California Grill comments....dress code

We just ate at the Cali Grill this past Friday. When we were checking in, there was a couple ahead of us in line. The wife was dressed in designer pre-stressed and artfully-torn jeans (the kind you pay big $$ for), fashion sandals and a nice shirt...the whole outfit screamed "fashion" and was expensive. The husband had khaki shorts and a fashionable name-brand t-shirt. As we walked up, the person at the podium was in the process of explaining to the couple that they have a dress code at the California Grill and do not allow torn clothing of any kind...and also pointing out that T-shirts were generally not acceptable. When the people complained they did not understand that there was a dress-code when making the reservation, the check-in person said they would make a call. Which they did, and then told the couple they would make an exception this time because it was early (5:30) and they were not busy just then. But they were very careful to clarify that they were making an exception "this one time".

That was the first time we have been to a Disney signature restaurant where they even bothered to mention a dress code. We have eaten many times at Flying Fish, Narcoosee's, Citrico's, Artist Point, Yachtsman's, Brown Derby and California Grill...have never seen anyone turned away except when there was no openings on a busy night. Have seen people dining at all those places, dressed in the same kind of clothes these people were wearing.

Wondering if California Grill is maybe trying to restore the dressy atmosphere to signature dining?

By the way, we were seated in the small room looking out over the lake...marvelous view, and quiet room. Service was excellent as was the food.

All of the resort signature restaurants have a dress code. While I haven't seen them enforce the recommended attire, there have been people turned away for wearing not permitted apparel which does include "torn clothing."

Dress Code
At this signature dining experience, Guests are asked to adhere to the dress code.

Men may wear khakis, slacks, jeans or dress shorts and collared shirts. Sport coats are optional.

Women may wear Capri pants, skirts, dresses, jeans or dress shorts.

Not permitted are tank tops, swimsuits, swimsuit cover-ups, hats for gentlemen, cut-offs, torn clothing and t-shirts with offensive language and/or graphics.

My boyfriend and I always wear collared shirts to the signatures. Are artfully torn jeans really considered "fashion" and acceptable wear in nicer restaurants? Especially when they're clearly on the list of dress code "no-nos" for the signatures at WDW. But you're right, in all our years of signature dining, we've never seen the dress code enforced that way...

I was just listening to a podcast where the broadcaster talked about how California Grill was going to try to enforce the dress code.

Wife beater t-shirts are only allowed at Italian restaurants in WDW.

I hope they do enforce the dress code I mean from what you said the people were dressed well but still a rule is a rule...

I really do not mind jeans or even shorts the thing that bothers me the most is tank tops!!!! I hate them ANYWHERE but especially a nice restaurant I hope they enforce the dress code

when i make reservations for the signature restaurants at disney, the cm always quotes the dress code word for word. that is very clear. maybe they did not spend enough time packing for the trip.

my teenage grandson loves narcoossee's and cali grill enough to make sure he is properly dressed when he dashes in from the park just in time to be seated.

The cm's are very clear about this when making the reservations. We always take collared shirts just for this. And though it may not happen often, we have seen people turned away at Citrico's and Blue Zoo.

On the other side, we are coming to WDW after a very fancy family event in Miami....if my husband and I go to CG in a suit and nice dress will we be OVER dressed? Sould we just do shirt/tie and more casual dress? It's our anniversary but I don't want to stand out too much

To answer your question, most folks will NOT be in a coat, tie, or dress--so to that extent you will be over-dressed. BUT--it's your anniversary so you should dress how you feel is appropriate for the occasion!!

As to the CG dress code, proper enforcement should have prevented the lady with torn clothing form going in. However, the part about T-shirts not being "generally acceptable" was not quite correct.

Only t-shirts with offensive words or graphics are "not permitted". So t-shirts ARE "generally acceptable" unless they meet that "offensive" standard.

Oh I really do hope this is a start of stricter enforcement of dress codes at Signatures. To me Sigature dining should feel like a special occasion so flip flops torn clothes etc should be banned and the ban enforced

Well--footwear isn't even mentioned in the dress code, so unless they decide to add something, you'll continue to see all sorts of footwear.

And I eat at Signature restaurants exclusively and from all I've seen over the last # of years, the dress "code" IS largely enforced--that is to say, the only part that CAN be enforced, which is the rather short list of items "not permitted" in the dining room.

DH wore khaki tan pants and an Izod type collar shirt (golf shirt type) - and I wore a nice top - 3/4 sleeves with white capri's.
It was June and warm.

Please keep the ambiance alive in CaliGrill, no cut off shirts and ragged jeans.

Policy has always been no flip flops, offensive language/graphics on tee's and no torn jeans/clothing. They don't care if your jeans cost $20 or $300. A torn pair of jeans is a torn pair of jeans.

Personally im glad theyre enforcing the dress code!

I think there was a point several years ago when flip flops and athletic shoes were mentioned, but everything about footwear was taken out when the dress code was relaxed and t-shirts were allowed.

Trust me. I read the dress code to my guests several times a day. There is nothing about foot wear in it.

California Grill requires collared shirts. It can be a short sleeved button down, or a polo style, but not the kind normally called a t-shirt (Hanes or whatnot)
