PHM 2015-In Pursuit of Cupcakes While Running in Glass Slippers

Decisions, Decisions....Upcoming 5K

I am looking at my 5K app and figuring that I will finish the workout schedule around the first week of April, so that means I need to find a 5K race to run. I think I have said before that I am very self conscious when it comes to my running, I am not a fast runner and really like my run/walk intervals without the fear that others are watching me or judging me. I prefer to find races where I can blend into the crowd, but where I live it is not the that easy. Looking at the upcoming local runner’s club calendar there is not a lot of options locally. So I started branching out and looking at driving to a race. The second week in April, Ab will be in Austin for her state Latin Conference/Meet as well as her State Academic Meet (yes...she is a brilliant young lady and gets to go to state in several competitions both sports and academics) and I will be traveling down that weekend to pick her up so the 2 of us can drive to Fort Worth for her to do her first college visit at TCU. With all that in mind it would be the perfect opportunity for me to find a 5K somewhere between Fort Worth and Austin. I have narrowed it down to 2 5Ks that I think might just work.

Abilene Mayors 5K-This would be a great place to stop on Friday night to spend the night (about ½ to Austin/5 hour drive) and get up Saturday to run and then drive the rest of the way to Austin.

Brenham Blue Bell 5K-This would mean almost a 9 hour drive afterschool on Friday night (which has me arriving after midnight) to do this event and it is a little out of my way, but those of us in Texas know what Blue Bell is…some of the best ice cream there is. Ice Cream aside this race really interests me because of the scenery of the race course. Spring in central Texas means Blue Bonnets and other wildflowers…I can imagine myself right now on that course. I could stop in Waco or Temple for the night (6 hours away) and then get up really early to drive the remaining way to Brenham.

Decisions, Decisions!

First off, congratulations to Ab on her upcoming state meets! And TCU is a gorgeous campus, I am sure she will fall in love with it! Have fun on the college visit :)

Abilene is a fairly easy drive, BUT, the race in Brenham...the name of it alone would have me there, lol! I love Blue Bell ice cream! And blue bonnets & wildflowers in Spring sound wonderful. That is a LONG drive though.

You said you were doing couch to 10K next, correct? Not sure when that has you finishing up with that program, but perhaps we can find a 10K or a half before Vegas to do together. After all, I am just a 3hr drive from you ;)

Please don't be self conscious about racing. What I am finding in the races I am doing, is that more and more people do intervals...or just walk the whole thing. No matter what, you are lapping everyone who is at home sitting on the couch. I am not a fast runner and I think it is important to just go out there and have a good time. :goodvibes

The mud runs I did are Dirty 30 races. The first one I did in August I enjoyed. The obstacles were challenging, but there was a lot of teamwork between strangers. The Zombie mud run in October I did a shift as a Zombie where I pulled flags off runners (think flag football) as they came by. The fun part was dressing as a Zombie & having a professional Zombie makeover. The bad part about that race, I jammed a finger in my left hand and completely messed up my ring finger on my right hand by tearing a tendon or ligament as I was trying to capture a runners flag. After my Zombie shift I ran the race also. I was in so much pain & I was worried about injuring my leg or ankle because the mud at this course was DEEP! I had a half marathon about a month later. Needless to say I didn't have as much fun with that mud run & am pretty confident I am hanging up the mud run shoes for a while. I saw lots of severe injuries over those 2 races.

I do hope Harper can join us. I'm *pretty sure* she will be, but cant give a 100% certainty on her just yet. Not sure what she would do while I was doing the half marathon.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone as well!

I never even thought about that! I will have to ask about the courses. I think the mud run in NYC is probably better than the zombie run in a farm land! But I will look into that first now!

And I know we don't know each other but people will be around probably willing to help with Harper maybe my husband and who ever isn't running can help with kids! He will have my son and daughter... Just a thought!

Subbed and all caught up!

I'm really hoping I'm able to do the glass slipper challenge next year, it almost sounds like we'd have the same speed and could end up in the same corral! <3 How awesome would that be? :cool1:

I'm so jealous of your dedication. I've done a 1.33 mile run since getting home from Disney (on the 26th), am now getting over a cold and have exactly 0 motivation to get out and run this week. Could have something to do with the temp, though...On Friday it's supposed to be near 35, I'm gonna have to take advantage of that!

I'd go for the Blue Bell one. Ice cream and pretty scenery sounds the best to me!

I'm still a bit self conscious about running too. When I was training I ran downtown and would go past windows, look over at my reflection and then avoid that route the next time. I love watching my shadow when I run, though...is that weird? :rotfl:

Congratulations to Ab and her proud Mom!

Hi Betsy - I followed Tammi over to this thread after reading her posts on a trip report that I am working on. I was intrigued by her moniker :) and now I read your data and I think we just might be neighbors!

Nothing like the North Shore! So true about Elsa - it is snowing out AGAIN this morning but is actually the pretty, floaty type of snow that should not add up PLUS I don't have to drive into work today, so it is all good.

So glad you followed me over! We are glad to have you and thank you about Ab...pretty proud of her!

Intrigued by my moniker...hmmmm:scratchin PTR title or my DISname?

How cool that you and Betsy might be neighbors!

Thanks...she studies hard so she is very deserving...she has visited TCU when she was in 8th grade and you are right it is beautiful it will be nice to see it now in the eyes of a possibility. TCU is really her 2nd choice...her first is Creighton (good Catholic U...) then 3rd is Incarnate Word in San Antonio...and 4th is UT. Of course my dd is the one who goes for private...UGH!

