OK I know that is Dickens not Disney but it fits this trip!

First let me give you the cast of characters.

There is DH Jim - he answers to that, Dad, Poppy, hey you and a few other things. He is a deputy sheriff for the City of Philadelphia and before that he was a Correctional Officer. He has reached the 30 year mark and can retire any time now.

Jim is not a huge Disney fan but this trip was his idea. The last 2 trips he went on were in August and he HATES the heat.

His favorite character is Donald Duck and he does a pretty decent impression.

His favorite park is wherever we are that day.

His favorite ride - he loves thrill rides but skips them because of me. I usually go on a couple to make him happy.

Then there is me - the author of the TR and major Disney fanatic. I am Lorrie although I answer to that, Sis (my brothers), Mom, Grandmom and until recently MeMo. Sadly my Mikey can speak much better and he no longer calls me MeMo. :sad1:

My favorite park - I don't have one. I like them all for different reasons.

My favorite ride - MK easy It's A Small World. I know, I hear the groans but it is a sentimental favorite. I rode it at the 1964 World's Fair in New York. Sadly it was closed this trip.

In EPCOT it's - Journey into the Imagination - again for sentimental reasons. My son has always loved this ride and when I am on it I see the biggest smile on his little face. He is 31 so not so little now.

In DHS - Star Tours - although I have grown to love Tower of Terror.

Animal Kingdom - Kilimanjaro Safari. I love animals and taking pictures and it is the perfect ride for both.

My favorite character is Grumpy. He is just misunderstood!

OK as I said this trip was Jim's idea. The last two trips he went on were in August with our daughters and their families. He loved going to see the grandkids faces as they experienced Disney for the first time but he HATES the heat. The week before we left we had a wind chill of 11 degrees and he went to work without a coat on. He tries to act like Scrooge but he loves Christmas so we chose the week after Thanksgiving. I priced airfare and he said NO WAY!!! If we go we are driving.

He also hates to make plans preferring to just go with the flow. I think this is because I used to be so OCD about trips trying to make sure they were perfect. Instead I made everyone miserable. I finally learned to relax and Disney has changed that. He does understand the need for some planning.

Jim also prefers to stay at a moderate resort. I surprised him by renting points and staying DVC. I went to a site recommended by a friend and we booked Saratoga Springs. I made plans and changed my plans. I almost cancelled the trip. I gave no argument about renting an ECV. A serious ankle injury that will most likely require surgery made me give in.

Jim wanted to take this trip for me. I have had a really bad year and he knew that I would totally distress at Disney, at least that was the plan. Just a sample of how stressed the year has been.

1) I fell in September 2012 and what was supposed to be a minor injury has turned into anything but that. I tore ligaments, cartilage, hyperextended my tendon and have had a series of stress fractures. I was in a boot or a brace for 14 months til I said no more. It's going to require surgery after the new year and I am not looking forward to it.

2) Right after the holidays last year I got a phone call from my mom that my aunt/godmother had been rushed to the hospital and that as soon as she stabilized she was being sent to Philadelphia from the Jersey shore, a 2+ hour ride by ambulance. It turned out that she had a serious heart condition that caused her to have a series of mini strokes. While she was in the hospital and then rehab here her housekeeper conned her into changing her will and signing everything over to her. Personally I think while she had free access to my aunt's house she snooped and found out what was in the will. I wanted her in jail but got out voted by my parents. We put the housekeeper on notice. Her response - to drive to Philly in my aunt's car and take her to a rehab down the shore. I was angry at the rehab center and the housekeeper but my aunt was where she wanted to be.

Fast forward a few months and we were told my aunt had very little time left. In late October my great uncle died. As I was looking up the funeral details for my uncle I started sobbing. My aunt had died over a month earlier and the housekeeper never called us. We had called my aunt but always got the machine so had no clue. The housekeeper also had my aunts will changed again right before she died leaving EVERYTHING to her. I still get really angry about it and really wanted to contest it but have decided to let it go. I know it's not what my aunt wanted but they are things. I am angry that I never got to say good bye. I do believe in karma and the housekeeper and her husband will pay one day.

