Does anyone else think this is a little creepy?

Don't like it. I know it happens in many facets of my daily transactions but this is really in your face.

I do believe this sort of technology can be very useful. In the wrong hands, however, it can be controlling. I don't expect to see negative repercussions in my lifetime but I wonder if people in the future will look back at this time and see us as enormously naive and overly trusting.

3) The device has been tested and approved by the FCC.

4) I have yet to hear one person explain how any of this "information" could be used against you. Give me an example.

We are trying to setup call recording for our operators and could only do so if they didn't deal with taking credit card numbers.

A lot of people casually mention in posts their city, job, things that make them very easy to track down. Or they link their e-mail address. Or they use the same username in multiple online forums, linking back to personal websites, photos, etc... I've been guilty of that myself, and I know better!

It's incredibly easy to stalk people online, especially people who like to chatter on forums.

However, it's also incredibly unlikely that anyone would use that information to rob their homes while they're away.

About as unlikely as someone dissecting your Magic Band and successfully extracting your credit card information.

On another my husband doesn't want to go to WDW because he doesn't want to be tracked by 'the man' by his fingerprint thread someone pointed out that with the internet you can find lots of info about people. The OP commented that while she was all over the place you would never find a shred info about him.

Well 15 minutes later just by using her unique username, her post history here, just a few websites and some junior detective work I not only found him but had a picture of him. Oh and I'm a good guy.

UGH! How many times does it have to be said, there is no personal information stored on a MagicBand. The only thing on there is a unique ID number for each MagicBand, which is printed on the back. When you scan your MagicBand at Disney calls up info, like your fastpass+ reservation, from their database. This database has several layers of security and encryption.

Even if someone stole your MagicBand they couldn't make a purchase. They still need your pin. If somehow they guessed your pin, it's only a room charge. You can review and dispute your charges at the resort. The band cannot directly charge your credit card, EVER.

However, if it did get stolen. Now you have a photo of them on a ride.

You're right, if people aren't smart about what they post online, they probably are easily tracked.

Just curious... what exactly are you afraid will happen if you don't use the card with the RFID blocking wallet?

"Creepy" is a legitimate feeling, insofar as all our feelings are legitimate feelings. And sometimes we make our decisions based on philosophy, "slippery slope", and "it's the principle of the thing", and that's legitimate, too.

But I'd love to know if there are any concrete fears, upon which the feeling is founded.

Just so you know the cards only have the low range RFID on it. It least for the magic bands you have to make complete full contact to get a read. Its not like my security door fob that only needs to be within a 1/2 an inch of the reader.

What do I think will happen if I don't use the card with the RFID blocking wallet? Probably nothing, it's a personal choice. In this case, at least, I can preserve my privacy a little bit. It shocks me that people just roll over on these issues. Maybe it's because I'm a child of the times of my youth- the 1960's and 70's when people thought the philosophies in 1984 were bad. It was hard to imagine things like this would happen yet today Big Brother is routine and people think you're a kook if you're upset about it.

Not really, if they can read it when you are on a ride to identify your picture. I guess the reader is in the car.

When I first read this post and found my pictures I was truly shocked, especially seeing the date and time shown. I don't care if someone can track down my picture, it just surprised me that it could be done. I knew on Buzz that you could swipe your card or band next to your picture at the end of your ride and it would go to your photopass, I just didn't know that they could track you and automatically put it on your photopass. My first thought was what if you were there with someone you shouldn't be (not in my case)! ;-)

In the park, if you use FP or FP+, disney will know where you are. If you stay onsite, use your band to make a purchase, you're tracked. Credit card ? iPhone ?
And what about the internet ? Newsletter ? email clubs ? social media/networks ? Even here on DIS we give out too many information about ourselves (and if we do a trip report, it's even worse)

Now, if I can use this technology so that the waiter finds me at BOG and brings my food before it's cold. If Disney can bring me my ride pictures without me needing to wait in line for 10 minutes at the photo shop each time I ride.
well ... I'm willing to accept that. Because it does not infringe on my privacy.

Talking about privacy here is like going to a restaurant and playing hide and seek with the waiter just because we don't want that waiter to know your table number, just because we consider that where we are is "private".

Yes there's a lot worse privacy infringements that are happening right now that we don't even know about. This is helping Disney make a sale but its also a convenient service for some people.