Abilene is a fairly easy drive, BUT, the race in Brenham...the name of it alone would have me there, lol! I love Blue Bell ice cream! And blue bonnets & wildflowers in Spring sound wonderful. That is a LONG drive though.

Did I mention that after the 5K it is all the Blue Bell you can eat...:rotfl2:

But of course it is Lent and I have given up all carbs and sweets...UGH! And then I could drive to Georgetown and get...

one of their "cuptails" cocktail flavored cupcakes, at this swanky cuptail lounge you can order a Cosmopolitan, Margarita or Strawberry Daquiri cupcake!

HMMMM...I am really thinking this might be the race...I looked up the results from last year and in my age division there was over 200 ladies...and the time I am shooting for would put me in the top 1/2! I can blend into the crowd!:cheer2: I just need Jeff now to decide if he is going with me...Ab wants to go Prom dress....:scared: shopping in Dallas after I pick her up in Austin Sunday morning...OH JOY...that would be even worse with Jeff...its bad enough shopping with her!

I need to start looking for 10Ks in the area the end of June. Still thinking of that Hot Pepper one in Dallas. Its on my birthday, so that would be fun! Or if you can find one the end of June or before July 21!

As for blending in the crowd...no one in Amarillo seems to really run for fun...all the races are full of the same people and they don't do Galloway! And the few times I have done 5Ks I am the one they are waiting on to put the equipment up....:sad2:

Decisions, Decisions!

Oh that would be a hard one for me! I love ice cream, but I am a cranky crab without much sleep!

CARBS AND CUPCAKES?!?!

I just fainted. :faint:

WELCOME!!!!

Subbed and all caught up!

I'm really hoping I'm able to do the glass slipper challenge next year, it almost sounds like we'd have the same speed and could end up in the same corral! <3 How awesome would that be? :cool1:

That would be so cool...I am really hoping that all of us are about the same pace. I did the ToT alone and it was sad...some people frown on crossing the finish line holding hands...but those people are the more elite ones that forget about the cupcake side of Disney Races, plus they will be way far in front of me...probably will have showered and ate breakfast by the time I am done...so I am not stopping them from getting their time! Don't really plan on holding hands, but it would be great to cross together and have that group hug!

After ToT I did not really run anything until last week...but I really don't want to wait much longer...I learned the lesson of giving myself plenty of time for the unexpected!

I'd go for the Blue Bell one. Ice cream and pretty scenery sounds the best to me!

I think I am leaning that way too...even considering taking a 1/2 day off so I am not driving at night!

I'm still a bit self conscious about running too. When I was training I ran downtown and would go past windows, look over at my reflection and then avoid that route the next time. I love watching my shadow when I run, though...is that weird? :rotfl:

So not weird at all...I can only imagine what I really look like! Ugh...this sums up the thought perfectly....

I am so enjoying your banter on Nicole's PTR & TR...and your TR! I need to go back and read your PTR...I love the title!:thumbsup2

CARBS AND CUPCAKES?!?!

I just fainted. :faint:

I KNOW....but it is time to get serious and get this weight off...since January 4 I am down almost 15 pounds...5 more pounds and I can get my next sparkle skirt! :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes Now because of this 5K I am rethinking Lent...ugh

That is excellent. I lost about 10 pounds up till Valentine's Day..then fell off the wagon and started eating like crap again! Sigh. I have such a problem... girl scout cookie season DOES NOT HELP!

I have been doing this online book study through Proverbs31 with the book Made to Crave and it has been such a big help!

Girl Scout cookies are banned to the frig in husbands shop...not in the house!

I was amazed at all the injuries during those mud runs, so while they are fun, please, please be careful. I wouldn't change a thing having done them both (ok, well I could do without the finger injury!), but I have problems with my IT Band and now it just feels risky to me doing the mud runs.

That would be great if Harper could hang out with some of the other kids who wont be running the half. She loves being around other kids too and is great with younger kids especially.

Looking forward to getting to know you over the next year.

Sounds like Ab has some great choices picked out for colleges!!

I think the Blue Bell race is perfect. You had me at all you can eat Blue Bell! Maybe I should go...it's not that far of a drive ;) What time goal do you have in mind for the 5K?

Prom dress shopping? Oh goodness, I am not looking forward to that day. And Bo would go nuts shopping with Harper & I :scared:

We already talked about 10K's on FB earlier, but I am down for whatever. Surely we can find something in the coming months when race calendars are updated more. That is the tough thing about living in the south, not a lot of race choices during those hot, hot summer months. We will find something :thumbsup2

I still find myself checking prior race results before I commit to races also. Last year I didn't register for several races because I knew my finishing time would be near the end. I have a long way to go to reach my ultimate goal of a 2:15 half marathon time.

Feeling like the Disney Queen I am...not a like a princess whose needs a good dose of reality! I am strong...the cold never bothered me anyway!

That's awesome, I lost a lot of weight while pregnant and it's slowly coming back!

I am sure he wouldn't mind! My son would love it! Looking forward to getting to know you too!

Just checking in Tammie to let you know I'm following along, in the depth of tax season. If you get to Austin, you'll have to let me know. We need to meet for something - coffee, lunch, drinks?

I would consider the Brenham thing but it's 2+hours from here and if it's an 8am race..well....I am no morning person.

You ladies are sure inspirational to me. Girls who have never been runners and are now running multiple distance races over a year - I bow to you!
