do have to think about how I'm going to use it but frankly before booking I'm thinking bout what I'm going to book for ages. I use it once every three years and we prefer split stays. I tend to transfer into my small contract not out so with banking and borrowing I can book an entire 4 night section of our split stay ( our split stays tend to be 4 nights near EPCOT, 4 night AKV, 4 nights BLT then off to universal for 4 nights).

Although I don't find it too much if a pain, when we have points overload in about ten years time as the kids stop travelling with us and we are free to go in September it will be the contract I sell.

I have two contracts with different UYs at OKW. I just created a speardsheet and keep detailed records of which points/reservations are coming from which contract. I treat it like I have two separate memberships, the main reason for that is my latest one has both my adult DDs on the title name, and we use it for family trips.

I have two and simply treat them as their own membership when booking. It can be tricky and I have had to borrow points in one membership when there were points in the other because I didn't want to deal with the transfer since it would not show up online and I'd be forced to call MS to use the points.

But, the memberships are larger--one has 250 points--100 at BLT and 150 at BWV--and the other membership has 180 BLT points. So, I have plenty to book trips in the way I need them.

Would it be easier if they were one? Sure, but having a Dec and June UY does give me some options in terms of always having trips within the first 8 months which helps if I have to cancel or change--which I just had to do with my May trip since we are now heading to Taiwan in July for my son's wedding.

Having a Dec UY with my initial June UY, has allowed us to book those May trips and not worry about it.

New here to DVC (not new to DIS)...so if I buy a small resale, and then later when Poly points are released I buy a small contract from there (if they allow members to buy a smaller min. contract), I have 2 separate memberships -and cannot combine points from 2 different contracts to book 1 vacation?

If I'm understanding correctly though I could transfer IN someone else's points, unlimited times, but can only transfer OUT my points once per use year?

If you buy a resale and then buy Poly from DVD, DVD will sell you the same use year you already have from the resale. The points could be mixed for one reservation at 7 months out but not at 11 (only points applicable to a resort can be used for that resort at 11 months out). Currently, if you are already a member, either by resale or from DVD, you can purchase 25 or more add-on points from DVD at any resort. I doubt that 25 minimum will change with Poly (DVD tried to raise the minimum add-on once to 100 with BLT and it was such a disaster that it reverted back to the 25 point minimum within three months)

You cannot transfer in someone else's points multiple times. You are entitled to one transfer, either in or out but not both, per use year.

You cannot combine contracts to book any one night and thus your two options when using both for the same trip is to either transfer points from one use year to the other or reserve some nights using one use year and the remaining mights using the other and link the reservations through MS (we do that often). You have two different banking dates and you get two different dues bills, two annual sattements that provide the deductible property taxes, and if you have automatic monthly withdrawal of dues you get two different monthly withdrawals. Both contracts will appear in your one on-site account at the offical member site.

THANK YOU! This was exactly the info I was looking for. I misunderstood the transfer policy, thank you for clarifying that for me. As far as renting points (which I've done many times as a non-DVC member) - are there any restrictions on that once I become a DVC member? Or can I continue to rent unlimited if I need extra points (and link the ressies together thru MS as you stated above, if using some of my points, and renting someone else's)?

Renting points is kind of a misnomer because what members are actually doing is renting a reservation not points. The member uses his own points to make reservation in the renter's name. The member retains control of both the reservation and the points used for it subject only to his contractual agreement with the renter.

That kind of rental can be done numerous times in any use year. Moreover you can do those using two different use years and then linking the reservations, but be aware of one rule DVD created in its attempt to prevent professional renters (those who buy points just to rent them): if you do more than 20 rentals in any given 12 month period, it will be presumed that you are violating the rule that prohibits you from using your membership for "commercial purposes," and you won't be able to do more rentals absent establishing that all your reservations in that 12 month period were for personal use and not commercial purposes.

We have 3 different Use Years and 2 different resorts and, at one time, had 4 different Use Years. We have had no problem managing the points and, so far, have never had a point expire in 21 years.

With the advent of the member site, managing points is even easier than it used to be. We have transferred points between accounts and MS has allowed this without counting as our one transfer per year - although that is contrary to the written policy and could easily be different depending on the MS rep.

If you find a resale contract that meets your needs at a reasonable cost, I would not let having a 2nd (or 3rd) Use Year be a concern. In our case, it actually helped since we found that we enjoy traveling at various times of the years and the multiple Use Years offer even more flexibility. We have memberships with February, March and June Use Years and also had a September at one time.

If you make one reservation for part of a trip with one use year and then make another reservation for the same room category for the rest of trip using the second use year, they are two separate reservations. If you don't link them through MS, they will be treated as two different reservations and you will have the risk that you have to move rooms on the turnover date. Once linked through MS, they are treated as one reservation at the resort and you keep the same room. If your question goes to the dining plan and whether you can buy it for just one of the reservations, I do not know the answer since I have not purchased the dining plan.

You will find posters who will say that they don't have a problem with multiple UY's and you will find some that have had problems and even sold contracts to go back to one UY.

Buyers need to weigh the facts, decide on plan that works for them and live with their decision.

Doesn't seem that bad until MS messes up your reservation because of a transfer or you make a mistake trying to keep everything straight. I have been there, done that and while multiple UY's may benefit some, for most members, IMO it isn't worth it.
