Dining plan confusion!

Thought I had this figured but just read something that has confused me slightly. Me and my bf have got the DDP for our next trip (20 days!) I understand we have 1 quick service and 1 table service credit per day along with snacks. If we didn't want a TS meal for each day of our stay, could we swap a TS credit for a QS meal? I've probably made that sound more confusing than necessary and am aware it's probably been asked a million times .. Sorry! Would really appreciate any help :)

It has been allowed in the past, but I think it will depend on each individual restaurant's policy.

That said, are you getting free dining? If not, I would seriously rethink the dining plan. Just pay out of pocket instead. It will be far less expensive.

Typically you can (they even mention it in the brochure now), but it's not a very economical use of the plan. There's a lot of math behind it, but each TS credit costs roughly $37.50, and your average QS meal will be in the $15-17 range.

However, if you're utilizing the Free Dining room discount, then the math changes and if it's what you want to do, it'll be fine (from that same money perspective.)

Also note that the credits are pooled and all are available once you check in. So, assuming 2 adults and 2 kids, the moment you finish check-in for a 5 night stay, the entire account would have 10 Adult TS, 10 Child TS, 10 Adult QS, 10 Child QS, 20 snacks, and 4 mugs available to use at anytime. This means that you don't have to do a TS each day, but can double up if you'd like.

Lastly, also note that the credits are allotted per night of stay and not per day (this is VERY commonly overlooked!)

Do you have the regular Dining or Deluxe? Deluxe is a large amount of food. If you are not using them for 2TS meals then probably you will find it cheaper to pay as you go.

As for the initial question, it has been hit or miss or us. Depends on where you are and what they are willing to do. So I would not expect to be able to do it, but I would think you could ask and see if they are willing. It really is a YMMV type thing. We have had success on our last day at our resort just using the TS for a breakfast but it was an equal switch we did not get 2 cs for 1 ts. Hope that helps a little bit.

Thanks for the help! We have got the regular dining plan which was free for us when we booked. Guess we will just see how it plays out when we get there. We have budgeted as though we were paying OOP for all meals so if they don't let us swap TS for CS we will have enough to cover ourselves. Thanks for the feedback :)

You could always double up your TS credits for a few signature meals and then pay OOP for CS meals once you run out of CS credits. The signature meals should be pretty easy to book even this late in the game since they take two credits.

Keep in mind that you don't have to use one TS credit per day, or even per meal. You would be much better off to pay OOP for that QS meal, and use the TS credit to add another meal (breakfast???) or upgrade one of your 1 credit meals to a signature meal somewhere for 2 TS credits. Since the popular ADRs are CC guaranteed now, cancellations do occur so keep checking if there is something else you'd like to try.

Another tip, you don't have to use the meals by the day, you could eat all the meals on Day #1 or spread them through the trip, the point is if you have 6 nights then you have 6 TS meals and 6 QS meals to use during your stay.

Does it say this in the 2013 brochure? I looked, but didn't see it. We have free dining and would like to use 1 TS for 1 CS. Do you have to go to guest services or something for the swap or can it be done when I'm ordering my CS?

Thanks!

It used to be in the dining plan brochure, but I also noticed that it is not in the 2013 or 2014 brochure. If it is still allowed, you would do it at the CS location at the time you are dining.

Yes, that language was removed from the 2013 brochure when it was reprinted mid-year.

It is not in the 2014 brochure.

If you want to try and use a TS credit for a CS meal, you make the request at the point of sale (the restaurant).
