Combining and transfer questions

I own 150 points at VGF. First trip is this december. Since I could probably live at the world and be totally happy, I except addonitis to hit.

I could see adding on maybe 25-50 points at VGF, but my question is about other resorts.

I can see getting interests in VWL, BCV, and OKW.

Now if I were to go with smaller contracts, can I combine a 50 point resale contract, and one bought direct at a later date, or vice versa? (not sure that I would do this, but want to know if is is an option) I assume to buy resale to add on to one bought direct I would need the right use year.

Also, how does transferring points work? If I buy at say VWL(either resale or direct) can I transfer those points to VGF, or vice versa. Does that affect the 7/11 month aspects?

You will need the same Use Years to keep the contracts under one member number. You will only be able to book at the home resort at the 11 month window. So you could book split stays at 11 months and then at 7 months try to move the extra days to the reservation you want to keep. We're contemplating 2-3 smaller contracts at multiple resorts but to use on a rotation basis to have 11 month booking priority at each. We're going to wait a little before we start doing that though.

So then why exactly do you transfer points?

Maybe I do not understand exactly what transferring points is. If I have 100 points at say VWL. If I transfer then to me VGF account, can I use that additional 100 at the 11 month mark(at vgf)? If not, why even transfer them? (Mind you I am not saying that that is unfair or anything like that, I just do not see the point in transferring...If I have to wait until the 7 month mark to use them, i can just leave them where they are and use them at the 7 month mark without ever transferring them)

If the contracts are under one membership, there is no need to do any transferring. The points can be freely combined at the 7 month window. You can even book online.

If you have two separate memberships, you cannot combine points to reserve a single night. For example, if a night costs 10 points and you have 6 points in the VWL contract and 4 in the VGF contract, you could NOT reserve that night without transferring points from one contract to the other. To use the points, you would have to call MS. Transferred points do not show up online UNLESS the transfer is from the same use year and the same resort.

Transferred points retain their original use year and resort tag. Home resort booking priority attaches to the points, not the owner or the contract. So transferring VGF points to a VWL contract will not allow you to use all the points to book VWL at 11 months and vice versa.

at the 11 month booking window for VGF, you would have access to your VGF pts ONLY. that is it. there is no way to manipulate the system to turn non-VGF pts into VGF pts.

you need the right "currency" at the 11 month window...so pts from a VWL contract can never book VGF and vice-versa.

if you own under the same member number (and DVC historically treats resales with the same UY and titled the same as an "add-on"), then you can pool pts at 7 months out to book a single night or complete stay.

if you purchase a contract (direct or resale) with a different UY month, then it is not an "add-on" but an entirely new membership and the contracts basically work just as they would if you were 2 different owners. you would have to book 4 nights with one contract and 3 nights with the other contract (at the 7 month window) and then ask MS to link the 2 separate reservations so that you don't have to move (unless you transfer pts).

here is more info (with even more links) if you're still not getting it:

I could be wrong but that's what I've taken from reading these boards. Just like you stated, I don't really see a purpose in transferring except maybe in the case of multiple UYs/member IDs, transferring would allow their reservation to be under one member ID.

Another example of when a transfer is useful is to get the 11-month priority at a resort you do not own. For example, I do not own a BLT contract but could book BLT 11 months out if I arranged for a transfer of BLT points into my account. I could then use those points to book BLT in the 11-month window. In other words, the booking priority is tied to the points. If you want to book resort XYZ in the home resort booking window, you need enough XYZ points in your account to pay for the reservation.

Thank makes some sense, you transfer from a different owner...like a trade?

And thank you charles as well (and just to be clear, i was not looking for a way to manipulate the system, i just did not understand the transfer...its more between 2 owners/contracts)

I assumed that it would be the way it is, so I could not see the reason I would transfer points i had at one resort to myself at another resort.