3) My oldest granddaughter got very sick and was in the hospital and missed 3 weeks of school. She is doing better but will have to deal with what was wrong for the rest of her life. I would love to take the condition from her so she never has to deal with the pain. Unfortunately I can't and it hurts me that she has to suffer. It's not serious although it can become serious if not controlled.

4) In the space of one week my computer died, the transmission went in my car then the brakes. Spaced out a little it would have been a little easier to take.

Good and Bad - My youngest daughter found out she was expecting but she has an auto immune disorder so she is high risk. My SIL found out she was expecting identical twins then she miscarried one. At least she still had the surviving twin. And my cousin found out the at the age of 45 he and his wife were going to have the baby they never thought they would have. The baby has Down Syndrome so a little worrisome as she has a common heat defect that will need surgery when she is born. Still a blessing though.

It has been a terribly stressful year and my wonderful DH knew that Disney would be the perfect place to distress. At least that is the plan.

I took over 3000 pics so as soon as I can get them organized and loaded we will start my adventure. And yes the title sounds like my year but I promise you it explains the trip. So pull up a chair, grab a drink and join in. Fasten your seatbelts it's going to be a bumpy ride. And say hi! I don't bite, hard anyway and I would love the company.

Oh my goodness! It sounds like you had quite a stressful year. Looking forward to your pictures. And I'm with you on the classic attractions. It's not a trip to Disney for me without the PeopleMover. And I love Carousel of Progress because it's one that Walt actually had a hand in.

:welcome:

It has been a stressful year and I am looking forward to a new and better year. I do love Carousel of Progress too. I also rode that at the World's Fair. Some things should never be changed. Maybe tweaked a little but not changed.

Cute pics!

:welcome: Thanks the will be many more to come.

I'm following also!

With the year you had - no wonder your husband thought a trip to Disney was in order. Good man!!:thumbsup2

Thanks for joining in Susan. I actually took more like 3400-3500 pics but weeded out he really bad ones. I played around with the camera settings a lot.

I am hoping to delay the surgery for a bit. I really am afraid of being in a cast and the recuperation afterwards. Plus I have the new baby coming in January and a new trip in May if all goes as planned. Can't find a good time to be laid up.

I am hoping on sorting out the pics today as we are getting hammered with snow. Last I heard it was going to be 6 inches. :scared1: I want to go back to Disney.

I had a friend that delayed it and she regretted it. More damage and scar tissue builds up the longer you delay. I would just get it done with if I were you. I completely understand that it isn't anything to look forward to. I absolutely DREAD the fact that I have to have another surgery. It is horrible.

Day 1, November 30th - We hit the road.

We were up early to get on our way but not to the airport. Did I mention that my husband is insane? He likes to drive!!!! It is not a short drive. From our house to Orlando is around 1050 miles and around 17 hours. We also do not stop except for nature breaks - food and the bathroom and I pack food for the way down. I did mention that my husband is insane didn't I?

I planned on being on the road at 4 AM. Jim had gone to bed early after Black Thursday AND Friday shopping with our daughters. I planned on 4 AM it was closer to 4:30 by the time we said good bye to the fur babies.

Jack

Barbossa

and Simba

Jack and Barbossa are cats we rescued last year from our daughters backyard as babies. Simba is 13 and not doing well. He really misses our dog Nikki who we had to put down on August 31st of this year. It was weird going on a trip and not saying good bye to her. She always knew suitcases meant we were leaving. Our son was coming over to the house every day to check on them.

We had packed the car the night before so it was good bye and we were off to find a gas station. Thankfully the Sunoco around the corner was open and we filled up at $3.39 a gallon. It was then off to WAWA for coffee for me. At 5 AM we were finally on our way and on I 95. The temperature as we left Pennsylvania was 26 degrees.

We reached Delaware at 5:25 AM. I told Jim to take a pic of the Welcome to Delaware sign. He took a really blurry pic of the dash board. At 5:45 AM we were in Maryland and the EZ Pass I insisted on getting was great. Drove right through the toll booth. We stopped at the first rest area which I believe is the Chesapeake House. After a 5 minute stop and giving Jim the keys we were off again.

We made it to Virginia around 7:25 AM. I woke up when we were close to Fredericksburg but Jim did look at the time for me. We made a quick stop at a McDonalds for breakfast. We both had Egg McMuffins - total cost $6.10. I had orange juice in the car.

On our way again we saw this at 10:24 AM

I am a little better at moving vehicle pictures. We made a stop at the North Carolina rest stop. I loved the bench

We also stopped in NC for gas. We drove 422 miles, used @ 17 gallons of gas and the cost per gallon was $3.23. I was happy. I was getting better mileage since the transmission was replaced. Of course no ride south is complete without a few of these pics

Jim an I both said that it seemed like there weren't as many billboards this trip.

At 1:29 PM we saw

We were in South Carolina. No we didn't stop there. We stopped at the worlds biggest tourist trap 2 years ago with our oldest grandson. We figured he needed to say he had been there. We didn't need to stop again.

At 5 PM we were seeing

The sun going down on Georgia. I thought we were making really good time. Of course I was still falling asleep every now and then or reading. I had downloaded Patricia Cornwells new book onto my tablet.

I didn't attempt to get a pic at Florida. It was dark and I was getting cranky. We reached the Florida border at 6:53 PM. We stopped just south of Jacksonville for gas and food. McDonalds again. I had a Cheddar Grilled Onion Burger and Jim had a Bacon Cheeseburger, we split a fries. Grand total - $6.05. We had drinks in the car. Gas was $3.38 a gallon and we had traveled 453 miles. I was excited. We were in Florida, I was seeing palm trees. Jim told me to relax we still had a couple more hours to go. :sad1: I went back to sleep.

We found I 4 and headed to Orlando. I gave him the wrong exit. If he had listened to me we would have driven to Tampa. I didn't have my GPS and I really felt lost without it. Thankfully I did have print outs of everything and at 10 PM we were pulling into the Comfort Inn and Suites by Universal Studios.

I took a few pics of the room while Jim parkd the car and grabbed our bags.

It was a nice room. We were at the far end of the hotel but it was OK for one night. Now I am a heavy sleeper for the most part and I missed the excitement at 1 AM. Evidently someone kept knocking on the door, loudly! She wanted to be let in the room. Jim told her she had the wrong room. She kept arguing with him in Spanish. He finally got through to her that she was at the wrong room. I snored peacefully away.

With that our first day ended. It will get better from here. I will have tons of pictures. Seriously how much is to there to report on when you spend 17 hours in the car driving?

I keep saying I would like to drive down sometime. But Andy says he doesn't think we'd make it. We are talking of going for a month or more so then we would have to drive. Of course it couldn't all be at Disney.$$$$$$$$

I'm here, I'm here. I'll be back to read when I get home from work. :goodvibes

I would like to fly as it gives me more time in Disney but for some reason airfare out of Philadelphia is higher than NY, Atlantic City, Baltimore and Newark. It doesn't make sense to drive 2 hours and then pay to park so I give in. It does give me practice for Jim's retirement. He wants to travel the country by car. That should be fun.

Lorrie, you really have had a horrid year!

I knew about your ankle and your granddaughter, but didn't know about your aunt/uncle. That is just awful. You truly needed this vacation!!!

I remember when we used to drive from Chicago...took 2 days to get there...we'd stop in Tennessee and then drive the rest of the way the next day. I agree your husband is crazy!

Can't wait to read more.
